So this is what could be done:
-Find sets of rows in the posts table where that have matching file_md5 and boardid fields
-Choose one of the posts to keep the attached file of, it doesn't really matter which
-Look at the the file, file_type and boardid fields of the posts you didn't choose, and use those fields to write to a list of files that need to be deleted by their paths (and the paths of their thumbnails)
-Change all the file fields of all the posts you didn't choose the the same value as the one you did

After that, the posts themselves should all refer to the same files. You can figure out how to go about actually deleting the files afterwards, with the list you created.

I can now confirm this works, I tested it.

All the posts are generated from the database anyway, so anything that referred to one image will now refer to another if you just change the file field of the row. You need to rebuild the html files after doing it, of course.

Actually, there's a big problem with the method. It would mean that deleting any post with an attached file would also also delete all instances of that file. You could change the password hashes for each of the files or something, but then anyone with mod powers could still delete them.

The best solution to that would be checking upon deletion to make sure no other posts reference the image, or simply disabling the automatic deletion of images from deleted posts and then having another query that deletes images that are no longer referenced.

Assume we actually implemented this, and then there weren't any duplicate instances of images. All the posts that used to have duplicate attachments now point to the same file. By default, when someone deletes their post through the board, the image associated with that post is deleted. Without doing something about it, following this method means that all the posts that reference that image will have their links broken if just one is deleted.

Just wipe the archive from existence.
