It's a work of fiction that uses characters based on real (or famous fictional) people. Nowhere does it say the work is based on a true story, that this really happened, or could happen. There are no articles discussing these matches, or any mahjong matches having such high stakes, even on WikiLeaks. There is simply no way to back up the claims, no investigations into them, nobody else giving any indication that they think it's real, no other person on the internet taking it seriously, and no reason the author would know about all these things despite the rest of the world being entirely in the dark. So why should this be taken as fact when it gives every indication it's fictional? If you answered something other than something to the tune of "it shouldn't", you've failed the course
Oh, and some of the people who died are most definitely still alive, while some different people who are depicted as alive are most definitely dead.
