On the other side of the set of double-doors is what appears to be an arcane laboratory of some sorts--though it has been somewhat trashed. There are many compounds and filled vials set onto tables strewn about the room, and a large glowing pot that provides quite a bit of light.

A dark-skinned humanoid in robes and wielding staffs that pulsate with magic power stands directly before you, but not facing you--his attention is focused on the group of undead that appear to be attacking him. It would appear this figure is a revenant, and though his features suggest an elvish origin he has a prominent beard. He immediately sidesteps what appear to be blasts of pus that have been forcefully ejected at him by strange-looking mounds of undead flesh that are about four feet high and three feet wide. These abominations look to basically be animate blobs of undead skin and organs, which can skitter about on tiny insect-like legs that protrude from beneath the shifting pile of rotting tissue. The pus-like projectile they spit sizzles as it strikes the wall, appearing acidic in nature.

"Hey, that guy needs help!" Sid calls out, rushing forward and readying his hand crossbow. Noting that there is what appears to be the remains of one such creature here, as well as the remains of an undead goblin, Sid levels his crossbow at one of the offending pus spitters and fires, his enchanted bolt striking it solidly and tearing away a bit of the flesh from the top of the mound. As arcane energy snakes its way out from his crossbow and infuses itself into the weapons of Torinn, Sureiya, and Rutger's claws, another one of the undead abominations lobs some acidic pus at Sid, but manages to miss widely and hit the wall again instead.

There is one more notable creature in this room--a nine-foot tall skeletal humanoid wearing scale armor and wielding a black scimitar and a shield with a spider emblem. On its head sits a horned helmet, and its eyes burn with a white fire as it stares down the living creature assembled before it.

Pus Spitter 1 misses Ramuh with spit pus.
Pus Spitter 2 misses Ramuh with spit pus.
Sid moves and uses magic weapon, hitting pus spitter 2 for 14 damage. Torinn, Rutger, and Sureiya gain a +1 power bonus to attack rolls and a +4 power bonus to damage rolls until the end of his next turn. http://orokos.com/roll/201625
Pus Spitter 3 misses Sid with spit pus.
It's now Ramuh's turn.

"This guy..." The ranger, now free from the Lich's affliction, runs to the other side of battlefield and slashes the wounded spitter. Then, he asks to the Lich, in a loud voice.

"Was Ragrim Dragonsworn your master in life?"

Rutger is just slightly too slow to swipe the pus spitter as it is thrown about by the wind. However, it doesn't last long as Sureiya charges across the battlefield to enter melee combat with it and slashes it straight down the middle. It barely has time to comprehend its fate before the shaman calls her spirit back into battle before dissolving it into a psychic attack that blasts the last bit of energy that kept it moving right out of the horrid thing. The other nearby pus spitter isn't much more fortunate, and its pus spatter is rendered useless as it is lured away from the dragonborn's mount.

Gallard slams his staff into the ground again, and the leyline resonates briefly before releasing a series of tremors that ripple over the entire battlefield, throwing all of the groundborn adventurers slightly off-balance and breaking apart the outer rim of the platform. It is now quite precarious to be on the outer areas of the platform, and yet you can tell that another ground quake is coming from the room's center, so it would be best to get some distance between yourselves and it. Meanwhile, the area where Sureiya had been standing just seconds earlier suddenly cracks apart and juts upwards briefly, and clearly would've caused him great harm if he'd still been there.

This new position the pus spitter finds itself in is ideal for avoiding Torinn's aura, and it takes advantage of this fact--Gallard gestures to the ebony fly, and the pus spitter lobs its acidic pus in that direction. As it lands, the fly loses its corporeality briefly before disappearing completely, and the warlock falls to the ground. The pus spitter then skitters south.

As Gallard pulls his staff upwards, he regards the shaman with scorn, "You concern yourself entirely too much with what is 'fair,' overdweller... it doesn't matter whether or not it is fair, it simply is." Addressing the half-orc, the lich says, "My loyalty lies with the chieftain of the Dragonsworn, whomever that may be..."

Rutger's raking claw misses.
Sureiya moves, then uses marauder's rush to charge pus spitter 2, hitting for 28 damage.
Bernkastel draws her spear and uses call spirit companion. Bernkastel uses emerald lure, hitting pus spitter 2 for 13 psychic damage and critting pus spitter 1 for 27 psychic damage. Pus spitter 1 slides 1 square and pus spitter 2 is dead.
Gallard uses mastery of the leyline, allowing the leyline to use tremors. Torinn, Bernkastel, Sid, Ramuh, and Sureiya are hit for 9 damage, Rutger is missed for 4 damage (which is resisted). The leyline is at 2 charges of earthen rage.
Pus spitter 2 uses spit pus and hits the ebony fly for 9 acid damage and ongoing 5 acid damage, destroying it. Myn falls prone.
Pus spitter 2 moves.

