First Round: First Two Bodies
Krauss found in Jessica's room and Reinon found in the flooded boiler room.

Your move.

Reinon's death is no mystery. For some reason or another, she followed similar steps as I did in the third round and ended up in Jessica's room. There, someone attacked her and tied her up in the basement. Of course, it's possible that someone else caused the basement to flood.

As for the closed room, Reinon could have locked the door before she was attacked.

The key that Archer grabbed wasn't the genuine key to Jessica's room! When Genji bent down to get a "better look" at the key, he swapped it with the real one, Indiana Jones style!

Sadly, There is only one key to Jessica's room. The key Archer found was indeed said key.

Anyone could have used the key Archer found to lock the door. Someone locked the door then put it on her person.

After the servant room was locked at midnight, the boiler room key wasn't used until the flood was discovered in the morning. Sanon gave a nice long speech about this later in the round. In addition even after they unlocked the door Archer had to help Genji and Rudolf remove debris from in front of the door which would have stopped people from entering the boiler room.

So what? The boiler room key was never "used" at all. Archer never saw the room locked and Kinjo managed to enter the boiler room late at night without the use of a key! The key that Archer saw in the door was just for show.

The door was indeed locked, in fact Genji unlocked the door as Archer was heading down the staircase, literally seconds before finding Rudolf and Genji trying to enter the room.

Someone locked Reinon in the basement before midnight while the room slowly filled up with water. They then placed the key in the servant's room before it was seen.

If you recall Sanon was in the servant room for the majority of the night. Her account of the matter goes against your theory completely, after all Sanon did not lie in her testimony.

During the two minutes that Sanon was absent from the servant's room, someone entered and took the key. This wasn't heard because the door was never closed after, as suggested by Rudolf during his round.

Sanon mistook the other boiler room key for the one to the mansion, when in fact it had been switched during the 2 minute period. It was then put back after the servant room was opened in the morning to make look as if it was never moved.

Second Round: First Body
Krauss, once again found in Jessica's room.

Who would ever expect a mystery where you have to solve the same person's death twice? In any case, your move.

Genji planted the key after he broke into the room through the window.

Let's get the obvious moves out of the way.

The key was not planted into the room after breaking in.

The culprit left through the window, and closed it behind them. If Genji can jump from the balcony to the window, it stands to reason that the opposite is also possible. Genji then locked the window used when he entered.

While Genji had everyone distracted, someone unlocked the door to Jessica's room and placed the key inside. They left before Genji could enter the room.

The key was already in the room when the player woke up. It wasn't moved until they found it in the room.

Jessica's room remained unlocked throughout the night, until Kinjo's group went to look for Krauss, although the key remained there. When they all entered the study, either Asune or Sanon entered Jessica's room, and locked it from the inside. Then, after Genji broke the window and everyone circled into the corridor, they left through the broken window, and went back downstairs while everyone was occupied with the corpse.

The door wasn't actually locked. Krauss just barricaded it in a way that made it seem like it was while he was dying. Genji took the barricade away after he entered.

The window Genji smashed was unlocked. After it was smashed, it was no longer considered a 'window', and is excluded from the reds regarding the locking of windows.

Genji locked the door from outside with his master key.

The door was sealed similar to how putting a pole between the door handles on a double door would stop someone from opening it, but with rope being tied around the handles instead. Rudolf mistook it for being locked.

Third Round: Third Body.
Genji in the study.

Seems like you have all been very interested with this one.

Genji suffered from previous injuries that he suddenly fell victim to.

I'll give you a freebie red before you make any theories.
After Jessica was attacked, the killer never went back up the stairs for the rest of the round.

The killer hid under the trapdoor in the boiler room.

Probably not that simple, you have a reputation when it comes to boiler rooms...

You completely have your layout of this place mixed up, but I'll give it to you since the theory is technically correct. The trap door is at the bottom of the boiler room etc.

The killer pushed Jessica down the stairs with the key, as she fell she broke her neck and smashed into the shelf causing all the tools to fall on top of her.

So yes, they never even needed to enter the room to kill her. Of course she didn't die until you got there. Moving on.

Bingo, we have a winner.

During the night Jessica's inhaler was poisoned, later in the game she needed to use it and the poison happened to take effect near the end like you said. Her deaths in Rounds 1, 2, and 3 are the same. The reason 5th ended so quickly was because you locked the inhaler inside of her room, so in turn she was poisoned during breakfast instead.

