After a few hours of effort, Sariel finishes the party's enchantments. It is now late, and time to retire for the evening.

After a refreshing rest, the party assembles near the Arcanimus over a period of time, to find two familiar figures standing outside--though two you've not seen together before. Letharst the tiefling has spotted you and is approaching eagerly, and trailing lazily behind him is the bald, scarred orcish warlord in studded leather, with a hefty, wicked-looking greatsword hefted over his shoulder, Kraag Bloodspire.

"Friends, friends, hello!" Letharst announces, moving forward and stopping about ten feet from the gathered adventurers. He grins at you, though keeps his distance, as if a bit hesitant. "The grand duke has requested you come to the palace as soon as you are able. Best to get going, yes?"

"A comrade, huh?" Sariel frowns dubiously, and sighs deeply.

"I suppose it'll be another one of your ilk," she mumbles softly to no one in particular. "Well, either way, I've a partner of my own I'd like to bring along. Let's fetch yours first, though."

Without further ado, Sariel marches up to Letharst. "Well then, lead the way."

Letharst eagerly leads the group back to the palace, where they are quickly admitted to Prestor's audience chamber.

Inside, everything appears at normal, though today the guard captain Highwind is accompanying the duke. The captain nods at your approach, but it is the duke that addresses you, accompanied by one of his signature, lazy-looking hand gestures, "Ah good. From what I've heard in regards to the Arcanimus, all the preparations are ready for your departure. So I thought it best to brief you on the situation."

Prestor stands from his chair, and though his posture is somewhat relaxed, his gaze remains even and serious as he speaks, "In regards to Michael's mission, I have arranged for some assistance for your group. Someone of your caliber is not easy to find, but in what is perhaps a stroke of luck, we were able to find someone. A martial artists of some ill reputation was apprehended in Baldur's Gate in connection to some reports from our far Eastern allies. They regard this man as dangerous. However..." The duke gestures dramatically, closing his fist and raising it in front of him, "The truth of the matter is, we have very infrequent contact with the east. I had Letharst do some digging, and by all accounts, this man is not the one they should be chasing. Nevertheless, the far east is not easy to negotiate with. I am under obligation to turn over this man to them, but I thought that he would be better served by having a chance to redeem his name. And if there ever was a chance for such, this is it."

The grand duke relaxes his hand and nods at the group, saying further, "Even on this issue, share with the martial artist what you wish. I am certain that his skills will be of assistance to you. Feel free to tell him the full extent of what you know."

"Michael Silversteel," the duke comments, fixing his gaze on the warlord. "If you don't mind, I have arranged for Gourmert Goldsmith to accompany you back on your journey to East Rift. He may be of some help to you in explaining our situation, and an official diplomat will add weight to your message of the urgency."

"Then, if there's nothing else. Captain Highwind, retrieve Folka, and tell him that it's time," Prestor announces. The armored dragonborn nods, and exits the room through one of the side chambers. "Michael, please stay remain here. I'll call for Gourmert shortly."

The other five besides the warlord depart the chamber, and after a few moments, captain Highwind returns with four other royal guards (armored similarly to the ones you saw before, in the city), and a muscular-looking human male. He bears a cross-shaped scar on his cheek, and wears a red cloak over his upper body, plus a jacket, shirt, and pants (see: https://archive.seacats.net/limbo/src/131846668923.gif).

Captain Highwind grunts, then explains, "These are the adventurers we told you about. They've proven to be extremely capable warriors up to this point, so I think you'll get along find." Captain Highwind nods a bit, and looks the monk over, then the others, and goes on a bit, "You know, I'm also a student of the fighting styles of the far east. We believe someone called "The Fell King" is trying to start a war between the Many arrows and the other nations. Our job is to aid the Duke to avoid that.
We are trying right now to find where in the Shadowfell this guy is hiding, and to do that we got the help of sir Halvang we might achieve that using some pre-spellplage magic.
For that our current mision is to find the strongest point of a certain leyline and to cast a ritual once we find it.

Back at the Arcanimus, Sariel encounters Mardoc, Elayne, Urist, and Halvangh on the ground floor, an unusual sight. They are gathered around a smaller table, which is surprisingly clear of maps, books, or anything else. They were apparently engaged in some sort of discussion before you arrived, but now their gazes are fixed upon you. The high shaman Mardoc is the first to speak, "'Ey. You're here early, 's the rest of the group coming over soon?"

