Every year, a few druglords and such are captured and get into jail (In Mexico Capital punishment doesn't exist).
This cost the country time, resources and human lifes. And you know what happens then? Jails get damn full because we have too many people in them and damn druglords prepare an escape and get free.

In any case, I think the entire "jury of peers" business is flawed to begin with. You shouldn't let commoners who know little of law and who aren't paid to be impartial decide whether a man is innocent or guilty, especially if the composition of the jury can be influenced by lawyers.