Torinn races over to the area near the other pus spitter, and Rutger attempts to bowl it over but trips and fails to connect at all with its claws, though manages to keep itself upright and on the platform at least. Sid moves north, attempting to rendezvous with the dragonborn and its riders, but his own shot goes quite wide as his crossbow malfunctions at the last second. In a symphony of ineffectiveness, the pus spitter also completely bounces off Torinn's leg armor as it attempts to slam him, and it is seared by the paladin's divine radiance as it pulls away.

Torinn moves, and Rutger's battle pounce misses pus spitter 3.
Sid moves. Sid misses pus spitter 3 with magic weapon. http://orokos.com/roll/207354
Pus spitter 3 misses Torinn with slam. It shifts 1 square and takes 14 radiant damage (up from 9).

Ramuh absent-mindedly drops a thunderbomb in the distance.

"I know naught of the history between you and these adventurers, yet your duty strikes me as folly. Do you not see that your master's quest would only provoke more such as you and I, past souls who cling to life in order to avenge a great evil done unto their people?" The eladrin shakes his head as he makes the thunderbomb explode, his attention still on the lich. "Your vengeance might well serve only to let others rise in vengeance. Such short-term thinking does not become one with life as lengthy as yours."

"It matters not," replies the lich as Ramuh launches a thunderous sphere at the pus spitters, blasting one of them and splitting it open, causing it to ooze pus all over the ground. It still appears to be functional, though it's badly wounded. Gallard clutches his staff with both hands and bends towards Ramuh, tossing a shadowy bolt in the shaman's direction (which doesn't hit) as he says, "When I swore my service to my chieftain, it meant putting aside my own feelings on such matters... and to obey his will, regardless of how mad he has become! To fulfill my duty is my very existence!"

Meanwhile, Sid is having an unpleasant time with the nearby pus spitter, which coats him in the disgusting, acidic fluid before skittering away. "I could use some assistance over here!" the gnome cries out.

Ramuh's thunder bomb hits pus spitter 3 for 33 thunder damage, and it is slowed and bloodied. Ramuh sustains his zone and moves.
Gallard uses nether bolt, but misses Bernkastel.
Pus spitter 4 uses spit pus, which hits Sid for 17 acid damage and ongoing 5 acid damage (save ends). It then moves.

"We're on it," replies the shaman, conjuring wind spirits to direct the tiger and bracing for the incoming quake.

Move action: Reorient the Axis. Sureiya and Rutger can shift 5 squares each.
- One possibility is moving to K/L-23/24 to give Sid superior cover from Epicenter. I can recommend this.
- If Torinn wants Rutger's passengers to be safer, he could instead move further away from the lich, but two constraints: Torinn needs to be within my spirit's movement range, and Sid needs to be within Healing Spirit's range.
- SC next to Torinn after move, but as close to the remaining spitter as possible.

Sureiya stalks across the battlefield, leveling his gaze at the wounded undead thing, and hurls his magic blade in its direction. It slices off a large chunk, returns to the half-orc's hand, and he throws it again, this time slicing it into small enough pieces such that it stops moving. From the tiger's back, the shaman conjures some air elementals that infuse the nearby party members and carry them across the battle.

Sureiya moves and sets his quarry. Sureiya uses ranged twin strike, hitting twice and killing the pus spitter.
Bernkastel uses reorient the axis, letting Sureiya shift. Torinn can choose where Rutger shifts.

Wind spirits guide the dragonborn's mount in front of the gnome, and Bernkastel aids him with a healing spirit. The shaman then draws forth her inner vitality to boost herself back up as well, and readies herself for incoming attacks.

Slowly raising his staff, the lich slams it into the ground, exactly in sync with a large pulse from the leyline. The resulting ripples spread outwards, completely rolling over the mounted group as well as the warlock, throwing them off-balance and bombarding them with upheaval. The furthest adventurers manage to avoid damage completely, however, nimbly dodging the ripples that are too small to be harmful by the time they reach them. The outermost edge of the platform falls away and smashes to the obsidian ground below.

