As the black dragon lifts off, Valanor also takes off--in hot pursuit. The two dragons chase each other over the horizon as Torinn rides his pegasus mount closer to the battle. The cultists spare a brief look up towards the dragons, then turn again to face the party, and everyone is now ready for battle.

The genasi readies his magical weaponry for combat. He notices that the harnesses that connected the carts to the rage drakes are falling loose--the cultists must have cut them as they jumped off the carts.

"You cannot stop Tiamat's return! Dragons will rise and claim this realm!"

"Those that She does not deem worthy will perish! Our only recourse is to give Her Her due!"

"Salvation lies with the chromatics! Death to the metallics!"

Nature Rage drakes are ferocious beasts that are much more difficult to tame than smaller drakes, but can still be domesticated if training begins at a young age. They are occasionally used as beasts of burden or as companion creatures to larger humanoids, such as blackscale lizardfolk or giants, but are notorious for being vicious and difficult to control even when well-trained. These mature rage drakes are tough and battle-hardened war beasts (level 11 brutes). With that said, though they are well-trained, their battle tactics are not very sophisticated, they simply attack with tooth and claw.

Rage drakes attack in close range despite their size (their melee attacks have a reach of 1). They strike enemies and seize them in their enormous claws on their forearms (raking claws is a melee 1 attack vs. AC, one or two creatures, if it targets one creature it attacks twice and it can use this attack in place of a melee basic attack when charging, on a hit deals damage and grabs the target [escape DC 27]). Once it has a target grabbed, it attempts to rip it apart with its teeth (bite is its melee basic attack, hits for damage, and has a critical range of 17-20 against an enemy grabbed by the rage drake). Rage drakes are also especially violent when wounded (when bloodied, their blood rage activiates, giving them a big bonus to both attack and damage rolls).

The cult dragonwing is a higher-ranking member of the Cult of the Dragon, and it appears that its cloak is designed to allow the cultist to glide through the air (it is a level 11 skirmisher). Though they are not leaders, they rank above the dragonclaws and dragonfangs.

The cult dragonclaws form the backbone of the ranks of the Cult of the Dragon. They typically wield scimitars and javelins, which are unremarkable weapons in most ways, but they are trained to attack with either. They are rank and file soldiers with an aim towards defense, wearing scale armor and using shields (level 10 soldiers, and their double attack lets them attack twice, using scimitar or javelin for either attack). In addition, they threaten the area around them, and will strike out viciously at foes that let their guard down (defender aura I don't believe I need to repeat the statistics for, and dragonfang strike triggers when a creature affected by a dragonclaw's defender aura willingly leaves the aura or makes an attack that doesn't include a creature with defender aura among its targets, dealing heavy damage and immobilizing the target until the start of its next turn on a hit, and half damage on a miss. Their melee basic scimitar attacks also slow on a hit).

"These drakes look strong, and are probably hard to control when they feel endangered" Reiyasu tells to the party. "Maybe we should focus on defeating the cultists."

At the same time he finishes his explanation about the Drakes, the mid-aged ranger rushes against one of the cultists and badly pummels his face with the end of his quarterstaff. Immediately after that, a blue-ish aura starts emanating from the ranger's weapon, then Reiyasu follows his first assault with an accurate double strike.

Torinn swoops down on Rutger's new flying form, issuing the divine challenge of his god upon the rage drake before striking the cultist with the flat of one of Nightfall's twin blades. The cultist staggers briefly from the blow, then blinks--the paladin has disappeared from his field of vision.

As the one cultist rubs his eyes, Reiyasu dashes towards the other cultist--the one north of the rage drake--and smacks it solidly with a surprising blow from the off-end of his quarterstaff. He follows through, striking twice more, and the cultist gasps and blood splatters from its mouth after the ranger strikes him solidly in the gut.

Ramuh drifts to the south, then unleashes a flurry of lightning bolts. Despite the clear skies, there is a rolling sound of thunder fills the air as the cultist engaged with Reiyasu drops, the smell of burning flesh nearly overwhelming the nearby ranger. However, the follow-up strike is deflected off the shield of the befuddled cultist near Torinn. With a mighty roar, the nearest red-skinned rage drake seizes the dragonborn with both claws, and though they clang off the paladin's armor, Torinn feels the force of the blows through the armor.

Torinn flies and uses divine challenge on rage drake it. He draws Nightfall in longsword form and charges cult dragonclaw 2, hitting for 14 damage and 5 psychic damage using ardent strike with mocking smite, and Torinn becomes invisible to the target until the end of his next turn.
Reiyasu moves then uses off-hand strike against dragonclaw 1, hitting for 18 damage. He then uses lashing leaves, hitting twice thanks to heroic effort to hit for 25 damage and 23 damage. Dragonclaw 1 takes 4 extra damage when hit until the end of Sureiya's next turn.

