Mongols are DLC, I think~ But yes~ I should note that world conquest is only one of the four possible victory conditions, however~
In my current game I'm playing Augustus Caesar of Rome, and I'm playing an expansion-heavy game, maxing out the Liberty social policy tree first and founding a pantheon which gives me a culture/faith bonus to wine and incense, because there were several sources near my starting location~ Then when I used a Great Prophet to found Christianity, I selected monasteries as one of my benefits, as a building I can purchase with faith that adds extra culture and faith for cities with wine and incense nearby~
Also, Washington of America was nearby and declared war on me early, but I was prepared! I had two warriors and three archers nearby, and I moved two warriors into defensive positions near my city to absorb attacks from his units (retreated them when they got low), and fired on his approaching troops with my archers, using the nearby hills to my advantage. This was enough to hold him off until I finished off Iron Working and got Iron hooked up, at which point I promptly upgraded my warriors to Roman Legions, built a few new ones and some ballistae, and marched over to take his third city and his capital city, for daring to attack mighty Rome~ I declared peace though, because his second city was in a very hard to approach area and I couldn't deal damage to it fast enough to avoid losing my units in the process. Still, he's no threat any longer, so now I have more land and the mightiest military in the world, and still remain a decisive tech leader because of my early investment in libraries and utilizing the Roman unique trait, which gives +25% production to any building that is present in your capital while other cities are building them~