It is at this point that the earthen ward begins to slow its spinning around the lich, and several of the biggest rocks appear to have fused together... and in their center lies a black stone that vaguely resembles an anatomical heart. This stone is moving quite slowly and would be much easier to hit and damage than the others, and Sid calls out, pointing, "We've got to destroy that! It's the core of the ward! Destroy it quickly, and we'll overload the ward, but if we take too long, we're in real trouble!"

Torinn shifts as part of reorient the axis. Bernkastel uses healing spirit, Sid spends a surge to regain 22 hit points (3 from his set bonus and 2 from Bern's items). Torinn regains 9 hit points.
Bernkastel uses her second wind, spending a surge to regain 15 hit points. Bernkastel also gains a +2 bonus to all defenses until the start of her next turn.
Using mastery of the leyline, Gallard has the leyline use epicenter, hitting Myn, Torinn, Rutger, and Bernkastel, but missing Ramuh, Sureiya, and Sid. Myn takes 18 damage, Bernkastel, Rutger, and Torinn take 23 damage (Rutger reduces to 13). Ramuh, Sureiya, and Sid take 0 damage.
The obsidian heart is exposed.

The obsidian heart can be damaged, and its hit point total and defenses are tied to Gallard's. The heart being active means Gallard can now use stone shackles and will begin charging earthen fury, expanding his aura first to aura 3, then to aura 5, then unleashing the attack, each on the mastery of the leyline initiative counts (in addition to using leyline attacks on the first two).

The lich faces the gnome, and nods. "Clever," he says in a calm, even voice. "That is the one weakness of the ward... fail to destroy it, though..." he raises his staff, and it glows with a brilliant orange energy, "And the earth will grind your bones to dust!"

Sid (Arcana): The obsidian heart shares hit points with Gallard. Reducing him to zero hit points will destroy the heart and cause the ward to malfunction. Until it does so, on each of the mastery of the leyline initiatives, Gallard's shifting earth aura will expand, first to aura 3, and then to aura 5, in addition to him making attacks with weight of the land and tremors. Following those, when the aura is 5, instead of using epicenter, earthen fury will be used, a close burst 10 attack that deals some damage and pushes 10 squares on a hit, half damage and 5 squares on a miss. Being pushed off the platform with earthen fury forfeits your saving throw to avoid being pushed off.
In addition, Gallard can now use stone shackles, an encounter minor action attack that restrains a target (escape DC 19) on a hit. This attack is reliable but can only be used once per round.

A hole opens in the sky, and from it emerges a brilliantly glowing meteor which crashes into the ground, burning both the obsidian heart and the pus spitter with a blazing radiance. The glare somewhat diminishes Torinn's ability to see, though, and his attempted attack doesn't quite manage to cut into the pus spitter's shambling form. Sid is also unsuccessful--his enchanted bolt careens off into the distance instead of planting itself in the undead blob, though he does manage to brush off the remainder of the still-lingering acid.

Myn moves and curses the heart. Myn uses blazing starfall, hitting the obsidian heart for 24 radiant damage and the pus spitter for 21 radiant damage (up from 16).
Torinn uses his virtue of sacrifice, using his second wind to spend a surge, and Bernkastel regains 15 hit points. Torinn moves.

As Ramuh speaks, his hurricane drifts to harmlessly engulf the Earthen Ward and the lich within. The ward seems to still protect Gallard from its effects, but the pus spitter is ill-prepared for the bulging burst of lightning that descends upon it, nearly tearing it to pieces outright. Even as it attempts to spatter some pus in response, a warning in the form of an iron shield spirit briefly interposes in front of Torinn, guiding a radiant-infused attack from the paladin in order to strike the pus spitter down once and for all.

Only the lich and his protective wards remain now. Ramuh, infused with the power of the storm, flies north with one swift hop. The lich turns to face the adversaries arrayed before it, and says simply, "Very well..." before hurling a bolt of necrotic energy at Torinn. And though it strikes the dragonborn's chest solidly, Sid is quick to react--a bolt enchanted with a great deal of restorative energy pierces the obsidian heart, shattering its center and embedding itself in the heart's center. The whole ward seems to shudder briefly as the bolt dissolves into a wave of invigoration that restores Torinn's vitality, and reinforces the resolve of both the shaman and the sorcerer. "I think you may have made a slight miscalculation, lich!" the gnome calls out. Grunting, Gallard whirls north and pounds his staff head into his empty hand. On command, a set of shackles erupt from the earth below Sureiya and grasp his legs, and then another set rises to grasp his arms as well. The ranger is utterly restrained.

