Well, I was really just fishing around to see if I could figure out a bit more about some people's personalities here, but that didn't go so well after all.
Certainly, both extremes have their own advantages and disadvantages, and technically speaking neither is "objectively better" depending on the person choosing between them. After all, if the person can utilize the unique advantages that come along with each situation - in the former case using physical worth and materialistic success to get by in life, and in the latter using deep personal connections with others to come across whatever you may need at any time - then either can become "objectively better" than the other.
The latter is simply a more unpredictable case, since human relationships can actually be quite fragile and you just never know when someone's going to stab you in the back for their own gain, as that's just another aspect of our own very human nature. That's why I would also go for the former - it's the more stable and predictable situation, as it doesn't rely on a multitude of vague uncertainties just to maintain the status quo.

>>25398
Well, that's why it was a simple hypothetical situation. A way to get a discussion going, though in retrospect that didn't actually work very well at all.
Not being satisfied with one of two extremes, again, is just human nature. It's in man's blood to want more no matter how much he is given, that's the one driving force that provides him with the motivation necessary to make it through the day and on to the next. Were a man content with what he had, he'd lose all motivation to go further, and his lifestyle would grow stagnant and dull. Like what happened to someone like me, for example.

>>25408
And there it is, the answer I was waiting for. You hit the nail on the head, it's a sad matter of fact that the former situation - a position of wealth and power in the business world - is enough to sway most people and make social connections without much trouble at all. Not only that, but such an amount of wealth can buy whatever one may desire.
The idea that "money can't but happiness" is an outdated one, as in today's world it very much can, so long as it isn't squandered meaninglessly of course. The world simply favours money, and there's no way around that. Generally speaking, the only ones who believe otherwise are either naive or poor, so they delude themselves into thinking that "money isn't everything."

I do see what you mean. You might only have your current situation and past situations to draw from, but none of those approached those extremes. The grass being greener on the other side, for instance, relies on the ignorance you have of actually living that type of life. So it can be seen that it's hard to get an idea of how happy you would be in either case, and therefore it could be wise to withhold from giving a definite answer, if you really considered it.

I also imagine in this case, that friends you only know over the internet nonetheless count. They don't have to be "shallow" connections. So while I have been without "real" friends at many points in my life and didn't mind it at all, and would be willing to sever all ties with people currently in my life at a moment's notice, that is with the definition of real only meaning people I only know in the flesh. All along, I have had friends on the internet.

Many people wouldn't count those as friends, but when it comes to me, there are people who have only known me online and yet known me better than any one person I have physical contact with. So I rely on that. If I had no online connections, I would probably live as a simple anonymous on /jp/. I've thought about it before, and it seems lonely, but you're right, I can't imagine how happy I would be.

As for my position on love, I have experienced having kakakata kataomoi, and I have gotten involved with people because they kakakata kataomoi'd me, without me really returning their feelings. It's alright, and I don't hate it. The idea of mutual love seems nice, but the point is, these feelings are all past tense. There's no way I'd bet any significant portion of my life on those fleeting feelings. And supposing I would, even though I'm quite sure I wouldn't, making that legally binding is like forcing the future you who you expect to be "unfaithful" suffer for their wrongs. It's not their fault if the emotion that was once there is now no longer, and it's only natural as per evolution. So it's wrong to bind them with guilt.

The same goes for your partner.

I, too, believe money can buy happiness. However, it can only buy so much. That's not to say you need things other than money to work with to be happy, but that people are hardwired to become complacent with whatever it is that they have, no matter how little or how much, and only call it happy or sad in retrospect. And that's part of the drive to constantly improve oneself you were talking about.

So it's of course not a linear scale of happiness versus money. There's a limit to how happy you can be at the present.

The conversation has me growing all nostalgic now.
This might seem a bit tangential, but the matter of having "friends" is a strange one to me. There was a time I was the most popular guy around, it would be no exaggeration at all to say that I had easily over 100, possibly even 200 people I could call "friends" - yet at the time, I always only thought of them as acquaintances. These people all considered themselves my "friends," though, so I had more personal connections than I could count.
I wouldn't even have considered myself to be a "popular" guy at the time, it just seemed perfectly natural to me. I'd borrow money and lend money, I'd be invited into a person's house when I had nowhere else to turn, and even once or twice taken other people in myself in the same way. Hell, it was more like a large family than a group of "friends," even if they were all more like strangers from my point of view.