Back at the palace, Kraag shakes his head whimsically, grinning and holding his hefty weapon over his shoulder. "Still, wish I was going down there, undead evil dragons or not. I'm not fit for this diplomatic escort stuff."

"All right, Kraag, that's enough," Letharst urges, sliding up next to the warlord. "We wouldn't want to keep the duke waiting, yes? You have an appointment, so let us go, yes!" The orc maintains his grin but shifts it to the tiefling and nods, and the two walk off.

It seems there's little else to do but for the party to head back and prepare to depart for Koganusân.

"Urist and Havlangh were telling us about some of the various legends surrounding Koganusân. Contact was lost before the Spellplague, apparently," Elayne chimes in.

"'Twas once a prosperous mining outpost, an' it withstood many dangerous encounters wit' goblin raiding parties an' dangerous wildlife 'fore contact was suddenly cut off," Urist explains. "Apparently tha place had a bad reputation wit' tha nobles, though, an' no reclamation effort was e'er made."

"Some say..." responds Halvangh hesitantly, "That the dwarves there dug too greedily, and too deep... the fortress certainly did not fall to attacks from without. It was an impregnable stronghold. But even in the ages before the Spellplague, there were far worse things lurking in the deep places of the world."

Urist regards the dragon a bit dubiously, "Ye think they were overrun by the denizens of the Underdark?"

"That, or worse," Halvangh remarks regretfully.

By this time, the other five adventurers have made their way to the Arcanimus, apparently uninterested in the orcish warlord that somehow managed to find its way into the palace and may have had a connection to the outrider they fought before. At their arrival, Elayne nods and greets them, "Welcome. We have everything prepared for your departure, if you are ready."

"Ah, before that." Sariel pauses, gives a look at everyone else. Then, with a firm nod, she proceeds towards the table she had often sat at before, when she'd removed herself from the party for a time to study.

Sariel ducks and looks under the empty.

"Hey. Roth," the Eladrin mumbles in Elven, tracing a sigil in the air. It glimmers briefly, and a soft purr is emitted as her trusty black cat returns to its master.

... though, it's several times larger than when the party's last seen it, and has two large wispy tentacles portruding from its shoulder blades.

Satisfied with Roth's reappearance, Sariel returns to the rest of the party, the creature in tow.

"And now," the eladrin continues, still in Elven, "I am ready."

"H-hmm..." Torinn muses, trying to contain his surprise at Sariel summoning... Something. Is that a cat? With tentacles coming out of its back? "I guess I should make ready, then."

Giving no further explanation, Torinn whistles. A cloud of mist forms a few feet away, signaling the approach of his noble steed. What emerges from the mist, however, could hardly be mistaken for a horse. Out leaps an armored tiger, which quietly pads next to Torinn and settles down obediently. The cavalier scrutinizes his new mount for several seconds before concluding, "I think that's Rutger. Interesting."

Elayne quickly has the adventurers and their summoned animals moved to a side room. This room is large, but with a low ceiling, and is otherwise in the same style as the rest of the Arcanimus. Urist follows, though Halvangh and Mardoc remain where they are. Once the group has assembled inside, Elayne indicates the stepping disk on the far side of the chamber, encircled by arcane markings. A familiar looking gnome is standing nearby, holding several scrolls and rather absorbed in fiddling with a small, gray, rectangular metal device in his hands.

"Sid," Elayne commands the gnome's attention, "Is everything prepared?"

Sid looks up, apparently startled at first, but then starts to grin and nods eagerly, saying, "Oh yes, yes! My Leyline Tracer X-Traordinare is fully functioning and ready for its test run!" He holds out the hand-sized metallic device to show you. It folds slightly, and there is a small, clear, glass-like screen which is currently devoid of any sort of indicator, therefore showing the gray metal behind it, and a circular red button just below the screen. "Very easy to operate. Press the button with the leyline in range, and an arrow will appear on the glass, pointing you in the direction of the strongest point. The arrow starts out blue in color, but will turn red when you're close enough to the leyline to cast the ritual!" Still holding out the device, Sid reaches for the scrolls he is holding, and drops two onto the floor before producing a third, which he holds out alongside the device. "Here's your scroll, too!"

Meanwhile, Urist has wandered over to the stepping disk, and beings idly comparing the magical circles to drawings in his spellbook. He nods satisfactorily as Sid wraps up his speech, and comments, "Looks good o'er 'ere."