Good work, if we were still counting then Ouro, GE, and Kinjo would be tied with Rudolf lagging behind. Not that it matters, the who/why will be the only thing to determine the winner.

Alright then, all the howdunits are solved. We are at the finale of the game.

All the players must now write up their final theory for the who/why and send it to me over skype before Wednesday /seacats/ board time (deadline is Tuesday at midnight if that makes more sense). So that is more or less two days, which I think is rather generous. Since the howdunits weren't much of a competition, whoever has the most correct theory for the who/why will be considered the winner, of course if nobody gets close enough then I win.

Edit: I was ready to post however Ouro hasn't been on at all, he probably doesn't even know about the deadline. I'm giving him a half day to send me the theory, for I am posting the solution tomorrow regardless.

Who: Natsuhi
Why: She felt guilt for killing the baby that Kinzo gave her and decided to kill her own daughter to balance the scales. Krauss finds out what she plans to do and she kills him as well. In my game, she ended her own life. Genji didn't want Jessica to know the truth of her mother's crimes or suicide, so he confessed to the crime. In Ouro's game, Genji tried to stop Natsuhi, but she killed him and Krauss took the blame for his wife.

Who: Rosa
Why: Needed money for Maria in hospital or something.

(note that Rudolf had literally no time to make a theory, so this is all I got)

Let's assume that the culprit does not die by their own hand.
After all, the culprit is the same among all games, while different people are murdered.
This eliminates:

We are left with:

Let's also assume the culprit cannot trick or deceive themselves on purpose.
Now look at the red truth from the endgame.
We have red confirming that Sanon was tricked by the culprit.
Also, Rudolf did not lie about his story in the third round, and he was also misled.

We are left with:

EVA, HIDEYOSHI, KYRIE, ROSA, BATTLER, GEORGE, ANGE, ASUNE, GOHDA

Krauss and Genji forged the letter. Krauss had written it to make it seem like Jessica was really Kinzo's granddaughter, when he believed she was the daughter of Kinzo and Beatrice (Kinzo's supposed mistress).
Natsuhi then confesses to Krauss that Jessica was really her daughter. While Krauss is overjoyed that the letter isn't lying after all, Genji felt deceived, and decided to kill Jessica (an unfitting heir).

The second envelope Jessica received was a note from Krauss, telling Jessica to play along with everything. Jessica lies to Kinjo when he asks her about its contents, not wanting to incriminate her deceased father.

Genji poisoned Jessica's inhaler. He entered the room and turned on the light, searching for it. During this time, Krauss entered the room (thinking Jessica was awake past her bedtime).
But Krauss soon realized what Genji was doing, and tried to stop him. They got into a fight, and Genji won.

In the first round, Reinon goes to deliver medicine to Rosa (for her daughter). On her way there, she witnesses Genji's crime, and is knocked out and tied up in the boiler room as a result.
This is because Reinon had the mansion shift.

In the second and fourth rounds, when Asune has the mansion shift, she takes a different path, and does not die.
This is because she is off having fun with Battler. Reinon could also not be reached by phone, thanks to Kinjo, so Rosa was unable to call anyone.
Furthermore, in the fourth round Krauss wins the struggle, killing Genji in self-defense.

In the third round, Guinevere takes Reinon's place, and in the fifth round, Maria prevents Genji from entering the room at all.

However, while Genji is heavily involved in these crimes, he is not the culprit. Specifically because of the fourth round, in which Jessica dies from something other than poison, after Genji is already dead.
There is another person who kills Jessica, and this person is the culprit.

This person... is Asune.

Consider everyone's alibis for that murder.

Eva, Hideyoshi, Kyrie, and Rosa were in the study with Togami.
George, Battler, and Ange were last seen with Jessica in Jessica's room.

We are left with:

ASUNE, GOHDA

Asune has no alibi for Jessica's murder in the fourth round, while everyone else (besides Gohda) is accounted for.
Gohda has absolutely no motive to be involved in any sort of murder scheme, but Asune certainly does.

Asune's motivation is simple: she wants Battler to become the head of the family, not Jessica, and so she wants Jessica dead.
Asune has worked here for years and would be a good friend of Jessica. She would also know Battler from a previous conference, and probably stayed in contact.
Having read lots of mystery novels thanks to Battler, she would know how to perform murders that other people wouldn't be able to do.

