Wouldn't show up in a regular class.

I have the MC, who isn't interested in interacting with his classmates at the start of the year, and becomes bullied when he rejects others' attempts to befriend him.

I have the main antagonist, who likes picking on the MC but of course has DEEP UNDERLYING PERSONALITY (not really).

I have the bro of bros who will not actually be a bro but still hang out with main antagonist.

The teacher who sees the problems but doesn't know how to fix them.

And the obligatory love interest who isn't an actual love interest.

I just feel like I need one more castmember to give the story more oomph. Some comedy. SERIOUS COMEDY.

Somebody who tries to cheer the hero up by throwing around cheesy lines and being melodramatic? Somebody who takes fiction too seriously in any case.

Of course, if he can't have friends, then have another character be the straight man to this person. Who may spout unusual euphemisms, metaphors, and figures of speech that make little to no sense, and is hyperactive.

So get this. The character tries to look down on the bullies because he sees their bullying only as an expression of the frustration they feel at not being able to fulfill their evolutionary need for social closeness. He's always trying to convert the MC to a very radical way of thinking. Not only does he not want friends, he thinks having friends makes you an unacceptable person (despite being the MC's friend). When he tries to convert the MC, he may seem intelligent on the surface, but he's always using malapropisms and in the end his logic makes sense to nobody. This leads to very comic situations where his attempts have the opposite affect.

To follow up, let me say that in my opinion, "realistic" characters are boring. I don't think most people want to read about real people.

Shooting for realism is, I believe, the wrong way to go. That just creates a dull story few are interested in. No, what you want is verisimilitude, or the feeling that what is happening in the story is real. That the actions of the characters make sense in the context of who they are and the world they exist in.

Because the real world is dull compared to the unlimited realm of fantasy.

This story begins on June 21st, first day of summer.

The main character is a boy in his early twenties. Introverted; tall; wears glasses; etc. He wakes up in a hospital after a car accident to

find that a friend from overseas had not only come over to visit him when he was comatose (which lasted for about a month), but she had

actually moved somewhere close by enough that they could hang out together. He gets out of the hospital and the rest of it is a romantic

comedy of awkward proportions that spans several months and acts as blatant wish fulfillment.

Except it isn't. Because things don't fit together. Because stuff doesn't make sense. Because everything seems too perfect. Because everyone

agrees with him. Because nothing but good things happen to him. Because each day leaves him with large gaps in his memory of what happened,

as though he were living in a montage. And because there's just no explaining such a drastic decision to come live right by him. How did she

know how to find him? How did she know he was in an accident? How did she manage to buy a house so close by? Last time he checked, there

weren't any houses for sale.

When he starts investigating these things and asking questions, gradually the sugary sweet world around him begins to lose its cheerfulness.

Bad things happen. He nearly gets hit by a car again, while inside his own house no less. The college he attends kicks him out for failing

too many classes, when he was sure he'd passed the ones in question. His cat starts being hostile towards him. His parents then kick him out

of his house. He feels sick and lethargic. And through all this, his friend is unchanged, but is gravely concerned.

He presses her for answers to his questions, and she can't give him any such answers. The reasoning she gives is weak and faulty, and he asks

her what is happening. She can't tell him, because she doesn't know what he's talking about. On a whim, he pinches himself, and doesn't feel

a thing. So that must mean he's dreaming. He sets out to figure out how to wake himself up, the girl actually helping him out for the sake of

his happiness, or something corny like that, even though she'd cease to exist if he woke up or whatever. It's probably his own selfish

desires forcing her representation to act that way anyhow. Meanwhile the world is turning into a wintery hellscape around them as this

reality is gradually rent asunder by the constant denial of its existence. The snow is on fire, frickin' tornados and floods and, heck, a meteor storm. THE DESTRUCTION OF UNREALITY ITSELF!!1

Out of nowhere a hole opens up beneath his friend's feet, sending her tumbling into the void. At least it would, if the main character hadn't

decided to save his imaginary friend from plummeting to their death by grabbing hold of them and hauling them out. But wait! Now the hole's

getting bigger and they've both fallen in! And they're tumbling into oblivion, and there are apologies about feeling inadequate on both

sides, reassurances everywhere, and main character guy vows to wake up through sheer manly hot-blooded determination so that maybe, just

maybe he could make those nice things that happened a reality. And everything fades to white.