Ramuh moves his zone and sustains it.
Ramuh uses lightning strike, critting the pus spitter for 41 lightning damage, bloodying it. This pushes it and Ramuh flies.
The pus spitter attempts to use pus spatter as a reaction, but Bernkastel interrupts the hit on Torinn with powerful warning, and Torinn's melee basic attack hits the pus spitter for 29 radiant damage (up from 24), killing it. http://orokos.com/roll/207683

"I'm on it!" Sid calls out, even as Sureiya shatters the stone shackles with a mighty lunge forward. The half-orc hurls his blade at the distant lich twice once more, but neither strike is successful in connecting with the heart, and they bounce harmlessly off the shards of earth that surround the lich. The shaman quickly dismisses her spirit and calls it back, shielding Torinn against most of the necrotic energy that is continuing to affect him, and then directs another spirit to guide the warlock's eldritch beam. The beam does find its mark, and damages the heart a bit--though it still looks quite intact.

"It will take more than that to shatter the ward..." Gallard comments, holding both hands in front of himself as they swirl with a brownish-orange energy. "The rage of the land grows stronger...!" As he says this, the area of shifting earth that has been surrounding the lich for the entire battle expands greatly, and two depressions form around Sid and Sureiya, threatening to swallow them up. Sid cries out as he is inconvenienced, though Sureiya manages to pull his leg out of the swirling earth before it can pull him in, though he's still surrounded by it.

The heart takes another 5 lightning damage from lightning strike.
Sureiya escapes, then sets his quarry. Sureiya's ranged twin strike misses twice.
Bernkastel dismisses and resummons her spirit, and direct the strike lets Myn use eldritch blast, hitting the Obsidian Heart for 28 damage.
Using mastery of the leyline, Gallard commands the leyline to use weight of the land. Sid is hit and slowed, and Sureiya is missed. Two zones form.

The heart being active means Gallard can now use stone shackles and will begin charging earthen fury, expanding his aura first to aura 3, then to aura 5, then unleashing the attack, each on the mastery of the leyline initiative counts (in addition to using leyline attacks on the first two).

The warlock strides across the battlefield, and lazy tries to corrupt the obsidian heart with an injection of necrotic worms, but Gallard's stalwart will repels the attempt.

Myn moves, and his darkworm feast misses the obsidian heart.

Torinn races forward, attempting to slash the obsidian heart with a divinely enchanted blade, but the heart's rocky exterior deflects the blade. Regardless, it is still burned a bit by the residual radiant energy, and Torinn's magic belt prevents him from being pushed too far away by the sliding earth beneath his feet.

Sid crouches slightly and waits for a better time to act.

Torinn moves then charges with holy smite, but his melee basic attack misses the lich for 9 radiant damage. Torinn is slid 2 squares but reduces the forced movement by 1.
Sid delays.

Ramuh's lightning doesn't seem to affect the obsidian heart, merely spraying over the stone ineffectively, but his conjured storm does manage to whisk Sid to safety. Sid takes advantage of being safe to move into the center of the now-grouped adventurers and fire a flame-enchanted bolt directly into the heart's center. It erupts into flames that are so hot they apparently melt the obsidian shell a bit, and then the weapons of Sid, Torinn, and Bernkastel begin to take on a fiery glow, as well as Rutger's claws, and the implements of both the warlock and shaman. The obsidian heart now looks slightly deformed and cracked, causing the lich to start to laugh.

"It's been a while since combat exerted me to such an extent... how invigorating!" he cries, hurling a pair of nether bolts at the dragonborn and half-orc. A canister the gnome tosses manages to give Torinn enough vitality to shrug off the brunt of the nether bolt that strikes him, though its necrotic energies begin again to eat away at him. The bolt aimed at Sureiya is just slow enough for the half-orc to duck it, and it flies over his shoulder. Sid manages to shake enough of the earth still clinging to his boots such that he is no longer weighed down.

Torinn saves against ongoing damage.
Ramuh misses the obsidian heart with lightning strike.
Ramuh sustains and moves his zone.
Sid begins his turn and Ramuh slides him 2 squares. Sid moves, and uses burning weapons, hitting Gallard for 19 fire damage. He uses his targeting crossbow daily power, until the end of Sid's next turn, Sid and his allies can roll twice on attacks against the obsidian heart and use either result. Sid, Myn, Rutger, Torinn, and Bernkatel gain the effect of burning weapons, dealing 4 extra damage with fire and weapon attacks.
Sid uses resistive formula on Torinn, he gains a +1 power bonus to AC and can end the effect as a free action to gain 24 temporary hit points. Torinn immediately does so.