The shaman swaps her tools as she approachs and calls forth her elemental spirit once more, and it generates a windy shield to protect nearby allies. However, when she summons her other spirit and infuses it into Ramuh, the cultist seems completely unaffected by the lightning that descends upon it. It briefly twitches and seems confused, but is otherwise undamaged.

Bernkastel swaps weapons then moves. Bernkastel uses spirit of athas to call her elemental spirit. Bernkastel calls her spirit companion with sudden call and uses spirit infusion on Ramuh, but Ramuh's dragonfrost misses.

Myn strides forward confidently and utters his vile curse against the nearest dragonclaw, his owlbear scurrying over to take up a position on the soldier's flank. An agonizing mental attack leaves the cultist reeling in pain, and it seems to be bleeding from the mouth and nose. However, Reiyasu finds the other rage drake suddenly bearing down on him, and is soon grasped in one of the beast's raking claws.

Ganging up on the quarterstaff-wielding human, another cultist charges into the fray, drawing his scimitar and slashing a shallow groove through Reiyasu's scale armor. The dragon cultist with the winged cloak walks forward, then spreads his arm and leaps high into the air, somehow taking flight and landing beside the isolated warlock. His blades flash, driving Myn back, though causing very little in the way of physical harm--the half-elf is still too alert for that.

Despite not being able to see the dragonborn, the bloodied cultist still feels compelled to strike out where he was last--and somehow, his scimitar manages to find a gap in Torinn's armor, despite not being able to see him. The blade comes back covered in the paladin's blood, though the nearby elemental's air shield managed to soften the blow a bit.

Myn moves and places his warlock's curse on dragonclaw 2. His owlbear moves too.
Myn uses shared agony, hitting dragonclaw 2 for 34 psychic damage. This bloodies the dragonclaw.
Rage drake 2 charges Reiyasu with raking claws, missing once and hitting once for 10 damage, and Sureiya is grabbed (escape DC 27).

Upon being hit, and consequently bloodied, Torinn becomes a whirlwind of action. The cultist's clumsy attempt to attack him again results in a vicious reprisal that leaves it open to further attacks. Rutger can't pull him free from the rage drake's jaws, but Torinn doesn't relent against the cultist, striking once with an accurate attack, and then striking again through the magic of a talisman he carries, overwhelming the cultist completely. An unseen force lashes out at the rage drake after the cultist falls.

Though the shaman's prescient warning allows Reiyasu to evade the scimitar swing leveled at him, his counter-strike is turned aside by the dragonclaw's armor. Bernkastel uses powerful warning, but Reiyasu's melee basic attack misses. The +2 bonus does make the dragonclaw's scimitar miss, though.

The genasi revenant strides towards the dragonwing, unleashing an arcing stream of lightning as he moves forward. The bolt passes through the dragonwing, then twists towards the dragonclaw and strikes it solidly in the chest. The scimitar-wielding cultist convulses and doubles over briefly, but remains standing on two shaky legs.

Ramuh immediately strikes out with more lightning, his weapon discharging right into the nearby cloaked cultist. It staggers from the onslaught, seeming to incense the nearby rage drake. The beast snarls and bites into Torinn, its teeth easily piercing the scale armor and bloodying the paladin even more--the elemental is keeping him barely clinging to consciousness at this point.

Ramuh uses arc lightning, hitting the cult dragonclaw for 37 lightning damage and the cult dragonwing for 42 lightning damage

The shaman quickly resummons her spirit companion before infusing it into the human ranger, and a solid strike of Reiyasu's quarterstaff knocks the cultists unconscious. She then calls upon the power of an earth archon to bolster Torinn's strength, and the dragonborn looks healthier, though still bloody.

Myn steps to the side as his owlbear charges into the fray, and he unleashes a blast of darkworms upon the last remaining cultist, who collapses even as the worms continue to decay his flesh. He seems to have drawn a minor bit of strength from Torinn's pain, as well.

Bernkastel uses call spirit companion. Bernkastel uses inspiring word, and Torinn spends a surge to regain 35 hit points.
Bernkastel uses spirit infusion, and Reiyasu's melee basic attack hits the dragonclaw for 34 damage, incapacitating the cultist.

The drakes snarl and spit at Ramuh's words, and for good measure, the drake Torinn just withdrew from pounces on Myn and pins the unfortunate half-elf between two raking claws, which tear gouges in his exposed flesh.

Torinn's dragonskull mask seems to have a terrifying effect on the nearest drake, and it begins to cower before the dragonborn and looks ready to bolt away. Meanwhile, Reiyasu manages to struggle free of the other drake's grasp, and looks around the battlefield for clues.

Reiyasu: (Insight and Perception) Upon reviewing the drakes' behavior during the fight, he thought it quite curious as to how the rage drakes did not even consider the cultists during the fight. No normal animal training would account for their behavior, so there must be something else affecting them. An enchantment upon the drakes is possible. On the other hand, an item on the cultists that influences the drake's behavior is also possible... something like Remallia's description of the dragon masks.

