I think it's sort of an alternate universe type thing, where it's more computer/technology oriented. It's mentioned that Magic has become less prevalent or w/e, but usually Magi can become really good hackers cause they can magically infuse themselves or their souls inside of it, which is why people like Rin are so good/powerful.

I have a hunch that I know what happened.

So Attyroo, I just watched Fam Fan Fan. Some interesting things to note:

- The Exile that's used to destroy Turan is not the same Exile as the one that carried the Sylverna fought with in Last Exile 1.
- When Dio remarks "Oh, so you've returned as well", he's talking about the Exile Al is the key to, and the Exile Claus uses to travel in the official Last Exile manga.
- Kartoffel means potato in German. Kartoffel's main food stuff are potatoes.
- Dio remarks that he was given authority to act as he pleases by "Sophia" and "your Father" (speaking to the Princesses). Therefore, between Last Exile and Last Exile 2, he must have met Sophia.
- Although Ades Federation complains about people returning aboard the Exile to Earth 118 years ago, Dio is still alive and Guild people are not documented to be non-humans.
- According to official sources, the Exile from Last Exile 1 acted as ferry ship between Prester and Earth, further supporting that the Exile named and shown in the new series is not the same vessel, if not only because a ship completely resembling Al's Exile is shown in episode 1.