Asune was last seen in the laundry room, but enough time would have passed for her to go to the guesthouse and back.
Togami finds Asune with George, Battler, and Ange, having effectively taken Jessica's place.
Somehow Jessica ended up going to the guesthouse, where Sanon found her dead.

Furthermore, Asune does not have an alibi for the previous night. She always leaves the mansion or guesthouse around 11 pm to go see Battler.
However, anything could happen during this time, regardless of whether or not Battler even knows about her intentions.
Asune is also completely unaccounted for during the first round's endgame. It's possible that Battler is the one who shot her, too.

Now, as for the connection between Genji and Asune...

Asune is the baby that Natsuhi thought she murdered years ago, but secretly survived.
Thus, Asune is the true successor. Genji realized this, and went to tell Asune.
They formulated a plan and together sought to kill Jessica as soon as possible.

Genji would do all of Asune's work, being a loyal servant to his master. He would also take all of the blame for the murders upon himself, allowing Asune to live peacefully with Battler.
And as we all know, murder alone does not make Genji the culprit -- he was simply acting as furniture, he himself the murder weapon through which Asune carried out all her plans.

Good game, Ozaki. You fooled me once. But you can't put me in an RP game with a maid culprit twice in a row and expect me to be fooled again!!!

Normally I like to explain all of the mystery before revealing the culprit; however I don’t think I can do that very well given how this game is made. So I’ll just come out and tell you that the culprit is Natsuhi, and the accomplice is Genji. Of course now you are thinking, “Oh nice GE solved it” however that isn’t the case, I’ll explain further along.

For now, continuing with the backwards reveal I will now explain the whydunit. First off I must say that this game was crafted with a different mindset, and that the characterization is what contained most of the hints. In fact you were supposed to find evidence only after solving it, so you can corner/kill/capture the culprit during the game. For this reason I can see why the theories were incorrect, however while this may normally seem like a flaw, a number of times each player commented on how weird it was how Natsuhi acted. In fact I imagine they simply said to themselves “Oh silly Ozaki being lazy with the characters,” or when it came to Genji. “That can’t be it, too simple/doesn’t make sense/Ozaki wouldn’t hand out the answer like that” when in fact it turned out said moments were what you were supposed to question.

The one that comes to mind is when Kinjo clearly said in chat, “Natsuhi seems to be relatively calm for finding her husband dead. Where are the tears? I bet she killed him.” to which I jokingly played off. Many times Natsuhi is shown to not care about Krauss dying, or even Jessica for that matter; literally caring more about shooting Eva rather than her own daughter dying on the ground who could be saved. She also is stated to ‘copy’ Rosa’s reaction to finding Krauss dead, and while this next part isn’t conclusive, you have to wonder why Natsuhi never heard Krauss getting murdered when she was sleeping so close and is stated to hear other things in the hallway.

At this point you are probably wondering how GE’s theory isn’t correct. The main difference is the fact Natsuhi tricked Krauss during that confession scene, and that she only really killed once. As you can imagine with what you have heard about Kinzo, arranged marriages were the norm and Natsuhi and Krauss really didn’t care for one another. However Natsuhi wasn’t as strong at the time to do something like throw the baby off the edge, not with the pressure that Kinzo used. So when she told Krauss that Jessica was her child she was lying. Which means Jessica in this game is Kinzo’s illegitimate child just like Krauss and Genji originally assumed. The reason Kinzo was becoming nicer in his later years was because he wanted to atone for his sins, and decided to raise her as a grandfather should, not as his obsessive toy.

So this all being said, that means we have another force at work here: Genji. Looking at your theories it seems the fact Natsuhi died was a factor to cross her off, but in fact by simply believing that Genji really did kill her (since accomplices can kill) it makes sense. While being called an accomplice, he was closer to a pawn, a piece of furniture of you will. Natsuhi purposely let him overhear the conversation by writing on the schedule to go clean the VIP room (which you could have found if you went back after that time). As you’ve heard from Reinon and some of the other characters, Genji will follow any order. So is fair to assume someone who served Kinzo for all his live would also share his ideals, or once gave an order that he would continue to follow to this day, and in turn not want tainted blood within the family. So, upon hearing that Jessica wasn’t truly the heir to family he took it upon himself to kill her. In fact Natsuhi only kills Jessica in the route which Genji dies, and Natsuhi only dies in the route where Genji is captured, which are major hints to her in the first place. After all in the fourth round the accomplice dies, so then the culprit must have killed Jessica. Looking at the alibis on that route, it is unlikely that anyone besides Natsuhi, Gohda, Sanon, and Rosa could have killed Jessica, and seeing how Rosa, Sanon, and Gohda have no motives it becomes pretty clear using this logic that Natsuhi is the culprit.