While the dragon masks these cultists are wearing are not as grandiose as the black dragon mask Reiyasu's son recovered, he cannot discount the possibility that they could have minor magical properties.

Torinn uses glowering threat and it's super effective. Torinn moves.

As far as Ramuh can remember, there are no tales involving tamed rage drakes. There are occasional rumors or conjecture that they are kept as pets by giants or other large humanoids, but you've never met anyone who's actually seen this in person.

While the sage considers, the terrified rage drake flees from the paladin with reckless abandon.

The rage drakes moves away from Torinn, provoking an opportunity attack.

The shaman and the warlock move to grab at the masks, and the warlock even manages to put one on. The drake hesitates briefly before lunging towards Reiyasu. Torinn places a divine challenge upon the drake grasping Reiyasu, slashes at the beast's scaly back--a glancing blow, but the drake roars aggressively and whirls to face the paladin--it felt that one. The paladin ends the short flight in front of the retreating rage drake, which comes to an abrupt halt and rears backwards.

As Ramuh picks up another mask and the human ranger hesitates, the intimidated and confused drake storms towards Myn, but does not attack--it seems to be responding to the mask in some way.

Torinn puts his divine challenge on rage drake 2 and then hit it with flyby attack for 20 damage. He flies Rutger in front of rage drake 1.

Noting Myn doesn't look any more cursed than usual, the shaman puts on the mask while using the Mage Hand from earlier to hand the unconscious Dragonwing's mask to Reiyasu.

"Stop attacking?" the shaman tries telling the drake.

If taking and putting on a mask only takes one hand, then I never needed to drop my Chieftain's Short Spear, so I guess I still have that.

With some quick conjuring of a magic hand, the shaman manages to pass off one of the dragon masks to Reiyasu after donning her own, and the human then places the mask upon his head. Myn idly places his goggles into his pack and pulls out his rod, trying to understand the enchantment upon the mask but lacking the time to do so.

The rage drake grasping Reiyasu seems confused. It releases its grip on the ranger and wanders aimlessly. It seems to take notice that Ramuh is not yet wearing a mask, and growls at him, but does not attack.

Arcana (Myn): The mask seems magical in nature.

Bernkastel uses her mage hand to hand the mask over to Reiyasu after equipping hers and Reiyasu equips his mask as well.
Myn, Bernkastel, and Reiyasu are wearing the dragon masks.
Rage Drake 2 ends its grab on Reiyasu.

With everything seemingly wrapped up here, Torinn takes off, saying, "I'm going to go find Valanor."

When Ramuh dons the mask, the rage drakes cease all hostility and simple mill about nervously. It seems like they're still a bit riled up from the combat, though they're not interested in attacking you any longer.

Torinn encounters Valanor flying back after flying a few hundred feet to the west. Valanor seems to be in good condition, though there is greenish blood on his claws and teeth--the blood seems to be eating at his flesh slightly, as if it was acidic, though the gold dragon doesn't seem to be bothered by it. Valanor maneuvers slightly, waggling his wings slightly to acknowledge Torinn's approach.

Combat has ended. Nature checks are necessary to prod the drakes to perform actions, and results affect how well they respond to directions. However, the DC is not very high due to using the masks. You also need to see to the unconscious cultists.

The shaman estimates the total value of all the coins and art objects in the two wagons to be between 6000-8000 gold pieces, but it would take a long time to count it all up. She also finds three spare sets of robes similar to the ones worn by the cultists, which are blood-stained and some of them even torn in the battle, and three additional dragon masks. She also finds a single item of wondrous power: a ritual candle.

Reiyasu seems to have the beasts more or less following his commands, though they don't look particularly eager about it. They snort and appear indifferent to the adventurers, and when Torinn and Valanor return, they snarl in their general direction.

Valanor lands a distance behind the western cart, and says, "The black dragon has been dealt with, my friends," He notes the masks have been stripped from the cultists, and the adventurers are now wearing them, and also nods towards the drakes. "And I see things turned out all right here as well?"

Myn gestures towards the owlbear, who clumsily pulls a dead cultist out of a robe and brings his equipment to the shaman. In the meantime, Myn attempts to decipher his mask's attributes.

Investigate mask when short rest starts.

Unless anyone disagrees, I'll start healing people this way, healing Valanor first for Healing Spirit. After two rests, I'll begin work on the drake harnesses, and then any damaged uniforms we need (all bloodstains will be cleaned up with Prestidigitation). After that, I'll do the third rest to recover Healing Spirit.

The robes worn by the cultists are lightly damaged and bloodstained, while the spare robes are in good condition. The robe the owlbear tore from the body of one of the dead cultist is in tatters.

