To be fair, I'd probably do something similar.

After learning all of history/instruments/science similar to what Bill did, I'd probably break down mentally and I would start killing differently over and over in various ways and analyzing every reaction and outcomes. Finding the easiest way to cover up crimes, seeing how people react to certain things, creating a body farm for my own use to record data, etc.

Then hopefully be able to find a way to escape after gaining all that knowledge, then I'm set.
