This seems pretty odd to me. How are you guys getting these impressions from the text? The whole point of that backstory interlude for Kirei was that he never chose to be that way. He very adamantly wanted NOT to be, and that point is made pretty clearly in his other interlude.

Regardless of whether you believe that people choose to become evil in real life, it is very apparent from the text that Kirei did not choose that, and resisted it with all of his power. To deny that is basically to deny the whole point of his character.

People who have evil natures but are raised religious face a very odd conundrum. Especially if they were raised in a very staunchly Catholic (oppressively so) setting. This propensity for evil causes nothing but suffering for the individual. His only means of relief would be schadenfreude, something I can easily meet by writing mysteries.

I'm a little late to the discussion but this post brings up an interesting point I hadn't thought of before.

Remember in EP5 Battler uncovered the truth. This means he also uncovered the whole Beatrice = Yasu thing. I suspect that the moment he figured out Beatrice wasn't this great witch he thought she was, THAT is when she died, and thus Battler did technically kill her. And that is why he couldn't revive her again. Battler has this mental picture of Yasu, a delusional servant, in his head, not the Golden Witch. So that witch can't possibly come back.

In other words, all variations of meta-Beatrice are in fact the same Beatrice, just acting differently depending on Battler's perception of who Beatrice is. You can't forget things (lol amnesia) so once you remember, that mental image can't go away. Hence why the pre-answer Beatrice can never revive. Her image was tainted by Yasu, not just for us (the readers), but for Battler as well.

The government defunded my initiative, now I'm constantly flat-footed!

The question of the "evil nature" is an incredibly thorny one. Abnormal or antisocial behavior is not in and of itself necessarily evil. One can imagine a compulsive sadist living alone on a deserted island who has no potential to do evil because there is no one upon whom to inflict intentional pain for no readily justifiable reason.

Moreover, there is the question of whether such things are truly "nature" at all, or whether those behaviors are simply socialized.

And none of that quite gets into the moral question of whether a person who believes themselves subject to influences or compulsions they believe to be immoral is obligated not to act upon those compulsions. One would perhaps argue that not acting upon immoral influences is rather the point of morality in the first place, as morality exists to restrain behavior and create an acceptable social framework.

Given that, one could even cynically argue that morality is solely social, and antisocial behavior is "evil," even if there does not appear to be anything individually unethical about it. But that starts trampling on our concept of individuality and personal rights, and advances the notion that a person is obligated to commit personally unethical acts that are considered socially acceptable, which has justified countless atrocities. So most people are understandably inclined to reject that idea.

The opposing view would be to say that where a society is not morally in concert with a derived system of individual ethics, then it's society that is evil. But then you run right back into the initial problem that people may or may not be psychologically the same on a fundamental biological level, meaning the system of ethics that I derive may not appear ethical to you.

Some philosophers get us part of the way there but obviously this is an issue that may never be settled.

Seriously, who has a "release all the captive monsters" button? Right when I saw that, I paused the movie and debated it with my sister to death about it. In addition, who has said button next to a set of elevators where the monsters can be released at anyways? It's an awesome movie, Mr. Whedon, but come on. That's one piss poor plot device to get such a scene going.

What impression? Obviously with how he turned out, he didn't fight it hard enough. Besides, it didn't look to me like he "adamantly didn't want it," all he was doing was following what his daddy did. Sure, he tried a few things, but even if the text tries to claim a person can be born evil I won't buy it, and I'm not convinced that's what Nasu was trying to claim.

In any case, Kotomine Kirei is morally reprehensible, despicable, and utterly irredeemable. There's no room for pity in the character. He chooses to do evil things because they bring him pleasure. Nobody has forced that upon him. Trying to claim otherwise is just lunacy.

In the end nobody understood Kotomine Kirei. Not his father, nor his teacher. To struggle against one's morals, to do it over and over, and to find no fitting answer is to suffer. One does not simply struggle with this propensity for a short time. You feel it every day of your life, you fight it every time you are annoyed by someone, every time you make a decision, every time you contemplate morality. Alone, with a friend, at a party, you struggle with it.

Kotomine couldn't bring himself to feel anything other than regret at losing a potential victim when his wife died. The same was for the death of his father. He would not let the third slip by.

Call it a first world problem, call it a choice towards evil, but it is the blame of this accursed human condition. That inescapable nature that we all feel, we all experience, that which binds us all.

No, I'll blame the person responsible for the actions: Kotomine Kirei. To do otherwise is to avert one's eyes from the truth: that he did have a choice. He just chose to commit evil.

Well now, I didn't expect you to disagree that much. How troublesome.

It's perfectly true that you held off from information in the past, and though perhaps it was not for reasons of the illusion, those were the reasons you gave. From the same events we can reason that you don't want to know of those forbidden things, even if it is out of character, because you will only carry that character so far. By the way, one's character doesn't have to be far off from the truth, it can just be an exaggeration of it. After all, seacats have a responsibility to live up to their roles for dramatic effect. Though those from later generations may not understand this notion. Please refer to the precedent set by Piece vs Belphe.

If you have any further complaints then I have a Skype. Yoroshiku.

Don't worry about it. You haven't been breaking any rules. It's just the elitist mentality these people carry around.

Really, there are only two people who can ban you here:
Meta-Ushiromiya George, who is super admin of this place, but hasn't banned anyone in years. Not to mention always trying to give away his position or people trying to usurp him for it.
And Shiina "Misha" Mikado, a beloved friend of mine who usually just bans people for NWSM (Not Work Safe Material), so usually people like the Kuroneko poster gets banned on occasion. But usually that's rare as well, and those images just get deleted as well.

Case in point, don't worry about the rules that aren't posted in front, or the hidden rules. It's just some made up shit that comes from the mentality of being chained to 4chan comes from.

It's more of a running troll. But I don't like those kinds of things anyways, since they'll be around for so long, they stop being a joke and start becoming this idea people follow. Examples are waifus. It was a joke, but more and more people do set their hearts onto one particular anime character.

>Examples are waifus.
I really don't want to have this discussion yet once more, so I will simply direct your attention to the story of Pygmalion and point out that the idea of falling in love with a fictional character/abstract concept has been around since the age of cave paintings and loincloths. It's not exactly difficult to believe that same thing happens these days on a larger scale, in the modern age of escapism where fictional characters are becoming more and more idealized to the point of being caricatures of all the perceived perfections of the human race, while at the same time stripping away any negative or undesirable qualities from them.
You can call it what you want, but to claim that it ever started as a joke when the idea has been around for hundreds of years at the very least, is a little insulting and also just a tad ignorant. If anything, those who take the idea seriously and those who laugh at the ones who take it seriously have been around for equally as long as each other, because people always do love to laugh at things that they themselves do not completely understand.

I'm not sure why two imageboards should be particularly different from the rest of the world, though. I'm not trying to say that there weren't people who treated it as a joke back then (hell, I'd bet money on the fact that more than half of the people who talk about it these days still treat it as a joke and something to laugh at), only that to say it started completely as a joke with people only beginning to take it seriously recently is pretty silly.
Now, if you mean to say that the term “waifu” itself started as a joke, then I'd have to be stupid to disagree. The idea of loving an anime character has been around long before Azumanga Daioh, but it just happened that a joke word born from that show evolved into a convenient tongue-in-cheek way of referring to the idea without seeming like a crazy person.

It's more about people who treat waifus as a joke, only to later on to love them, yet may still go along with the joke.
But this is digressing to something completely different.
In conclusion, jokes can transform into something people actually believe in.