Anyway I will now simply go through each route and explain in a timeline fashion what happened.

Round 1

As explained in game Genji goes to Jessica’s room with the intent to poison the inhaler, he naturally got this poison from Kinzo’s study as it is explained many chemicals are stored there. He also removed a gun during that time so he could use it later if needed. While in Jessica’s room however Krauss finds him and they get into a fight ending in Krauss getting stabbed (which were pretty precise and should have told you a professional was at work). Now how does Reinon come into this? Well, back when Natsuhi was spilling her beans about Jessica, someone was in the same position that Kinjo was in round 5. Reinon was in the closet and saw Genji coming out, later she got a bad feeling and decided to write a letter to warn Krauss. Genji found this on the body after killing Krauss, so he hunted down Reinon and was undeceive about killing her. After a struggle he ended up half-heartedly leaving her tied up, and then breaking the pipe to have her drowned after knocking her out.

After this nothing much is to note, save for the ending. Eventually the flood enters the hall and Genji noticed the gasoline mixed in with the water and decided to use it to his advantage. Following the explosions he goes to get the hidden gun and notices Jessica from one of the windows in on the third floor, he opens it up and aims to fire, only to find Rosa pointing the gun at him. They kill each other thusly.

Round 2

Funny enough, almost everything Kinjo did with intent to change the route didn’t do anything. Simply having Reinon take guesthouse duty saves her completely, so faking his death and cutting the phone wire has absolutely no purpose. In any case, since Reinon isn’t there to warn Krauss, the closed room changes because Genji doesn’t need to worry about the boiler room. However the major difference is that Sanon breaks the cups in the hallway and blocks Genji’s path out. While she is cleaning up he takes note of Asune and Battler in the garden and decides to make it seem like the murders happened while she was cleaning up the glass. After flicking the light he escapes back to the servant room, making it seem like Genji couldn’t have committed that murder. The evidence to deduce this is a false alibi is simple, the light flashed upon investigating, which means the lamp wasn’t on when it was smashed. This is because once the filament burns out you can’t turn it back on, which implies that the light Asune saw was indeed done by the culprit simply trying to mislead.

After Kinjo leaves with the others to go find Jessica’s inhaler Natsuhi decides to try and pin it on Genji, who promptly figures out he has been set up and decided to get rid of Natsuhi. In the gun fight that follows most people are wounded if not dead, and Natsuhi escapes through the window of the parlor outside. Through the window she sees Jessica and starts to shoot at her, Jessica could have simply been shot, but even if she wasn’t the poison would have killed her either way.

Round 3

Well, similarly to the ending of Round 2, in the morning Natsuhi and Genji confront each other in the parlor, and Genji decides to kill her. After setting up the closed room he realizes it doesn’t really matter at this point and just lets himself get captured. However the major difference he knows it is too late to stop the poison and just waits for it take effect anyway. His smile at the end wasn’t happiness but despair.

Round 4

With Reinon in the guesthouse, when Ouro gives the milk to Ange it allows Reinon to get the phone call from Rosa, as explained in game. Krauss and Reinon were telling the truth with their story about Genji during the night as you would expect. While they are all talking in the study, during this time Natsuhi decides to take killing Jessica into her own hands and does exactly as described already. After Sanon discovers the body, Natsuhi pretends to discover it with the others.

Kinjo locks the inhaler away from Genji and with Jessica not in her room he decided to just wait until morning and poison her water. She dies and the game ends as expected.