The group takes a breather to recover their strength, being empowered by Bernkastel's battle standard. The drakes seem a bit off-put by Rutger and the warlock's owlbear, but don't seem inclined to attack due to Reiyasu's animal handling abilities. During the rest, Myn is able to determine that the dragon mask is a level 3 magical item that occupies the head slot, and that it has a single property: drakes, wyverns, and other dragon-like creatures have a friendly disposition towards you when you wear this mask. This is only their "default" disposition towards you, and it can change due to hostile actions or more powerful magic. As a result, certain creatures that normally cannot be trained or tamed can be. Only creatures up to level 15 are affected.

After a five-minute break, Myn begins to kick at one of the cultists that is struggling to regain consciousness. It straightens and briefly fights its bonds, then simply glares at the half-elf, sitting in the grass as the owlbear pecks idly at one of the dead cultists.

The owlbear drags the corpse next to the conscious cultist and promptly resumes pecking. Myn quietly stares at the captive through his mask, projecting an aura of harmful intent.

"I'd like you to answer some questions for us, if you wouldn't mind."

Ramuh: (Knowledge Check Results) Greenest is a sizable settlement in the Western Heartlands, noted for being the only city of substantial size along the Uldoon Trail, southwest of the Sunset Mountains and the Well of Dragons. It is not very far from your current location, roughly halfway between Cormyr and Baldur's Gate. Other than that, it has no reputation to speak of. It seems the people there live fairly simple lives in the Greenfields as ranchers and craftsmen. The city is fairly populous, however, and has a keep as well as substantial fortifications.

The name Frulam Mondath is unfamiliar to you.

"That name ring a bell with you, warlock?" Ramuh asks Myn.

Keeping one of the drakes close to him, Reiyasu joins the fun.

"That black dragon that was with your group. Yes, who was he? And why was he with you? Your cargo does not seem particularly important" he asks, playing with his quarterstaff with one of his hands.

"I don't know why the dragon accompanied us. It demanded to be called Eskanious," the cultist replies uneasily. "It did seem reluctant to accept the offer, but the higher-ups seem to have a rapport with the chromatic dragons. I am not privy to their negotiation process, but we were subject to its whims."

"Perhaps one of the cultists wearing one of the artifact masks managed to persuade it," Valanor adds, walking up behind the rest of the group.

"Frulam Mondath is a Wearer of Purple, and she ordered the attack on Greenest, with the aim of looting the city for valuables to add to the Dragon Queen's Hoard. She, along with Langdedrosa Cyanwrath and Rezmir the half-dragon, led the raid," the cultist replies, looking somewhat annoyed at the constant barrage of questions. "She is a wielder of magic, though I don't know if she crafted the items herself. The attack took place three days ago and we departed Greenest just yesterday. We were joined by Eskanious this morning."

Valanor looks somewhat troubled by this news.

"And where would this 'Wearer of Purple' thing be right now?"

The cultist shrugs. "She stayed behind when we left. I don't know if she's still there or not."

"Sir Valanor, do you know something of this Greenest place?" Reiyasu asks.

"Not except in passing, no. But the thought that the Cult of the Dragon would've looted this much plunder from such a small town... this isn't just the result of an infiltration," the disguised dragon explains, gesturing to the carts. "The operation must've been massive in scope."

"Your metallic is correct. Hundreds were there. And hundreds await you at the Well. Do you think to challenge us with this paltry group?" the cultist confirms.

Reiyasu finally takes a break, placing his quarterstaff inside of his magical bag and relax for a while in the ground, almost as if taking a short nap.

The party continues their breather, and the other unconscious cultist doesn't seem inclined to wake up without some prodding. The shaman begins the task of repairing the leather straps that bound the drakes after collecting the battle standard, and the interrogated cultist continues to regard the party with an icy glare. Valanor stands silently in the center of it all, seemingly satisfied with the proceedings.

"Do what you will! It does not matter in the end," the dragon cultist replies in a dismissive tone. "'The sun darkeneth with the Draakhorn's call. Ten eyes burn through the darkness, and flame consumeth all.' You fight a futile battle, and my death by your hand here and now or by dragonfire later as your prisoner makes no difference."

Reiyasu and Bernkastel aren't very convinced by this display. You suspect that the cultist does, in fact, fear death, but is putting on a good show of defiance. Yet there is an undercurrent of resignation and perhaps regret in his words, that perhaps he feels that in telling you this much, he has already doomed himself eventually.

"Well, you have heard him. I vote to send them back to Waterdeep, unless anyone here heavily disagrees" the ranger says, easily reading the cultist's fear.

"Who knows, this might help us to gain some points with the harpers" he adds.

After I finish repairing the harnesses and the robes but before the third short rest, I'll use Linked Portal with Speak with Spirits. Please roll for me when the ritual is cast; the roll should be 1d20+15+5.

The living cultists should "carry" the dead ones when they teleport. Before casting it, I'll write a note describing what the cultists told us and attach it to one of them.

