Defending like a defender should. Furdoka is accompanied by two Stakes. Won't have Furdoka make an appearance in any way resembling this monster but I felt it was nice to work out, and know if the punishment on ignoring its mark isn't a bit too fierce.

Should be +2 at best. +5 is just not fun for an illusion specialist.

Bland, but workable. Kind of weak in they need to hit to mark.
>Truth's Eye
The wording on this makes it too strong. Keeping in mind that it's an auto-hit power, it's basically 10 free damage against creatures that are already adjacent to the monster (they cannot possibly move closer unless they actually move into its space). I could see it marking without a hit, but the other effects are too strong to place on an auto-hit power. Also, it should probably carry a 1/turn restriction.

These are fine.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea to use the +2 bonus to attacks that soldiers used to innately get. I don't think the latest generation of monsters use either it or the -2 penalty to attacks that brutes used to get.

Along these lines, WHY is its attack bonus so high?! I checked the level 13 soldiers from the MV, and their attack bonus is +18 vs. AC, +16 vs. NADs. It looks to me like you boosted the attack bonus granted by the Adventure Tools, which is already artificially inflated due to using the "old" rules of +2 to attacks for soldiers. I could see boosting the attack rolls of situational attacks by +2 (I do this sometimes, particularly for soldier punishment attacks), but boosting every attack so high seems arbitrary.

One last thing: "shadow" is not actually an energy type used for damage. I think you meant "necrotic."

If Rooga by chance reads this, THIS here is why I tend to favor growth-heavy, military-light starts.

Small leads eventually build up to massive ones.

I mean, just look at that MFG. I'm putting out about 5-6 military units every 2 turns without slaving or drafting. At epic speed! Considering I'm at the age of Rifles and Cavalry while my opponents are defending with Longbows and Horse Archers, I just overrun them completely.

I figured you just have a hard time not to make it sound mean. It's okay, I totes get you didn't intend to be. The monster was taken from a template of a Duergar Blackguard, so its boring attack is from there, as are its defences and the attack bonus of +20. Lookit it, it's a level 13 Soldier Elite.

I agree with the mark punishment~

I'm using this feedback to adjust the Soldier I've got for the first encounter, though, since it shares some similarities.

Allow me to explain. The blackguard is from the MM2. There is a clear shift in design philosophy from what we call generation one and two monsters, which are monsters from the MM1/2 and other books published around the same time, and the later generation of monsters, called generation three monsters.

Generation three monsters, those being from the Monster Manual 3, the Dark Sun campaign setting, and the Monster Vault (and including monsters from then on), are generally accepted as more challenging and better balanced than the previous generations. Lots of things have been changing as monsters have become more and more advanced.

To put it simply, in the early generations of monsters, soldiers received a +2 bonus to attacks. Likewise, brutes received a -2 penalty to attacks. These are two things that seem to have fallen out of favor in monster design as of the Monster Vault. However, the Adventure Tools monster builder still defaults to giving soldiers an attack bonus that is two higher than the default, and I believe Artillery receive the same bonus. However, the design philosophy there has also shifted, and it seems that artillery only now receive the +2 bonus on their ranged attacks.

I tend to advocate the newer standards rather than the older ones.

On the top of this image is the suggested statistics for building monsters included in the DMG. I have modified the statistics based on the new standards on the bottom.

A few things of note:
*Monster NADs (non-AC defenses) tend to vary slightly based on their ability scores.
*The artillery attack value is valid for their ranged and area attacks, but should be decreased by 2 for melee and close attacks.
*Situational/triggered attacks may have their attack value boosted by up to +2.