So that is that. In the end Kinjo’s theory ends up having more things correct since he went out of the way to explain everything (Got the part about Genji being a pawn, and thus culprit must be whoever killed Jessica on the fourth round), however he crossed off Natsuhi at the start which ultimately sealed his fate (if not for that I think he would have gotten it). Looking at GE’s theory we see that they picked Natsuhi, perhaps subconsciously feeling she must be the culprit, but the means for coming to that conclusion and the whydunit itself is so off the mark I can’t consider it correct either. Finally Rudolf didn’t have enough time to really think about any other suspects so we are left with no players really solving the game. At the very least GE and Kinjo tied for almost winning, for if either of them had figured out the deception with Genji (ie took it as stated) then both of their theories would have been significantly closer to the truth.

Anyway, I’m sure there are some questions that will be asked in skype chat so I’ll make a Q/A post to explain anything that was left out of this explanation.

Q: What was the deal with Rosa and the hospital? Did it really have no purpose?

A: It had a purpose. Maria really was sick and Rosa needed money, however she was trying to extort more then she really needed from Krauss and that pissed him off. The reason why this is in the game is because When you create an RP game you don’t want it to be just a ‘spot the difference’ game. So I gave the other characters reasons to also commit the crime, at least from at first glance it would appear that way. Only if you really took the time to narrow it down would you find the true motive. Ultimately none of these were ever investigated well enough and only Battler and Asune subplot really was shown.

Q: Why was Kinjo looking for vodka?

A: There is an old joke that originated back when Kinjo made his 3rd Fangame. In said game there was a glitch that if you passed out from drinking alcohol you would travel back in time to the start of the day, thus letting you explore as much as you wanted without worrying about the time. This is what Reprise was based off of so in spirit of this I actually added vodka into the game which would allow the player to turn back the clock three times. It was never found in the end. The location was as follows: in the guesthouse before the time-skip, then in Genji’s locker for the first night, and finally in the chapel for the rest of the game. Genji left it as an offering to Kinzo’s sprit.

Q: What would have happened if the game went as you planned? You mentioned multiple times that you had some endgame in mind.

A: It was the intent that the players follow down the same path which Ouro took for the final round and instead of rushing to the study they head to the guesthouse in order to catch the culprit in the act(before pushing Jessica down the stairs). They then would get a blue truth gun in game and try to shoot Natsuhi. Jessica would have jumped in the way and the game would freeze, seemingly ending once more. Then Jessica would rise up and start oozing black sludge indicating that she was in some way that creature. The endgame would be a pseudo trail like in EP5 and would involve this Jessica trying to deny that Natsuhi is the culprit and in turn you solving the mysteries one by one.

Q: Speaking of that, what was the meta story about anyway?

A: In the theme of those man and creature scenes are kinda paradoxical in nature. Essentially, the man was me, and the creature was essentially all the bad endings Jessica had merged into a being. Think of it like a Bernkastel who took a turn for the worse. So in a sense it was a ‘witch’. On the flip side however, all the meta scenes were to symbolize me creating the game. The numbers shown in the meta scenes were the number of days it took to play said games. Snowflake referring to Kinjo and Repercussion, and the blue haired doll being of course for Desecration and Rika-Beatrice thus representing how I looked at both of those games and tried to use that information to make this one.

Q: Compared to Repercussion and Desecration, in what order are the most difficult?

A: Desecration was meant to be ridiculously hard in the first place (which it was). Repercussion was my first game so I consider it average difficulty. As for this game, well I made this one to be more like an adventure game, and to do that I made the mystery considerably easier for the howdunits, and more invested in dialogue and character hints. It may not be the hardest, but I think is is probably the most solid out of all main games. I think anyone who has read my other games would agree on that.

Q: What was in that god damn second letter?

A: Instructions to Jessica on how to locate the hidden gold. It would have been possible to follow her there if you went directly to the chapel, which was never even visited once during this game.

Q: Why did you always find it funny when people took the light bulb or cut the wire on the phone?

A: It was because neither had a purpose. The light alibi is only used in route 2, and no other route. So every time these guys would do that it would have no effect on the route they were in. Same thing with the phone really, the only time it would have done something is if you stop Jessica from calling the servant room; which even if you did it then would basically just erase the progress you made and put you back onto the old route.

Q: Why when GE was locked in the boiler room the door wasn’t locked but for Reinon it was?

A: Genji found Reinon there in the room, but found GE upstairs and had to find a time where it was safe to carry them down there. This made him miss the window of opportunity to switch the keys, for he would have had to go to the guesthouse as well. Thus not being able to lock the door.