I've lived that very lifestyle, one of said extremes which I mentioned earlier on. Living on zero money at all and surviving day-to-day purely on personal connections and frail "friendships," and sure there have been countless times I've been stabbed in the back. In retrospect I was too naive and forgiving for my own good, on more than one occasion I could easily have wound up in a ditch somewhere, that's the sort of absurd things these "friends" of mine would drag me into.

But now, that lifestyle is a world away from me. It's like I was literally an entirely different person back then. I can't even fathom how I survived so long living like that, when now the only thing that matters to me at all is these silly debates I can have with people online to pass the time, just so that I'm not left staring at a wall for all my waking hours, or cradling a bottle of whisky like it's my only real friend in the world.
Actually, to tell the truth, that bottle really is my only friend at this point. I do consider the people here acquaintances, but nothing more. Simple conversational partners I can talk to about absolutely anything on a whim without fear of being judged or ridiculed - not for the reason that such people wouldn't judge or ridicule me, but for the reason that even if they did it would have no impact on my life whatsoever. Were these people my "friends" though, that would all change. Being judged by such people would actually have some effect on me if I were to call them my friends, which would lead to me not being able to be nearly as blunt and open with them as I'd like, and in the end it would just be a generally unfavourable situation.

Friends are the kind of people I'd need to be on guard against, I feel. Strangers and acquaintances, however, I can be as open and direct with as I like, since whatever they say or do towards me won't have any significant impact on me at all. I think it's better that way, that's why I've tried to keep such a suitable distance between myself and everybody else this whole time. It's more comfortable for me to be difficult and distant, I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Actually, I rarely get like this these days. Talking at length like this is something I've refrained from doing on here since my opinion always seems to be at odds with that of just about everyone else here, so there's little common ground to actually discuss these kinds of things on.

As for tonight, I'm just in a bit of a strange mood. Maybe I've been up for too long, maybe I've had a little too much to drink, or maybe I'm just rambling on about the past for the hell of it. Who knows, right?

Certainly, I can sympathize with Kaiji in the image. Entering into relationships with people where they are in a position to backstab you is not something I tend to do. For the most part, I move on and leave people behind who considered me a friend, when I never asked it of them.

'Friend' means different things to different people. You could have plenty of people with which you share a connection strong enough that some others would consider 'friendship,' while you yourself just consider it being acquainted.

In the first place, the average human mind has a limit on the number of acquaintances it can really have, and this has dictated the size of clans, families, companies, as well as their level of subdivision. It's something like a couple hundred, but closer connections only exist in maybe a tenth of that group. Some people might call all those two hundred friends. Others might only call the fraction friends. Others still might consider themselves friends with none of them. 'Friend' is a pretty vague label.

The difference in my mind between my friends and acquaintances is also pretty vague. And I'm embarrassed to think of people as friends if they don't think of me as such, so I don't have a definitive list of who is and who is not a friend. Nor would I discuss it if I did.

Though, thankfully even the 3.5 DM I played with was sane enough to use point buy instead.

Well, obviously that's what the rules prevent. I can see the appeal of point-buy but there's always more than one person that decides to just abuse it and go for the most broken character that they can think of. Over course the DM is allowing it too though.

Point buys hardly make something broken. Stat arrays hardly make something broken. But if you rolled higher than what the stat array would give you, isn't that broken?

Counterpoint: there is the same opportunity for creating a "broken" character with randomized stats, but player choice is removed from the equation.

Player choice is still in the equation on both accounts. The only way that you'll be 'forced' to play with such a character is if you something manage to get the luck of gods and roll the max one every stat possible.

Should probably come up with the servant stats being modified by X rules, since we're supposed to start today.
>> No. 25503 edit
>>25502

Oh, those are done, just not in the pdf yet.

'If a master has more than 35 magic circuits, a servant's lowest stat is raised by one rank. If a master has more than 45 magic circuits, a servant's two lowest stats are raised by one rank. In the case of a tie, will go to the more class-appropriate stat.

If a master has fewer than 20 magic circuits, the servant's highest stat will be dropped by one rank. In the case of a tie, the one less-appropriate to class will be dropped.'
