They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Let us assume that someone is on the whole generally unlikeable. When that someone is around, then, people grow slowly less fond of them as they come to realize the sort of person they are. If we take what people say to be truth, then this kind of person has an option available to them - they simply need to be absent for long enough to neutralize any dislike they have built up. Perhaps this person would be forced to live a rather sporadic existence, but that is the price at which they buy happiness.