- Make Whole costs 20% of the repaired item in alchemical reagents.
- I'm repairing two damaged robes: One owlbear-mangled plus the next most damaged one, and they cost 30 gp each (6 gold each to repair). I'll clean up the other two damaged robes with Prestidigitation and pass them off as spares.
- Maybe one robe can be made larger to fit Torinn in the process.
- Each cart's harness set is worth 1 gp each (2 sp each to repair).

Reiyasu will observe the shaman's work, and offer his assistance if possible.

Valanor replies, "Of course. I am certain the Harpers will be glad to have more prisoners who worked close to the Well, and will want to know more of what happened at Greenest." The gold dragon casts his eyes to the southwest, in the direction of the city, and says, "It is troubling that the cult has become so powerful so quickly. No doubt some of their gold is being allocated to hiring sellswords for support."

As the shaman repairs the robes, Valanor sends to Waterdeep in order to inform them of the arrival of the cultists. Ramuh's aid in assisting the golden dragon means this goes off without the possibility of a hitch, and afterwards the portal is opened for just a few brief seconds--a blue, shimmering gateway that the still-unconscious Dragonclaw and the unresistant Dragonwing are shoved through.

Finally, the robes are made to fit Torinn and the harnesses are repaired by the shaman's ritual magic.

I'd like to know the party's allocation in who is walking, who is riding carts, who's commanding the drakes, etc. And I will need some Nature checks (you may take 10) to convince the drakes to let you harness them and get them pulling the carts.

"Come on boys, it's time to keep going" Reiyasu says, guiding the drakes to the carts and securing them with the newly repaired harnesses.

Take ten in Nature. Also, I can take care of commanding the drakes. Myn was supposed to be our lead so he could ride the front caravan.

Torinn dons the robes he's been given and elects to ride on the carts. He also sends Rutger to wait in the Astral Sea for now, as a pegasus would be very suspicious here.

Valanor walks in the middle of the carts alongside Ramuh, and the other four ride in the carts. The drakes do not give Bernkastel or Reiyasu much trouble, but there is a feeling that they are just barely following orders, and would likely not respond well to being prodded into battle without more convincing.

The trip is largely uneventful until the party spots the Sunset Mountains on the horizon. At this point, Valanor stiffens and stops, saying, "I shouldn't get too close to the mountain. If I leave you while we are in sight of the mountain, it could raise suspicion." He looks to the sky, and sees the faint shapes of dragons circling the foremost mountain--the caldera containing the Well of Dragons. "And I cannot accompany you inside. The curse aside, they may have means for detecting and identifying disguised dragons--as I told you before, metallics and chromatics fought over this area for a long time before the Cult of the Dragon seized full control, so such precautions would be likely."

"Thank you, Mr Valanor" he says with a smile. But just before the dragon leaves, he asks him something else.

"If we were to need your assistance, as in, creating a diversion like the original plan. How might we let you know?"

"Any sort of signal is well. I will also fly cover should I notice any unusual activity from the cultists or the dragons circling overhead," the disguised dragon replies, nodding towards the forms of the distant chromatic dragons. "Alternately, you may use Sending should you have the time to contact me."

Valanor nods in response, and watches the adventurers continue down the path. The road leads to the west side of the mountain, and there aren't many other features of note here except a gradual slope to the plains surrounding the mountain as it joins. There is a circular cavern entrance in the mountainside, roughly twenty feet in diameter, and in front of it stands a wooden palisade with a guard tower.

Three humanoid figures are visible standing outside the palisade, and on the inside of the palisade, in the guard tower, are three more medium-sized humanoids. At ground level are two small drakes, accompanying the three humanoids--two appear medium-sized, but one is smaller, perhaps a gnome or halfling. Another is medium, but short in stature, probably a dwarf. One of the humanoids in the tower has a larger build, perhaps a goliath or dragonborn. You are still a few hundred feet out, but they have no doubt noticed your approach.

Bernkastel: (Insight) The cultists seem on guard, and are focused on doing their duty. They are not especially suspicious, but the general read of the situation you feel is that they are ready to go through the procedure.

As the group approaches the palisades, the cart with Reiyasu and Myn is the first to reach the wooden gate that blocks access to the lava tube leading into the side of the mountain itself. As you get close, one of the cultists--which you recognize as a cult dragonclaw, but a dwarf male this time--moves in front of your cart and holds up his hand. The drake stops moving, and the dwarf demands, "Aye, halt right thar 'til ahve got tha password froom ye, lad."

A human male and halfling female in the garb of cult dragonclaws also move around, with two smaller, green-skinned drakes in tow. These drakes seem very well-trained, not at all like the rage drakes, and closely accompany the dragonclawas as they move to look over your cargo from both sides, and move to begin a hands-on search.

The wooden tower is about thirty feet in front of you, but the base is behind the walls of the palisade, and atop it you notice a dragonborn male, a half-elf female, and a human female wearing the robes of cult dragonwings. They seem to be attentively observing the inspection.

