Ah, I see. I thought you were that Ange. But it doesn't matter. Welcometo /seacats/.

GG went down a long time ago. When I went there to download Kinjo/Seagull's ONS Tutorial, GG was down that time.

Well... My timezone is different from many of them too. I'm from Brazil and I have +6 hours. So, here are, now, 11:43 (In Brazil we work with 24h time, not AM/PM)

Hey.

Anything really. Just asking if there is anything game masters have to do. Like... knox rules? Or maybe some other rules you guys have.

I saw Witch in Gold made a game that doesn't have knox or dine but that was because there was no detective. If I have a detective do I need those rules? And what does it mean to have a detective?(sorry, I know Erika is a detective in Chiru but I've only read 1-4).

No set rules for it, really. Whether you use Knox and Van Dine is up to you, though mind that you play against someone. If you can't guarantee the game is fair, it might be difficult to get opponents. (Then again, people even challenge Lion's "gameboards", and they're just "Someone died. Okay, go guess.")

Well, in short; not really.

We have had games that follow knox and dine, and games that do not. I think it is more of a personal preference of the GM if the game will follow those or not.

I would say that no a game does not need a 'detective', but it is nice to have one. What I would considered the 'detective' would be a piece that is confirmed the players can trust, and know that they are not helping the culprit (well at least not knowingly) And in the end it is normally the piece that makes it to the end and solves things/dies trying. It is basically a piece that tries to figure things out and the players us, know they can trust. We know they are not assisting the culprit/s. But I guess that is incorrect, for without dine or knox, the culprit could be the 'detective' or the 'detective' could be helping. So I would suggest that if you don't use those rules, and use a detective at least confirm for the players that this character is innocent and can be trusted to some extent.

If we had a rule, I guess it would be to avoid logic errors. Which if you don't know what they are, are when reds either conflict with each other, or when a red someone forbids the answer.

examples for the 1st would be. This apple I'm holding is only red.

This apple I'm holding is black.

The two reds conflict with each other, creating confusion on what can be trusted.

The second would be, say the answer is the culprit left through the window. And a red like this was used: Nothing in the room was used to assist the culprit.

This red makes us think that nothing in the room helped the culprit, but the answer says the window is how the culprit help the room. This red completely throws the players off the path of reaching the answer.

Well those are some of my thoughts on the matter.

Ah. So that's a logic error in Umineko terms. I've heard the term but didn't know what it was.

Red is supposed to be true, so I know it can't contradict itself. I see a way around the first one if you changed the apple between saying it....but I get the picture. So thanks.

There are ways around both of them. But for example as you said, it works if I switched which apple I was holding. But why would anyone think I switched apples? Or maybe I'm holding both apples, just switching which one I'm describing? These are unfair to the person/people you are playing against and is nothing more than a cheap trick.

>>34862
Well, I'm about halfway through it right now. And I'm still interested. I can't promise you I'll get through chapter 1 this week though, since I've gotten super busy trying to finish my assignment by the end of the month,(That is it needs to arrive their by the end of the month, so I really only have 6-7 days actually) Once I finish it, I'll finish reading chapter 1, and then I would love to read chapter 2, and so on.

You told me before, didn't you? Two or three times, I think. You mentioned his introduction in Chapter 2 and I've been interested to read it since.

>>34872
Well, something like that, I guess.

You have to be careful of your wording to avoid logic errors like that ne.

That makes me think, you could even typo a logic error. Do logic errors happen often or....?

I wouldn't say they happen often, but they do happen. More often then not, on something pointless. (At least in my case, the times I've had logic errors are always on stupid things that have nothing to do with the answer whatsoever.) Also more often then not, we understand typos do happen and we aren't exactly quick to judge and throw out the 'this game is unfair! Throw into the fire! FIRE! FIRE!' We are relatively understanding.

Okay, sounds good. You don't have to finish right away. Just don't take like, 6 months to do so or something. Go at your own pace.

I agree with lili. Guessing gets extremely tedious. Knox and Van Dine are call crutches by some, but were intended by the creators to be the essential standards that a mystery novel should follow. Evidently, if there are no hints towards the mystery then it just becomes a challenge to list how many tricks could work. In fact, it would be better to liken such a game to a test of divergent thinking, rather than a battle of wits such as a detective novel. Of course that is not to say that these games are all trite. Some can be quite engaging.

Anyway, as Rosa has been saying. Without trust between the players and the opponents there is no game.

Along with others, Dine and Knox both share two important rules; that essentially the means of solving the mystery must be apparent and that there must be a detective. By using them in a game it is simply telling the readers that 'this mystery is fair' and or at least what we consider to be "fair". The detective culprit solution has been used way to much and if it is played well enough it can make the reader feel cheated. There is no need to use Knox or Dine to make a game, it just helps the mystery to seem more palatable to others.

To compound on that, the Knox and Van Dine rules basically guarantee that "the reader can solve this mystery at equal terms with the canonical solvers of the mystery, due to being presented the same evidence duly". It also means that the mystery is solvable with what has been presented.

If you take Beatrice's game in /gameboard/, for example, it declares that there is no detective and no Knox/Van Dine. Consequently, the first twilight had to be solved by a combination of wild guesses and attempting to construe the same idea the writer had. This is less exciting than knowing the solution was staring you in the face all along.

Mysteries are at their finest when they can be solved. The entire appeal of a mystery is that it can be solved.
