A couple of nights ago, I had an incredibly bizarre dream. In it I had the ability to stop time for up to a few seconds at a time, but required me to concentrate on it intensely just to get this strange power to work.
It started out in a hotel lobby. I was sitting there with my aunt, three of my cousins, my little brother, and a strange, tall man in a black suit and wearing sunglasses. There were also a few guests who were staying at the hotel sitting beside us in the lobby, as we sat there talking. There were about ten of us in total, and we just sat there talking for a short while.
All of a sudden though, the power in the hotel cut out and the sun dropped from the sky like a pebble, almost as if it had been nighttime for hours now. The people around me vanished one by one, swallowed by the encroaching darkness, until I was left alone with the strange man who I believe introduced himself to me as "[Mister] John Doe". He was a weird guy, but he had an incredibly smooth voice and seemed to understand the situation completely. Less as if it were completely normal to him, and more that he seemed to have been expecting it from the start.
The two of us wandered down the blackened lobby and up a flight of stairs which I could have sworn hadn't been there before. Once we reached the top of the stairs, the hallway split into three directions in front of us. A hallway off to the left, and two more sets of stairs, one set leading off to the right and the other leading straight ahead. By this point Mister Doe had vanished as well, probably partway down the corridor.
I heard a noise coming from the stairs on the right, and walked up a short way to find my aunt wandering about up there. She was looking for her sons (two of my aforementioned cousins), and had apparently been with them until just a few minutes ago. I decided to lead her back to the lobby, only to find that the two she was looking for had already found their way back there. The four of us sat there for a while, and my little brother reappeared with two of the other guests a short while later.
The seven of us sat talking while we waited for the others to return, and I decided to show off my time-stopping power while we waited. I concentrated incredibly hard and finally managed to freeze time, and the moment I did John Doe reappeared behind me. Only the two of us could move in this space, and he seemed somehow possessed when I looked at him. All of a sudden he grabbed my shoulders and launched me backwards right off my feet, and threw me into an all-enveloping darkness.
When I came around, I was sitting in the seat I had been in before, and just about everyone had returned by this time. The sun was up but the power was still out, and everyone was talking about something I couldn't make out because I was still disoriented.
It turned out that the front doors to the hotel wouldn't open, and John Doe still hadn't returned. I decided to go looking for him along with my cousin (not either of my aunt's sons, the cousin I'm currently living with). We went past the space where the strange stairs had been earlier, but they had vanished now and there were large glass doors in their place. To our surprise they weren't locked, but when we opened them what lay before us was what appeared to be a bloody large crater caused by a meteor, or a UFO, or something. There was also a large, yellow industrial digger in the crater for some reason or another, and it was moving by itself as though trying to dig something up.
The ledge around the crater was incredibly narrow, but a there was a hill leading up to the right and into the city. We made our way up the hill being careful not to fall into the crater, and I managed to spot John Doe at the top staring down into the large hole in the ground. For some reason my legs began to move on their own, and I felt like I had to catch this guy no matter what.
I ran too fast for my cousin to keep up, and I lost her after turning a corner at the top of the hill. John Doe was running down the middle of the road where, mysteriously, only two cars were driving, one a bright yellow taxi and the other a car black as coal. At first I thought he was going to get in one of the cars, but instead he ran between both of them and flew around another corner. Naturally I made chase, I didn't want to lose him.
As soon as I turned the corner I saw a massive skyscraper with scaffolding and building materials all around it, and the whole area had been fenced off. John Doe had run between a gap in the fences and into, or rather under, the large building. To my surprise, the only thing supporting this colossal structure was a set of four tree-stump-like pillars of concrete, one at each corner, and a large array of pipes and wooden planks underneath the building. It was like a patchwork labyrinth just barely supporting a gargantuan tower with a foundation so unstable it looked like the whole thing could come crashing down at any second.
The space in this labyrinth between the ground and the bottom of the building itself was only enough that I could crawl through it on my hands and knees, so I had to make my way through the clutter of debris and what appeared to be the remains of a shipwreck, but of course that was ridiculous. It must just have been ordinary scrap wood.
Now, when I came out of the other side, I was in what could only be described as a miniature desert with large concrete walls on all sides, and what looked like a sinkhole in the middle. John Doe was at the edge of the sinkhole looking down into it, and I saw in his eyes that primal greed that drives all men easily mad. Because what was reflected in those eyes was none other than an unimaginable amount of solid gold, so much that it made Kinzo's entire fortune seem like a child's pocket change.
I asked him about it, and he said that beneath our feet existed what was possibly the largest goldmine in existence, the existence of which had been completely hidden from the world for decades. Suddenly, the sky was darkened by clouds and the area was hit by an earthquake so violent that I thought for sure the world was about to split in half. Then, from the sinkhole containing the gold shot a towering spout of molten lava reaching twenty-odd feet into the air.
John Doe and I tried to flee, but the shipwreck beneath the building had been shaken out of place and obstructed the way, so we had no choice but to actually go through the building itself, which by this point had been shaken so bad that it had already begun its collapse. Running frantically up a small set of stairs and into the building, we ran straight through like our lives depended on it - which they most certainly did. Large lumps of concrete falling down in a shower and a whole panic of people with the same thoughts as us were thrown together into a chaotic brawl where it was every man for himself.
The two of us darted around to the side and tried to squeeze past the stampede of office workers, builders and parts of collapsed building. Through all of this it never even once occurred to me to try to stop time with my strange ability, but hell if I gave a damn about that, I just wanted to escape as fast as possible. Through sheer luck John Doe and I managed to find an unobstructed path out of the building, which we ran down at a speed faster than I had ever though possible for humans to run.
Firing out of the other side of the building like two bullets shot from the same gun, we rolled like a pair of marbles right back into the hotel lobby from earlier. I think we had run so fast we actually bent space and time, because I could think of no other explanation besides that to explain what the hell had just happened, but hell if I cared. John Doe probably felt the same, because he just lay there on his back trying to catch his breath after that superhuman sprint.
When we got up and looked back, the hotel lobby was the same as ever and not a thing looked out of place. John Doe suddenly told me all about the goldmine and how my power and his related to it. Apparently he had the power to bend space, and I had the power to manipulate time to some degree. After he finished his explanation he said he had moved the goldmine somewhere nobody would ever find it again, before walking out of the front door of the hotel and disappearing as if a slight gust of wind had blown him away.
When I woke up from that I started to wonder what the HELL had just happened, only to realize that I'll probably look exactly as John Doe had in my dream in a few years' time.
The very thought worried me.
