Episode 7 was kind of slow to us because it basically just confirmed most of out theories but without finishing off the deal. I found Lion as a character a bit annoying, and Will even if cool, he was a bit too much of a Gary Stu.

Episode 8 felt like, "fk you guys, seriously do you want another episode? then I'll write another episode!". Even then, I rather enjoyed it, even if the "lol epic fight" was kind of cliche.

Thinking back, I think I would order them something like this:
3 = 4 > 8 > 1 > 6 > 2 > 7 > 5

I'm surprised you can still rank 8 so highly. I'm not sure how to order them as I like all episodes except 8. 1, 3, 7 and 6 are probably my favorites. It doesn't even feel right to leave 2 and 5 out of that though. I also like 4, but the Ange sections drag it down. Even if they do have some of the best Rosa parts.

Episode 7 had Lion, the worst character ever (no offense to our Lion), and Willard, the most pointless character ever. Having to hear Yasu's life story was mind-numbing. I think I enjoyed episode 7 the least of any episode. The only good part was the very beginning, with Battler sealing away the book.

In a way or another, I liked the ending. And the part at the beginning was quite nice, even if one could argue it was a total lie.
It doesn't really answers anything, and it might even just create more questions, but that's how it was planned, so in a way, Ryucakes was quite successful with what he planned.
And if the answer was really given, well, I don't think playing gameboards right now would feel the same.

That's not really very informative. What was wrong with Lion's character exactly? S/he was about what I'd expect him/her to be, and s/he seemed perfectly likeable. And Willard wasn't pointless at all; he provided a viewpoint for the whole episode - and in my view, there couldn't have been a better viewpoint than his to use.

I thought Yasu's story was absolutely beautiful, and I always feel quite sad when I see people saying they didn't enjoy it. To me, that part of the episode pretty much epitomises everything that Umineko is about, so I have to feel like people that were disappointed by it really must have really been misunderstanding what the point of the series was...

Not to mention that Breakdown of the Witch's Illusion is simply the most wonderful chapter ever. I adore every second of it.

>>67758
This doesn't really seem accurate. Even if you dislike the core arcs - and you're entitled to your opinion - how could you say they were "imitating what came before"? The entire core arcs had a hugely different tone and style from the question arcs, and reading them was a very different experience. If you were expecting the same thing from them that you were from the question arcs, then it's no wonder that you were disappointed.

That said, regardless of the actual plot of the core arcs, I think it's pretty hard to dispute that their actual quality of writing is much, much better than the question arcs, and that makes them feel much more immersive, to me at least. I don't know if it's because Ryukishi's writing actually got better or the translators simply became more experienced, but either way, it's pretty hard to go back to the almost amateurish style of the question arcs afterwards.

My ranking is 7>5>4>8>3>6>2>1, for the record. But it's a pretty small difference for everything before 6, because I find a lot to love in all but the bottom three episodes. (And even they're probably still more enjoyable than anything that ISN'T Umineko...)

I didn't read it until after the first seven episodes were already translated, which I admit did probably give me a different perspective on the series than you guys. I guess most long-running series are more enjoyable when the whole thing is already released, since you don't have all that time spent between episodes picking everything apart and getting hugely hyped for the next installment.

But I still find it a little depressing how most of the fanbase seems to have been so disappointed by the last few episodes. Still, Ryukishi did say that only one in a thousand people would truly understand his story, so I guess he probably wasn't that surprised at the majority's reaction...

Heh, I'm guessing Ryukishi is underestimating his fanbase a little bit. The story it's not that hard to understand, it's simply a little hard to enjoy, if what you were looking for a traditional mystery.

While I like the writing of the answer arc, I wouldn't call them "more deep", because that only calls for a flame war about what's deep and what's not.

In my opinion, Ep7 strong points were Yasu's backstory and Clair's funeral, but I can agree in something with Rin. Ryukishi tried a bit too hard not to accept Shkanon, and I think it only make things worse. For example, this 10 hours video of that guy who says Rosa is Beatrice because "it makes more sense".

Well, I do understand that criticism, but I feel like that was probably intentional as well. People who were too focused on "what made logical sense", rather than what made for a more consistent story and fit with "the heart", would never find the answer. Or even they did, they wouldn't accept it, because it isn't an answer that makes sense as a "logical solution". He may have gone a litle too far with it, but I can see what he was trying to do and appreciate it.

I guess that this board in particular was really into the whole theory-making side of things, so in retrospect I suppose it's not at all surprising that they didn't like how it turned out.

That guy is just nuts. Rosa = Beatrice is not more acceptable the way he explains it. And his examples of 'points that make Shakannon look stupid' are proof of his misconception about both Shakannon, the story, the rules of the world, and the characters.

It might be a bit unfair for me to say something in the name of the whole board but, I think we have mixed opinions about it.
Thanks to our problematic Guardian spirit, we come to accept Shkanontrice before EP6 was translated (and trust me, we were really against it).

Personally, I didn't dislike Umineko at all after that, actually, reading EP6 with Shkanontrice in mind was even a little amusing.

As anon-kun said the Shkanon theory was well known before EP7, and the majority of the fanbase simply didn't want it to be true. Hence why most of EP7 would be considered boring to the theory-makers; it's just telling us things we already know (and yet at the same time DON'T want to know) in a very boring and slow-paced way. I think the reveal could have been done better, but Ryukishi wanted to be subtle, I guess -- or maybe he was just building everything up to be smashed away by the tea party (my favorite part of the episode).