Cut back to the hospital, and main character is a bloody mess. He did not die peacefully in his sleep. He was in the coma for only a short

while, but his condition quickly deteroirated because loldrama. His family's there to mourn him, he left behind no real legacy and will

quickly be forgotten, and the guy who hit him got out thanks to being stinking rich and having good lawyers. Senseless waste of human life,

funeral is next week, free buffet for all.

And none of his friends who didn't live near him ever found out what happened to him, and assumed he left without a trace because he was sick

of them.

This story ends on June 22nd. The moral of the story? The will to live, heroic willpower, hot-bloodedness, call it what you like. It's not

enough to overcome the failure of a few organs and severe blood loss. He didn't even live for more than a day after getting hit. Take that,

author self-insert.

And nothing of value was lost. The end.

SO EDGYYYYYYYY

Yes. Now, there's a reason that cliches and caricatures are so popular and widely used. You can take the easy way out and say that it's because most writers are talentless hacks who don't know how to make good characters, but I don't care for taking the easy way out. I say it's because those things naturally appeal to us. Most people prefer to read about those things than "realistic" characters because realistic characters aren't interesting.

With that said, there should be good and bad ways to use them. I believe, ideally, we should use a "not-realistic" character in such a way that the reader believes they are realistic--or rather, natural. Thus, verisimilitude.

Well, let's see. I know a lot of people don't like Renton or Eureka's kids in Eureka seveN. They find them annoying. I think this is because they were "too realistic," or rather, they acted too much like kids their age SHOULD act (at least at the beginning of the story). I could argue why this is the case but that would take too long and I like the characters all right, but I wouldn't rate them among my favorites.

On the other hand, we have people like Simon and Kamina, put in similar extraordinary circumstances, and act in an extraordinary manner. These characters tend to be more well-liked, and more memorable.

Also, I think the story is stupid. Sure, the human spirit isn't going to save you from irreparable damage to the major organs, but I still stand by the belief that with hard work and perseverance a person can do almost anything, and I won't let any cynics tell me otherwise.

For the record, most sizes are fine with me, unless they're disproportionately huge.

But that's just getting more off of topic here...
I meant flat as in character personality flat.
Not that kind of flat...

Well, I guess the character doesn't have to be flat to be appeal to the audience. Just not too realistic, according to Rin.

Realistic characters aren't as interesting, you see. If you watched a Slice-of-Life anime about a completely ordinary guy who went to college and had ordinary friends and did ordinary things, most people wouldn't find that too interesting.
See, that's why Slice-of-Life anime are more often than not mixed with another genre, usually comedy, sometimes drama. By over-exaggerating certain elements of ordinary life, it becomes much more interesting to watch. If the characters are too "lifelike" then it's suddenly not as interesting.

See shows like Cromartie, Bartender, Aria, etc. Replace the characters and settings with completely ordinary ones and the shows lose a lot of their appeal. I mean, who wants to watch a show about ordinary delinquents standing around smoking or punching each other in the face? Who wants to see an ordinary bartender just stand and make drinks all day? Who wants to watch ordinary girls row boats in Venice all day? It's by adding these unrealistic qualities to the characters that they become interesting to watch in the first place, within reason of course.

You're confusing "realistic" for "without plot".

What I meant were believable characters whose actions and the motivations thereto can be related to on a logical and emotional level as being people that could exist within this world as much as the written world, while observing enough creative licence to make certain aspects of the character expressed more precisely than is often the case in real life interactions.

Realistic does not always mean "lol no plot, here are two girls eating snowcones".

This doesn't change whether or not it's dull dredge that results or not, but the presentation of "realistic" characters as being characters taken directly from real life situations and inserted into real life day-to-day situations with no creative licence whatsoever is silly.

Main point is that real characters who people relate to too much are boring, I guess... or something like that~