One by one, the adventurers step onto the disk and are whisked away to a place far, far away. Elayne explains one last detail as you leave, "It will take a few hours to power up the stepping disk for your return trip. Please use that time to find the leyline!"

Once you gather your bearings, you become aware of exactly what your surroundings are. Luckily, there is a small brazier providing a bit of illumination inside this pitch-black cavern, though it appears that this is not the case for the way ahead. You appear to be in a tunnel of sorts, though it doesn't appear to be completely natural. It's as if it was dug out by a large team of skilled miners, and then later portions of it collapsed later on. The ceiling is quite high, about 30 feet up. You can spot a hole near the top of your location, the edges of which look roughly dug and slightly slimy. The hole itself is about 20 feet up the wall.

In your immediate view, there are a few barrels stacked against the northern wall, and a couple of broken barrels on the ground. The wood is moldy and rotten. Along the southern wall is a rusty iron anvil, next to a haphazard pile of various debris. The debris appears to mostly be comprised of animal matter and fungi, and the smell is quite bad.

The only immediate path ahead is to the east, though you could try the hole if you want to climb into a smelly, slimy hole 20 feet off the ground.

The sunrod illuminates more of the path ahead. There appear to be two more holds similar to the one nearby, high up along the walls. In addition, there is another pile of debris a bit further ahead, though this one appears to be comprised primarily of pieces of carved stone and wooden furniture. It's all heavily decayed and rotting, and moss covers much of the stone. To the south and east, there is a rather incomplete skeleton of some creature embedded into the wall. At a glance, it appears to be a horse, mule, or donkey skeleton, though it's impossible to know for sure.

The humidity here is very noticeable, and the cavern walls and floor are very slightly damp.

Dungeoneering may tell you a bit more about the holes.

Nodding to Sureiya, the semi-warlord in training suggests a basic formation, recalling that monks can move rapidly across a battlefield. "Mr. Torinn, please lead with Mr. Sureiya, and Mr. Folka should take up the rear guard to watch for enemies."

Hold Chieftain's Short Spear. I'll keep the spirit companion next to Sureiya, and also adjacent to at least one more ally whenever possible.

After adjusting to a new formation, the adventurers proceed a bit further into the cavern. Around the bend, there is a much larger pile of refuse, mixed of both rotting animal matter and bits of decaying wood, rusty metal scraps, and very worn clothing. There are even a few bones sticking out of the pile, and by a glance, they are dwarven and quite ancient.

Past the disgusting pile is a lot of muddy ground. It seems the area's moisture is progressively increasing. Beyond the muddy ground is a much more open area, slightly closed off by rocky formations but still accessible. There's a lot of moss covering the ground here, and to the west you see some stalagmites on the ground. The stalagmites are difficult terrain, and if you fall prone on a stalagmite you take 1d10 damage.

The whole area smells awful, like mold and swamp water.

When Torinn begins to make his way between the stone pillars, he hears the sound of grunting and metal-on-metal, like a group of something shuffling about and readying weapons.

In a flash, a aqua-skinned, crocodile-like reptilian humanoid darts past the adventures' field of vision, heading east. The adventurers only manage a brief look, but it appeared to be wearing little more than a brown leather loincloth and some tattered shoulder covering, yet sported a pair of large, dangerous-looking claws.

The half-orc is the first to react to this danger. Vision was a little messed up due to lazy vision-blocking on my part before, so it's now "fixed."

Bernkastel: (Nature) "Bernkastel" thinks that this is a troglodyte--perhaps the most loathsome and universally despised humanoid. Making their homes in the Underdark and other such subterranean hovels, troglodytes live in filth and are notorious for their unbearable stench. They possess just enough intelligence to make use of tools, armor, and weaponry, and they can speak draconic; but they are even more animalistic and savage than lizardfolk and gnolls.
Troglodytes almost never have a structured society, instead living in small tribes of about 30 members, which have few goals other than to hunt and kill. Even the other humanoids of the Underdark have determined that reasoning with a troglodyte is impossible, and at best they are enslaved by more powerful masters. The only unifying force amongst troglodytes is their worship of the evil and savage Torog or other dark entities, and what little they do not consume from their kills is tortured and sacrificed to these gods, which universally revel in agony and slaughter.
This particular troglodyte is a troglodyte thrasher, a level 7 brute. It has no particular vulnerabilities or weaknesses, though it does possess darkvision.

