Mind of Steel is actually the opposite of the HF Shirou in general.
Worst characters is a yes, because Zouken isn't fit to lick Gilgamesh's boots as far as a primary villain goes, True Assassin is extremely weak in the "cool" department when paired against Caster, her master, Fake Assassin and Lancer, and Rider is just boring in FS/N. Maybe in FH/A she's better, but in FS/N she's pretty much a cardboard cutout.
Give me a choice between "other servant who serves as Shirou's ally towards the end" and Lancer is miles and miles ahead of Rider, mostly because he's much more entertaining.
And yes, the final battle scene in HF sucks. It's glorified so much, but it's basically just Kotomine beating on Shirou until he runs out of gas. I had heard all the hype about it and was all prepared for it to be awesome, but was severely disappointed. I want more Shirou being SHIROU, and that usually includes projection magic because that's where Shirou is unique in battle. Just seeing him use his fists is not very exciting, and apparently not very effective either.
Sparks Liner High is great, I'll give you that. I still felt a LOT more emotion and excitement towards the end of UBW than all of HF.
