So this morning I finally got laid off, as financial problems finally reared their head and the chief executive had to make cuts. When I called my father to lament going on the dole, he suddenly fell quiet, and when I rushed over to his house I discovered he had had a heart attack and is now in the IC.

The guy I was interested in got together with an old girlfriend of his again, and due to missing payment for the rent again I'm soon to be evicted.

That's Bungaku Shoujo, right? It's a good series. The first book was really interesting, and incidentally focused a lot on Osamu Dazai's novel No Longer Human which is my favourite novel. The second book focused more on... Wuthering Heights, I think it was.
A third book had been translated I think, but I only have the first two myself.

It also got an OVA series and a movie, personally I thought they were pretty good. You should give them a watch if you get the chance. The best idea would probably be to watch the movie before the OVA, since it gets you more familiar with the characters that way instead of throwing you directly into their individual stories right off the bat.
