I think 2 gets a lot of hate because of its grindy stat/battle system, but it was also the first game to include many things that continued onto future FF games, like a cast of individual characters with their own motivations and feelings, a non-static party, chocobos, and an "epic" plot with twists and turns. I did not hate it at all, though I agree that building up your characters was rather tedious.

A thought occurs. People could write in characters, one per person, and state whether it should have a romantic route or not. We then tally up the people whose characters have romantic routes, and select three or four of them in addition to the obligatory forever alone route.

That way we can maintain the community effort but abstain from writing in people, maximising the rabu rabu potential.

Sounds easy enough. School settings are among the easiest to work with, anyway.
The VN I mentioned that I gave up on before was going to be a cyberpunk sort of thing, meaning the backgrounds couldn't just be photos put through some filter and I'd have needed to design each of them in 3DCG, which would have meant learning how to do that and that would require effort and actually being productive, etc. Or drawing all of them by hand which would be equally as boring.
My next thought was to make the artwork in 8bit style and having chiptune music like that new Steins;Gate sequel coming out, but then I realized I couldn't even do that much. ;_;

The thing is, I studied Graphic Design in high school for years so it's not like I can't do that stuff if I tried. And I'm actually good at composing music as well. Come to think of it, about the only thing I couldn't handle would be the character art because I cannot into proper anatomy.
