No, I don't think frame of reference has much to do with it. When there are a large number of good anime from the 90s, and even the 80s, then late 1990s to ~2008 aren't what I'd call "old" by any standards.
A child born in 1998 would be 14 today. That's pretty young no matter how you look at it.

I've got the entire iDOLM@STER soundtrack without having played any of the games, a bunch of Liar-soft VN soundtracks despite only having read Inganock, a handful of Nitro+ VN soundtracks from VNs I haven't read, the entire Aria soundtrack collection despite only having watched The Animation so far, etc.

One of the PSP games is translated, as far as I'm aware. Perfect Sun, I think it was. Besides that the games themselves are actually pretty straightforward. It's not like the Japanese or the gameplay are especially difficult, and I could've played through them easily enough if I had the money to import the games and a console to play them on.

The spoken lines are easy enough. It's written Japanese that's the difficult part. And honestly, Idolmaster's script is no Muramasa anyway.
That said, seems like my Japanese comprehension is still a level below one or two others on here. Guess that's what I get for slacking off with it for so long.

Dunno. I can understand most anime without subs, though it takes longer to watch them that way since reading subs in my native language is much quicker and easier. Most Slice-of-Life shows I have no problems with at all.
