Sarinne / “Sariel” – of the Coure of the Winter’s Night.
1)Five background bits about the character.
- Sarinne is a low-ranked ‘member’ of the Coure of the Winter’s Night. Her direct kin are considered a noble family due to being part of the Coure, but otherwise do not acquire much fame or anything.
- As a caster, Sarinne has chosen specifically to study spells that attack the mind and influence emotions, although her talents extend to other schools of magic as well. Her love of mind influencing spells is due to her fascination with how the mind works.
- At a young age, Sarinne managed to contract a displacer beast as a familiar. Her familiar, Roth, doesn’t tend to lend itself to battle much, and isn’t quite as present as Sariel sometimes likes. Still, he is a useful ally to her and a trusted familiar.
- Sarinne considers all non-Fae to be inferior to her own kind, through no fault of their own: their pathetically short lifespans simply do not lend them to give each movement the measure of appreciation and study it deserves, so they cannot help but foolishly rush their all too short lives.
- Having devoted a lot of her life to the study of magic, Sarinne abhors those who come by power through backhand tricks such as pacts and contracts. She considers sha’irs, who borrow magic, and warlocks, who draw magic from, to be poor imitations. Sorcerors, who have natural talent, are interesting, but she regards them as wasted talent who could become much more with proper training.
- Recognising that there is only so much libraries can teach her, Sarinne’s set out to see the rest of the world and explore magic in all shapes and forms. Ultimately, she hopes to rise to be one of the greater casters of the Coure of the Winter’s Night.
2)Goals the character has or which I have for them.
- Sarinne’s chief goal is to study arcane, elemental, shadow and divine magic where she can, although she considers arcane and elemental the most interesting types of spells. Through this study, she hopes to eventually compile a comprehensive encyclopaedia on magic to educate the masses, and rise to some respect among her own.
- Personally, I am hoping Sarinne will find some other method by which to establish herself as one of the Coure’s greater casters. A lifetime devoted to magic is too dull.
- Additionally, it’d be nice for Sarinne to develop a better understanding and deeper respect of the other races, so that she’s not a Fae-exclusive in her later life.
3)Secrets the character has, or secrets they don’t know about.
- Sarinne poses as Sariel, a simple eladrin mage. Her heritage, and real name, are kept secret from the outside world. Not through any kind of embarrassment or shame, but she wants to be appreciated for her own skills, rather than by proxy due to her lineage.
- Sarinne is more purer aligned to the winter than she thinks she is: she’s ghaele, although the powers associated here are more latent and will likely never come up because there are no supplements dealing with ghaele in 4e. Despair.
4)People the character knows, two friendly and one unfriendly.
- Jovian, a Human Mage who Sarinne met on her travels. His specialisation in enchantment magic did not quite struck a chord with Sarinne, but they spent many hours discussing the benefits of certain rituals. Eventually they parted ways with a promise to talk again, but this has not happened in quite some time.
- Athuliel, an Eladrin associated with the Coure of the Winter’s Night, and Sarinne’s brother. Superior to her in the arts of magic, but still her dearest brother. He is a Sorceror who specialises in storm magic, and has considerable talent for all that the magic he wields is untrained. Due to his talent, he views training and study to be needless things and has often played truant to school.
- Harmon, a Dwarf. Wrecked havoc in a tavern and left Sarinne the bill, over an argument the two had due to Sarinne’s view of other races and Harmon’s insistence that she is entirely wrong. Is fully intent to pound the error of Sarinne’s ways into her head, preferably with a hammer. Predictably, this does not actually function, and the two simply do not get along well. Luckily, they also have not met again.
5)Memories, mannerisms.
- On the night of her departure, Athuliel and Sarinne promised to meet again and have a magic duel. Sarinne thinks of this from time to time, but lends it no deeper thought as it is a matter to settle when they meet again, which is in due time.
- Sarinne remembers fondly the times he spent studying magic, and holds in her mind the memory of her first spell cast – or the feeling, rather. She hasn’t cast that spell in quite a while.
- Being considered noble, Sarinne has a tendency to assume that if something has been done wrong, there is always a way to deal, and there is no sin she could possibly commit that the world would not or could not excuse her for. So far she has had little reason to think otherwise.