Tha first o' tha incomin' haul? Things proceedin' as planned thar?"

Meanwhile, the halfling cultist and the human cultist each head to one of the wagons and being to rummage through the valuables.

Reiyasu remains silent, and lets Myn to handle with the talking.

The other two dragonclaws finish up their inspections, and give the dwarf cultist a signal. Nodding, he is then informed by the other two that the spare robes in the cart had suffered some light damage. "Encounter'd soome trouble 'long tha way, did ye? Say, weren't ye suppos'd ta get a dragon ta come wit ya for things like tha? Did it ever show?"

Bernkastel (Insight): He seems to be making a genuine inquiry. There is no trap that you can sense in his words. He is merely inquiring because it is his duty to do so, and to be suspicious in general.

"Aye, ah reckon a gold haul like tha's a tasty prize ta common bandits. Surprised tha mercenaries they 'ired doon'n Greenest didn't give ya more trouble over their share o' tha cut. Figures tha dragon bailed on ye like tha, Naergoth didn't think 'em too reliable either," the dwarf replies in an easy-going tone.

It's around this point that the dragonwing reemerges from the lava tube, flanked by two hulking dragonborn in purple-and-gold regalia. They carry enormous tower shields and thick-handled halberds, and wear helmets that resemble dragon skulls. "Arrite, tha honor guard's 'ere ta handle tha treasure. Yer gonna wanna head straight down tha tunnel an' dinnae take any turns until ye reach tha caldera. Once yer there, stay at the base level--don't try ta climb tha path leadin' up an' through tha center, tha higher-ups seem ta think there's somethin' nasty up there. But it doesn't come down, so just head ta the southwest tunnel out o' tha caldera. Once yer in tha tunnel, it's tha third room on yer right, ye can rest thar until they come ta give ye new orders."

Myn motions the group to proceed down the tub.

The group enters the lava tube, following Myn as the honor guard moves towards the two treasure carts. The lava tube is a hollowed circular tunnel into the mountain that houses the caldera of the Well of Dragons, and varies between fifteen to twenty-five feet in diameter. There is evidence to suggest that some effort has been recently made to widen the tunnel, as there are piles of loose rock on the sides of the tunnel.

The lighting herein is dim, and those without low-light vision cannot see very well. Torches and lamps hang from metal rungs hammered into the side of the tunnels at wide intervals, ranging from forty to fifty feet apart. The air is still and quiet, and you progress through the tunnel roughly four hundred feet to the east before the tunnel turns sharply to the south. Almost immediately after this southern turn, it splits into a path that continues to the south, and another heading further east.

"Any clever plan?" the ranger asks, honestly bewildered.

"We may as well head to the area the dwarf indicated and see what we can learn."

Trying to stay quiet, Reiyasu nods at Myn suggestion instead of adding more to the discussion.

Ramuh looks thoughtful for a moment, then shrugs. "Follow 'orders' it is."

As the party progresses further south down the tunnel, they pass another branching path to the west. It leads southwest about sixty feet and ends in a large, gilded door inscribed with a great many runes and what appear to be magic gemstones. Standing in the center of the door is a cultist wearing an elaborate mask similar to that worn by the cult manipulator back in Halvangh's tower, and he is flanked by two horrid constructs comprised of stitched-together dead flesh. These flesh golems look rather menacing and watch you as you pass, as if daring you to approach the elaborate door.

About two hundred feet further southeast down the wining passage, the lava tube opens into a massive, imposing chamber. The dim lighting has given way to open air, and the shining sun provides plenty of illumination here in the dead caldera. The ground is an uneven, black rock that is no doubt a cooled magma pool, and there are many dips and rises that cover the plane. In the center of the caldera is an enormous stone spire, hundreds of feet tall, jutting up and towards the sky. The spire is quite the sight to behold, as an enormous, serpentine form perhaps sixty feet in diameter coils around the whole of the spire. You cannot see a head or tail to this form, but it appears to coil up the spire for hundreds of feet up, perhaps all the way to the top, which is impossible to view from your current vantage. The path you could use to head upwards coils behind the spire and disappears, perhaps going into the spire or leading to a dead end--you can't tell from your current position.

In addition to this enormous, coiling form--which seems to be comprised of petrified flesh--dragon bones litter the caldera at random locations. They are along the path heading upwards, jutting out of the ground and the stone spire, and cluttered in piles that form makeshift paths through the uneven ground that forms the floor of the caldera. The dwarf instructed you to head to the south from here, and about four hundred feet to the south, you can see a raised path clinging to the side of the stone spire which leads into another lava tube. The lava tube is set into the stone spire rather than the caldera wall, but it's clearly where you were instructed to enter.

This petrified body seems to make the bones of the countless dragons that died here seem insignificant in comparison, and whatever it is, it seems to be coiling around whatever lies at the center of the Well of Dragons.

"I know we are following the dwarf orders" Reiyasu whispers, "but that spire seems rather remarkable. Don't you agree?"

