Really? I like what I've heard about it, it reminds me of DA2 (same company). Granted I didn't play the first two so I wouldn't know what the news means in the context of a long-term player, but I like those sorts of games for the depth they give your party members and even your own character.

DA2 was pretty terrible (Unless you didn't play the first one and maybe that expansion type dealie they had for it). And you pretty much need to have played the first two Mass Effect games if you're going to play 3 at least. The choices sound good if presented right in ME3, but by the sound of it, they aren't at all, plus some characters that they added which make NO SENSE in the story. (The ancient killed off race, protheans for example, you get one as a party member in ME3 somehow, I could go on and on but I think you get the point.)

I tried to play the first one at a friend's, but it was kind of weird where all the other characters had vivid voices and such and you were just a flat template. So I only got into it with the second. Also, from what I heard, you don't have to pay the first two to enjoy the third one. Maybe that's just marketing nonsense though.

It is indeed marketing nonsense. You lose a lot of the story from the first two games, plus background information of the characters (recurring or otherwise) along with the plot. (For instance, you were working with Cerberus in ME2, now that you've separated from them, they are working with the Reapers in ME3, two of your party members were part of Cerberus)

As for DA1, I liked it because they gave you a lot of different choices/stories for your character to choose from at the start, and even influences the story based on what race you are, what your beginning story was, etc, and all your actions could determine the end of the first game. That all gets thrown out the window in Dragon Age 2, nothing your character does affects the ending or really any scenes to be honest.

Ah, almost forgot, for ME1, your choices carry over (if you killed off one of your allies, etc), to ME2, then the same thing for ME2 to 3. (Your choices in 1 affect 2, so there would be storyline changes if you were evil, good, neutral, etc)