Sureiya dashes forward, and slices at the air where the troglodyte should be standing, but it easily evades the blow. In an instant, the half-orc finds himself overwhelmed by the creature's unbearable odor, and is unable to concentrate on attacking effectively.

In the distance, to the northwest, Sureiya spots a scrawny-looking troglodyte wielding a spiked club. Smaller and thinner than the thrasher, it nevertheless looks quite lithe and quick, and could be dangerous with that club.

Sureiya's marauder's rush misses the troglodyte thrasher.

The spell didn't seem effective. As if on cue, four more of the spiked club-wielding troglodytes, wearing a rather ragged set of leather scrap clothing, emerge from the darkness to the west and descend on Sureiya, beating him savagely with their clubs as they slink past the half-orc and attempt to swarm him.

Bernkastel haphazardly moves forward, but her sunrod reveals a great deal of the map for all to see.

Much of the ground is covered in shallow pools and moss, and the whole area smells bad, though not nearly as bad as the troglodytes themselves.

In the middle of what looks like a campsite to the northwest (though the fire is not burning at the moment) is another hulking, clawed troglodyte, and nearby are two average-looking troglodytes carrying crude javelins. They shield themselves from the sudden light and hiss loudly.

Bernkastel runs, taking a -5 penalty to attacks and granting combat advantage until the start of her next turn.

Myn strides forward and calls down a blazing meteor upon the group of reptilians, but with amazing speed and self-awareness, the agile troglodtyes scamper out of the way, just avoiding being blasted into oblivion.

Myn uses blazing starfall.
This triggers the troglodtye grunts' scatter, which allows them to shift 2 squares out of the area of a burst or blast as an immediate interrupt.
As a result, blazing starfall doesn't hit anything.

Bernkastel (Nature): The troglodyte impalers are level 7 artillery. Though they have been known to stab at enemies that enter melee combat with them, they prefer to engage at long range, hurling their javelins for a fair amount of damage (they have a ranged attack with higher accuracy and damage than the melee attack). Occasionally, they throw their javelins with such force that it impales the target, greatly hampering the target's ability to fight (impaling shot, a recharge power, has the same attack and damage as the regular ranged attack, but the target is restrained [save ends]). Like the other troglodtyes, they possess the troglodyte stench aura and darkvision.

Muttering to himself ever since they entered this place, about how it seems to be cursed and that the smell isn't helping much, Folka perks up and charges into action once the fighting begins. He tries to attack the nearest troglodyte hoping to catch his nearby ally in the attack, shouting,"Take this! Spiral Knuckle!", but unfortunately misses, blaming it on the stench and feeling of this place.

Torinn orders Rutger to circle around the action, looking for a good place to position himself. Singling out the nearby thrasher, he commands, "Rutger, tear into him!" His mount springs forward, but perhaps it's not used to its new form, as its attack falls short of its mark. Not to be discouraged, he rears back, growling, "Take this, you blasphemous cravens!" before he bathes his enemies in crackling bolts of lightning. The survivors are put under his vengeful vigilance.

Torinn swiftly rides across the battlefield, and Rutger pounces into action with a snarl, causing the nearby troglodtyes to quickly dodge its pounce. The undeterred dragonborn lets loose a breath of lightning, which shocks one of the grunts until it stops moving. Another grunt manages to dodge, though the nearby thrasher is hit as well, though easily shrugs off the damage. The two are still placed under the paladin's sanction, however.

Spying an easy target, the impalers advance, one loosing a javelin which nearly impales the half-orc cleanly through, though Torinn's righteous shield manages to divert the blow just so that it only pierces Sureiya's clothing, leaving him awkwardly pinned down. The other impaler sees the battle tiger as the largest threat, and manages to launch a javelin which pierces one of Rutger's arms, leaving the large cat unable to freely move.

The large brutish trog turns its claws on Sureiya, slashing viciously at the inconvenienced ranger, tearing vicious wounds in his flesh. However, the reptilian's vicious bite only manages to chomp on the upper part of the javelin still holding Sureiya down. The rest of the grunts seem confused, and one feebly tries to attack Torinn but can't even come close to overcoming the plate armor, while another moves about, unable to do much else while placed under the divine sanction. The final grunt works its way north before charging down Roth, but the smaller cat manages to nimbly evade the blow. The trog lets the momentum carry him into the adventurers' back ranks.