Upon looking up at the gigantic coiling form around the stone spire, those party members that examine it closely notice something a bit odd. There's something small and yellow atop a portion of the serpent's coil, near the ramp leading upwards. It stands out quite a bit because of the bright color, and fixing your gaze upon that spot reveals that somehow, a canary has made its way inside the spire and is resting atop the petrified serpent monster.

Torinn points out the canary and quietly adds, "I believe that this is the correct way to go for now."

"The owlbear could use a snack."

"I have no objection."

The caldera is brightly lit, so you have no problem navigating your way up the ramp to the southwest, circling around the enormous stone spire. As you approach the area where the canary is perched upon the serpentine monstrosity, it takes wing, flying up towards the top of the spire. It looks like it is heading towards the very top when you lose sight of it.

Getting a closer look at the coiling form around this spire, you can see clearly that the exterior is comprised of layered scales. They look nearly impenetrable, though in their current, petrified form, they are only a dull brown color and have lost whatever sheen they might have possessed in life. The feeling you get is definitely that this is an enormous creature that is dead, and for whatever reason, its remains have been preserved rather than left to decay. It's not like taxidermy, as the remains have clearly suffered somewhat from being exposed to the elements--some of the scales have dulled around the edges or have small fragments missing.

And even though it seems to possess no threat to you by all logical appearances, you can't help but feel some great power softly emanate from the creature's enormous form. You have no idea how big it is, but it you were to guess, it was several hundred feet from head to tail, though you have seen no sign of either--only its coiling body.

As for the path itself, it is fairly wide, about sixty feet across, and it slowly ramps upwards as it bends around the back of the spire from your previous perspective. Following it around the corner, you can see that it leads into a large hole in the back of the stone spire (relative to where you entered), but the interior of the spire is dark, and due to the position of the sun, the spire itself, and the lip of the caldera, light is not shining very far inside. Thus, you cannot see into the interior of the spire, but the path you are currently following seems to go inside, continuing to gradually ramp upward as well.

Reiyasu: This is not a natural creature. You know very little about it, but you know that much for certain. The best you can guess is that this creature might have power OVER nature, but it is not natural. You'd go as far as to say it is not of this world.

Myn: This creature emanates a power that is difficult to describe. It's not so much that you haven't encountered something like this before, but not on this scale, and it's intertwined with other forms of power. It's as if you're looking at two, three, or more different things when you try to comprehend the nature of the dormant power sleeping within its petrified form.

As for the nature of the creature itself, what you can tell is that it's definitely very much like a dragon, though its shape is different than what you would traditionally call a dragon, obviously. Perhaps if you could see its head, you could tell more, because you've never seen anything quite like this before, nor heard of anything like it described.

It is not currently a threat, but you would guess that it is not permanently dead. Its power lies dormant, it has not been extinguished. Your guess is that it has somehow been forced into an alternate state of consciousness: the creature sleeps, but it is not dead. Still, you would also guess that it could not be stirred from its slumber--not without access to magic of some unfathomable power.

The shaman reaveals that, as far as you can see, the interior of this spire is hollow, with the exception of the ground upon which you stand. There is no ceiling visible for the twenty-five feet above you the torch illuminates. The utter emptiness of this enormous chamber is slightly chilling, and it'd be very easy to get turned around or lost within it, given how large it looks from the outside (about four hundred and forty feet in diameter, though the diameter is somewhat irregular). You can tell that the floor slopes gradually upwards, much like the path in the cavern wall that brought you in here.

You can't see an exit from your current vantage, just darkness beyond the edge of your light source. However, the path seems to slope upwards towards the north and east, so if your goal is to go upward, that would most likely be the way you wish to go.

"Let's make haste, we have been blessed with a low profile security so far" the ranger remarks, as he moves with the group.

As the group heads upwards and to the north and east, they manage to keep their bearings and are startled to find little of note in the interior of the spire. The terrain here is rough and uneven, and dragon bones seem embedded in the ground, but it does not seem like it was formed naturally from magma flows like the rest of the caldera. It was constructed, somehow, perhaps via a powerful stone-shaping ritual of some sort. However, it comes across as incomplete and barely half-formed, given its completely hollow nature and strange, convenient structure where the floor meets the passage leading inward.

Eventually, in the distance, you spot portion of the wall that is broken through. It was difficult to spot because the sun was not shining directly through it, but looking up you do spot several other portions of the spire where there are holes broken through the sides of it where sunlight manages to pierce into the darkness for varying distances, usually ending as it hits another wall. In any case, as you approach the section of the wall that is broken through, you notice that there is no more path to follow--until you spot a yellow canary that flies out of it, then skims the back of the enormous petrified serpent, which lies directly outside the hole in the side of the spire. Following it out and onto the enormous creature's back, you are able to continue your passage upward.