The shaman commands her spirit to move towards the warlock and then forcefully infuses it. Myn's eldritch blast lances through the obsidian heart, piercing it completely. "Bernkastel" then recalls her spirit, granting Torinn a bit of additional shielding in the process. Meanwhile, Sureiya stalks forward and throws his magic returning sword once more, slicing into the thick obsidian of the heart twice, flames scorching away layers from it as each hit lands.

Even as Gallard attempts to channel the leyline for one last attack, Sureiya seizes the moment to throw his blade again. The obsidian heart shatters from the impact, and the rocks orbiting the lich seem to seize up. Gallard staggers back with an "Urgh...", and then the shards shudder and pack themselves around the lich, forming a protective shell that completely covers the skeletal orc. The resulting rock formation looks quite similar to one of the granite gaols, but much larger and, by your estimation, completely indestructible.

The chamber is quiet and still.

Bernkastel moves her spirit and uses spirit infusion. Myn's eldritch blast hits Gallard for 39 damage.
Sureiya moves. Sureiya uses ranged twin strike, hitting once for 26 damage and once for 27 damage.
Gallard uses mastery of the leyline to use tremors, but Sureiya interrupts with disruptive strike, which hits for 23 damage, destroying the obsidian heart.
When the obisidan heart is destroyed, the lich is sealed in an impenetrable gaol.

There is a loud "thud" sound as an immense boulder suddenly appears in the entryway, blocking it off. It glows ominously, making you think it was placed there magically and intentionally. It could probably be cleared if given some time and effort.

Though a calm has settled over the leyline chamber, you feel as though something in the gaol is still stirring...

Torinn is still taking ongoing 5 necrotic damage and will continue to do so until he saves.
After that is resolved, you can take a mini-short rest.

During this rest, you may recover one encounter attack power (or equivalent holy smite), one encounter utility power (Inspiring Word counts), and one other encounter power granted to you by your race or class (like Inspiring Word, so you can recover both if you choose), or an item. You may spend 1 or 2 healing surges as well, and take actions like positioning yourselves or eating the silver tear fruits, or using a battle standard of healing. "Until the end of the encounter" effects will end at the rest's conclusion.

If Torinn doesn't save before his turn, then I'll spend 2 minor actions with Spirit of Vigor in addition to the save grant, giving him 4 THP each turn and effectively reducing ongoing damage to 1. Planting battle standard after all that's dealt with.

Shaken by his poor performance during the fight, Torinn only recovers from the injuries dealt to him with Sureiya and Bernkastel's aid. He gives Rutger some respite by sending him back to the safety of the Astral Sea. He spends some time to meditate and recover, then calls Rutger back, climbing into the saddle again.

His reserves of vitality almost totally exhausted, Torinn attempts to pray to the Platinum Dragon for guidance, but his prayer is swallowed by the darkness. Torinn instead puts his mask back on and bangs his shield with his sword.

"It's never over the first time. But Mr. Ramuh, could you see if you can quickly reach and break open that gaol before the lich comes back, maybe with the help of the tiger?"

4 THP for all but me.

Recovering Inspiring Word, Healing Spirit, and Powerful Warning.

Sid hastily begins to recharge his infusions, calling upon the warlock and sorcerer for their last reserves of strength to aid him. He's breathing heavily at first, but slowly begins to regain his own strength

Sid rests according to >>75398
He recovers both infusions and burning weapons.

"Mr. Ramuh is doing something, so I'll do it."

Taking Ramuh's place for surge donation. I have 1 surge left, and Ramuh has 3.

"Very well." As a scion from Luruar, Ramuh sees little reason to take a reprieve right now; his lightning strike is basically the most potent spell he has, and he feels the storm brewing within. Enough for another, say, ten minutes of lightning strikes, if it comes to that.

Ramuh takes Rutger, mounts the tiger a little uneasily, then from as close as they can get, starts blasting the gaol with lightning and an occasional surge of ice, careful not to overdo it.

Attacking gaol:

All damage is non-lethal if possible, halt and forfeit any attacks if the gaol breaks open.

With the deed done, Ramuh dismounts Rutger, leads the cat back to Torinn, thanks the Paladin and addresses the Shaman.

"Was this your intent?"

The gaol bursts with two attacks that succeed in hitting, and an unconscious eladrin in what appears to be magic robes drops to the ground. She doesn't move after that, and may be unconscious or dead--though the more perceptive of the lot can see that she's still breathing.