It is at this point that the back ranks of the adventurers hear a scuttling sound coming up behind them. They turn to see a large, green, caterpiller-like creature with a gaping, toothy maw and a great many tentacles twitching around its mouth like whiskers gliding along the western wall with great speed. It appears you've attracted the attention of a carrion crawler...

The half-orc is in a bad way.

Torinn and Rutger move. Rutger's battle pounce misses the troglodyte thrasher.
Torinn's dragon breath hits thrasher 2 for 4 lightning damage, kills grunt 5 and misses grunt 7. Grunt 7 and the thrasher are subject to Torinn's divine sanction.
Mature carrion crawler double moves.
Troglodyte impaler 1 moves, then uses impaling shot, hitting Sureiya for 20 damage and Sureiya is restrained (save ends). Torinn uses righteous shield to take the damage in Sureiya's place, and Torinn gains a +2 power bonus to attack rolls until the end of his next turn.
Troglodyte impaler 2 moves, then hits Rutger with impaling shot for 17 damage (reduced to 12), and Rutger is restrained (save ends).
Troglodyte thrasher 1 uses tooth and claw for two attacks on Sureiya. Sureiya attempts to interrupt with disruptive strike but misses. The first attack hits for 13 damage and the second one misses.
Troglodyte grunt 6's club misses Torinn.
Troglodtye grunt 7 double moves.
Troglodyte grunt 8 moves, then charges Roth but misses with club. It shifts 2 squares.

Dungeoneeering (Sureiya): Carrion crawlers are vicious aberrant carrion-feeders from the Far Realm. They dwell in moist caverns and other subterranean environments, looking for prey where other carrion feeders are scarce. They tend to avoid contact with other dangerous competitors by running on the walls and ceilings. Carrion crawlers will often follow sources of light from a distance, and wait for the scent of blood to rush to battle, in an attempt to secure a meal for itself. Once prey is spotted, they tend to attack with their tentacles and are capable of attacking at a range, with multiple tentacles at once (tentacle can target 1 or 2 creatures and has reach 2). Their tentacles carry a deadly poison (tentacle targets Fortitude, and inflicts ongoing poison damage and slows, save ends). As the poison spreads throughout the body, the victims' movement becomes more and more impaired until it halts completely (the first failed save switches the slow with immobilize, and the second failed save stuns). This carrion crawler is a mature carrion crawler, and thus is quite adept at controlling the area around it--it pulls enemies close in with its tentacles, and will bite an enemy that attempts escape. Even enemies at the edge of the reach of the tentacles are far from safe (tentacle pulls the target 1 square on a hit, and the carrion crawler can bite an enemy that willingly leaves an adjacent square, bite deals more damage than tentacle but does not carry poison, and the crawler possesses threatening reach, allowing it to make opportunity attacks with tentacle against enemies 2 squares away). This mature carrion crawler is a level 7 elite soldier. It can climb on the walls, as you've seen, and it possesses darkvision. While younger carrion crawlers typically wait for their prey to decay naturally, mature carrion crawlers can regurgitate a particularly strong stomach acid on grouped foes, and wounding the crawler will often provoke this reaction (the carrion crawler has a recharge when first bloodied power, regurgitate, which targets Reflex in a close blast 5 and deals acid damage and imposes a penalty to AC and Reflex, save ends).

Sureiya's saving throw succeeds.

A sharp wave of the shaman's spear conjures a transient figure of a sturdy iron archon. The elemental spirit proceeds to infuse Sureiya, which enables the ranger to take advantage of the troglodyte's opening with a sword strike of his own and prepares him for the enemy's blow.

Immediate interrupt: Powerful Warning, Sureiya vs. Grunt 2. +2 to defenses vs. the attack, and Sureiya makes a MBA with a +1 bonus to attack against Grunt 2. It seems like the MBA happens before the grunt's attack, too.

With the war spirit's cunning infused into him, Sureiya manages to cut down one of the grunts before he can be attacked.

Bernkastel's powerful warning allows Sureiya to make a melee basic attack against troglodtye grunt 2, which hits and kills it http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3272624/
Sureiya is bloodied, and gains 5 temporary hit points from half-orc resilience.

Notes
Stalagmites are difficult terrain, and if you fall prone in a square with a stalagmite you take 1d10+3 damage.
All troglodytes posses troglodyte stench, which imposes a -2 attack roll penalty in an aura 1.
The knowledge check for the carrion crawler is dungeoneering.