Working your way through the strange spire is confusing and decidedly odd--eventually there is simply no more floor to traverse and you have to move across the petrified serpent's back once more for a great distance, following yellow canaries until finally you re-enter into a small chamber near the top of the spire, some few hundred feet above the caldera's ground level. A steep ramp upwards deposits you atop the spire, and here things are strange indeed.

Stalagmite-like rock formations litter the edge of the spire--it would be quite a drop should you fall off, so it's probably a good idea to not hang around too close to the edge. There are dragon bones littering the floor, including several whole dragon skeletons. The bones and the rock formations form a twisting mess around a circular stone platform on the center of the spire's top. This platform stands out because the stone is of a different color than the dull brown of the surrounding cavern floor, it is a light gray and has a polished look to it. It raises roughly thirty feet above the ground, with a small, rocky ramp that appears to be a defaced portion of the stone platform forming a ramp that could be used to easily ascend it.

By far the most striking feature here is the enormous head of the petrified serpent, and two massive wings clinging to its body about two hundred feet away from the head, hugging the sides of the spire-top. The head is perched above the stone platform, and for lack of a better descriptive term, it is very dragon-like. Its mouth hangs open, as if frozen mid-roar, but it is clearly not alive. Or not animate, at any rate. Given its position hovering over the platform, it's almost as if this is some place to commune with the great serpent--if it were a living thing.

Also on the platform are two more oddities--they appear to be the corpses of two fell dragons. And four of you recognize these dragons; they look very similar to the two dragons that you fought in the Fell King's throne room, though those two dragons almost completely disintegrated after you defeated them, so how they could still be here is a mystery to you. They are also very clearly dead and unmoving. Perched atop the platform on the opposite side from your current position is a yellow canary, which chirps at you briefly, then flies up and over the head of the enormous serpent.

"This is truly something..." the ranger says, wearing a content smile. "Was this training of yours really that important, son?" he mutters to himself.

Reiyasu: (Nature) All you can tell about this creature is that it is not of the natural world in any way, shape, or form. Everything about it screams "unnatural" to you. You confirm that while it may share some similarities with dragons, it is not a mere mortal dragon; for dragons, while somewhat magical and majestic, are natural creatures. This is not a natural creature, it is not of Toril.

(Perception) Your eyes manage to closely track the canary as it flies away. As it crests over the petrified head of the dormant monstrosity, it seems to vanish. You should have been able to see it land or continue flying away with your incredibly keen senses, but instead it seems to have vanished into thin air.

Bernkastel (Perception) Aside from obvious features described before, you do not see anything else out of the ordinary.

"'An alien snake' is a most unflattering description," Ramuh interjects. "It is... hard to describe. There is a lot of power lying dormant in this creature, but it is as gazing at three different paintings and trying to describe them as one.

"It isn't awake, though. At least, not yet. For now, I don't believe there's much reason to fear. It is a dragon, and yet it is unlike a dragon."

Piecing together what they know, the party is able to combine the obvious facts about this creature, such as it being enormous and dragon-like, with the not-so-obvious, such as the sleeping power you can sense within it, to form certain conclusions. An enormous, ancient, and powerful dragon-like creature brings a few ancient legends to mind--and the unnatural sense that some of you have of it suggests that perhaps it is of another world... such as Abeir. The power you sense could be that of a primordial, one of extraordinary power, and dragon-like in appearance... one that is now dormant.

Seeing as everyone's calling the snake weird, the shaman trains her spirit senses on the creature for hints.

Reiyasu was never an avid reader, but he tries to recall if he ever heard a story about a very long snake/dragon. Maybe he knew once of a story like that, something he used to scare and send to bed early his badly behaved son.

History (Group): There is a legend of a primordial that took the form of a dragon, a primordial that cast down Toril-Abeir's ice moon in an event called the Tearfall, creating the Sea of Fallen Stars. This event eventually led to the creation of the twin realms of Abeir and Toril. This tale is told primarily among dragons, who hail Asgorath as "the World-Shaper", the creator of the universe itself. Some legends refer to Asgorath as male, some as female--some as evil, some as good. Some as a greater god, some as a primordial. It is not known which of these things Asgorath truly is, for it has not been known to interfere with the realms in any way since the Tearfall, though Torinn has heard rumors among his people that the dragons say that Asgorath was active on Abeir in the final days before the onset of the Spellplague.

Once the discussion is over, and the group identifies the legendary creature, Reiyasu adds "The world-shaper... yes I might have heard of that once."

"Why do you think Bahamut lead us to this place, Mr. Torinn? Could this be related to the Fell King?"

Torinn relates what little he knows.

"Well, at this point I'd say our infiltration was a success" the ranger says, as he removes the cultist's clothes and mask and places it inside of the magic bag.

Then, he approaches the massive dragon head, and if nothing seems to be immediately dangerous, he climbs on it and looks around the place where the canary vanished.

Remove silly clothes, equip casque of tactics. Take ten on Athletics.