Some might say they hate Shkanon because it was "illogical" or whatever but something tells me that the fanbase simply wanted to be surprised by Ryukishi with a totally different answer... which is why you get people still theorizing today trying to find an alternate solution.

In other words, Shkanon is so incredibly simple that to the people who had theorized so much between episodes it almost seems like a cop-out, when if you look at the series as a whole (like you did) it seems more justifiable.

if you think about it, you can give clues, but sometimes that clues can give different answers, In my opinion Ryukishi changed the answer~

Really? I'm pretty sure everything up to EP7 was planned from the beginning.
It fits what Ryukishi said about the answer. Just in case Rika didn't read it before, I'm adding it:

Ryukishi: Who knows(laughs)? I’m right in the middle of writing EP5 now. I’ve started thinking that it’s about time to expose the answers to a few riddles, but as I’ve said before, I don’t want to go and say “X is the answer” like I did in Higurashi. After all, Umineko is a “thinking game”, and I want everyone to enjoy “discussions”. In a puzzle book, if the answer is written on the next page, your thinking stops the instant you see it, right? I’m aiming to release the answers in a way that will make those who have reached the right conclusion know that they got it right, and yet give only a hint to those who don’t yet understand the answer.
For example, if we presume that the answer to a riddle was “apple”, then when we turn the page and see “something round and red”, people who thought the answer was apple will think “ah, just what I thought” and have their reasoning confirmed. And for people who didn’t know, it becomes a hint: “What is red and round?” This is the approach I am aiming for. So I think players like you, Keiya, who enthusiastically theorize about this game, will be able to enjoy the series even more during EP5 and after. In EP5, essential information regarding several riddles will appear, but those who reach the answer might begin to view these as red herrings, so reading the hints could make things even more confusing.

And also:

Ryukishi: Yeah, I’ll bet. Many hints will appear in EP5 as well. When the pivotal answers come out in EP6 and EP7, I suggest that you replay starting from EP1 and enjoy how early on the foreshadowing begins. Like when you get a new key in an RPG, and return to the very first dungeon to get a treasure chest behind a door that you couldn’t open before(laughs). That’s an especially fun part of Umineko. Even now, there are many things you’ll understand if you go back to EP1. But there are still many treasure chests waiting in EP1 that can’t be opened yet. After playing EP5, EP6, and EP7, you might go back to EP1 and think “This is a huge clue” or “It’s almost obvious!”
This story will be fun to read over again. The anime will start very soon, won’t it? People with certain suspicions might say “Ah!” and clap their hands at certain points in the anime.

It would be pretty hard to argue that he didn't hvae the solution planned from the start; the hints to it are simply all over the place, after all, and there was simply no need to have such a huge amount of George/Shannon and Jessica/Kanon scenes if those relationships weren't pivotal to the story somehow.

On the other hand, as to what exactly happened in each episode, I think he decided that based mostly on fan reactions, rather than actually outlining the whole story from the start. For example, Episode 5 was almost certainly a response to a Natsuhi culprit theory that was apparently popular in Japan at the time.

Reminds me of when I (among other people) denied Shkanon by saying all of those hints were red herrings to distract us from the real truth.

I don't think I ever clapped my hands during that "anime". Seriously, will there never be a Chiru?

Truly one of the best parts of the episode in question.

He's like a retarded goat, seriously how do you spend enough time studying Umineko to make 10 hours video about it and still don't get it ?

I find funny to refer to Yasu's story as beautiful, it's honestly a pretty stupid story, in fact Beato's motives are stupid and childish, but... that's the point. This is what I really liked when I accepted Shkannon and thought about the whole story.
Basically, it's as Battler says in Ep5's teaparty, doing all of this really was foolish, but in her attachment to themes, symbols and metaphors, and that pitiful stubbornness of hers to constantly hide the truth behind lies, deceit and riddles, because of how much this truth hurts her... It's honestly really beautiful, beautifully foolish.

I've been busy lately but I should be back on there by tomorrow or soon after. To be honest I probably shouldn't be procrastinating on here right now, but I couldn't stay away from Umineko discussion~

And that is a very nice description of Yasu/Beatrice, too. Although, by "beautiful" I was more referring to the creative use of the theatre setting, all the pretty music, the heartwarming way the (wholely delusional) friendship between Yasu and Gaap is presented, and things like that.

Ah, true, I do like the way it is presented as well, even if it is somewhat pompous.

Also, I'll stream Maoyuu Ep5, Kotoura ep 5, Inferno cop ep 7 and eventually Sasami san ep 5 if subs do come out tonight.
If I feel like it, I might stream some Psycho pass afterwards, though not the latests episodes.
Get in here, I'll start streaming probably in 30 min :

>I thought Yasu's story was absolutely beautiful, and I always feel quite sad when I see people saying they didn't enjoy it. To me, that part of the episode pretty much epitomises everything that Umineko is about, so I have to feel like people that were disappointed by it really must have really been misunderstanding what the point of the series was...
I can agree with that.
>Not to mention that Breakdown of the Witch's Illusion is simply the most wonderful chapter ever.
As in the best chapter in the entire series? wat

From what I remember, he was being vague as to whether there would even be an episode 7 until there actually was. Is this from the same interview? Because I find it very strange to see he talked about an upcoming episode 7 before the anime had even started.
