Just one point though, I'm also one of those people who thinks all the "symbolism" is mostly people just reading way too hard into a lot of elements that were never there in the first place. It's the same sort of people who think that the Christian imagery in Evangelion held more meaning than simply being there to look cool, or who thought that FLCL was more than just an animated (though brilliantly fun to watch) metaphor for a boy's adolescence.
The symbolism is certainly there, people just like to pretend that it means more than it does.

Yeah, it's his latest creation. But it's got nothing to do with When They Cry or Higanbana, aside from a few cameos, so you don't have to read anything else first.
As for the game itself, I like the fighting segments. I'm hoping they get more difficult as it progresses, but as for the story I can't really understand it that well even with a machine translator. There's a lot more gameplay and interactivity though, for example, the fighting sections as well as choosing where to go in the city.

Put it together myself, Doc. While I'm not so keen on Ryukishi's writing and all that, I do quite like this guy's character design. Even if the sprites are a bit small.

It's acceptable for English language amateur VNs to not have voices because everyone would just end up disabling them anyway, but for a group like 07th Expansion who have become popular enough to have a number of their works made into TV anime, lacking voices (and more importantly making the resolution 640x480) in 2012 is just a sign of being way behind the times.
I can see one benefit to it already, though. It at least means the voices don't get in the way of the damn nice music.

I want to say "inconsistency," but that's not exactly true. If nothing else it's consistently terrible.
My main problem would be the way he goes about executing his ideas. He comes up with some cool concepts, but every time he somehow manages to pick apart and destroy everything that made that idea good in the first place over its execution.
One huge problem is the way he paces things. It's like proper pacing is a mystery to the man, and he goes on to write 50+ hours of nothing filling it with maybe 10+ hours of scenes that are actually interesting to read. I'd have no problem with this if the boring scenes at least contributed to the plot in some way, but when they're mostly "It's still fucking raining, do you know how long it has been fucking raining, oh man I wish the old man who totally isn't dead would come out of his study already," it gets old fast.
That brings me to another big point, which would be his tendency to repeat things over and over. Yes, yes, I get the hints and you've shoved the foreshadowing down my throat quite enough already, can we get on with the plot now? What, that was it? It's time for the next chapter? Well so much for that, then.
And one thing...... that's not really a....... problem with just Ryukishi's... writing... but the fucking...... ellipses... all over... the damn...... place......... is really...... painful to... read......

I could go on and on, but that's enough wall of text for now. I was about to jump in the shower before typing all this up anyway.

Good thing I wasn't drinking coffee, because I would have totally spilled it while reading that.
I guess it's inside of the nature of a story that repeats itself to be, well, a bit repetitive. I won't argue about the pacing in general, but I will say I liked the slice of life scenes in Higurashi. In my opinion they were there to make you forget about the whole mess that is going to happen later.
About the hints: well it becomes a little painful at EP7, but it still wasn't enough for a lot of people, so yeah, maybe he should have just accepted it directly instead of giving more "hints".

For the slice of life scenes in Higurashi, I think they were meant to contrast with the brutality of the following events and make us care for the characters. Maybe to draw in some devious fanbase too but I don't want to go that way ~

I take most of Chiru's hints and sayings as a big middle finger towards some incompetent readers. The internet goats in EP8 are a huge exemple.

One thing that I really found painful in Ryu's writing though, is the way some of the scenes are incredibly awkward. For exemple, the EP1 first twilight, when Battler screams at the discovery of the corpses, which totally goes beyond reality with him just describing in the thourough detail the ways their faces have been destroyed, I know it was supposed to be an hint for faking death, but that just broke the tragic feeling, I actually ended up laughing rather than getting emotionally invested.

Still, Ryu's ideas and concepts still amazes me. He really comes up with fascinating concepts.

I once had a capital in the desert near some desert hills and flood plains and an oasis, built Petra in it and took the Desert Path pantheon, some of those tiles had pretty silly yields by the end~

Petra's great in a desert city, it works best with desert hills, desert resources (like wheat or sheep), and oases~ Plain flatland desert is still kinda meh even with Petra, as I don't think you can farm it unless it happens to be next to a oasis or other body of fresh water (any desert tiles that are next to a river become flood plains which don't work with Petra, so it'd have to be a lake or oasis)~
