The thing about LoL being more popular, is because it's free, more casual, and not as overwhelming (in LoL most of the time it takes you a while to kill someone, most of the time), and there's bots to practice against and such. Granted, there's no replay system, not too many maps (though it's the same for HoN), no spectating of matches (for even public games, but they're working on that), and a tad bit better ranked system.
As for the advertising, free game (which has a cash shop system for heroes), even for a small company (I don't really know if Riot is small, but I'd consider S2 fairly small.), is easier, but then again, there's the factor of free, good, online/multiplayer game, choose 2, etc. S2 hasn't put much effort when the game came out to advertise it much either, and most of the time it's word of mouth, or free weekends or something.
As for the community, it could be said of all 3, I thought the community in LoL was a lot worse than HoN's, Dota I have little to no experience with, but they can all be as worse as the other, probably. S2 has been working to try and make the community better lately, namely on the forums, though. (And there IS a report function in game for problem players who just non stop cause trouble, harass other players, etc, though if it's over VOIP, half the time they can't do anything as it's not on replays, but still.)
S2 has a lot of big changes in store (like for their matchmaking system among other things), which will hopefully make things for the better
