Finally, just an hour away from the nearest city, the emerald dragon yelps, "There! It's over there!" and dives off the side of the ship. It furiously flaps its wings over to a large yet completely ordinary looking rock a few hundred feet away. The party drops anchor and returns to dry land again, Yagi staying behind for a few minutes to inventively use whatever resources he can to keep the ship from being taken in the meantime.

"O-okay, if I did this right, then..." Errol gives no indication as to what he did, but he stumbles on his stubby legs through the solid rock as though it weren't even there. "C-come on! And, um, don't go too far ahead!" The dragon warns, the adventurers drawn through. As soon as they go through the illusory obstacle, they find themselve in yet another cavern, this one of polished crystal. Fortunately, there is illumination from a convenient wall light. The dragon is a few feet away, pecking at the nearby wall.

Again, Errol warns,
"P-p-please wait until I, um, find the passage mommy uses. The other way's full of... Of really bad things! And traps!"

You can make a Perception check to try and find this secret passage or to see if there are indeed traps ahead. Be warned that this is a Hard DC a few levels above what you're used to.

Taking the little dragon's word for it, Lia tries to look around for signs of the secret passage or traps.

Perception : As the dragon indicated, there is a part where the floor seems loose to the south. The gap is almost seamless, and would be almost impossible to spot without knowing what you're looking for. The same goes for a sequence of indentations in the wall, just to the left of where the dragon was looking. There's an opening beneath the wall, where dirt seems to have gathered.

The dragon soon finds the trick with Lia's help, and pecks at the indentations in a seemingly random order. After the rhythmic tapping ends, Errol grunts and kicks at the wall with its stubby leg.

With a loud creak, the wall swings back, and another well lit room appears. At one end is a large stone archway, with a door inside. And inset into the door is some kind of relief. But the most defining feature of the room is a small spray of blood on the ground, which sends Errol panicking.

"No no no no no no!" he screams, scrambling towards the scene of violence, "Mommy's hurt! What happened to mommy?!"

There's not very much blood here... the wound couldn't have been too bad, Kadol surmises upon first glance at the scene. "Hold on for a moment, young one..." Taking her eveburning torch in hand, Kadol steps out into the chamber to try and get a better view of the area.

Errol sniffs and continues sobbing gently as Kadol steps in. The chamber is remarkably barren. There's nothing to be found beyond what was already seen. The only thing noticeable up close are the details of the relief on the door, to which the dragon murmurs, "Muh, mommy always had a, a, a -sniff- special lock on the door, case bad people found the secret spot. It'sa -sniff- puzzle thing, but she never told me how to solve 'em, jus' that you touch the things to make more... And the pictures and numbers gotta match. And now... Now..." The wyrmling resumes moaning.

The "puzzle" has a pair of grids on it with glowing squares set into the stone. Above them float a "0" and a "4", and a pair of arrows. The 4 is in red, and the picture below it looks more "complete" than the one on the left.

As soon as Kadol pushes the arrow, the squares shift on their own, forming an entirely different pattern that's noticeably bigger than the other one. The squares on the left panel stop glowing and no amount of pressing on the grid makes any of them change.

"Doesn't taste good."

One again the squares shift, some disappearing, some filling in. It doesn't seem to have a pattern to casual observer, but in reality...

Insight : From what you can tell, each square has two states : 'live', or yellow, and 'dead', or grey. When the arrow is pressed and it advances a number, then, depending on the number of squares adjacent to each other, a square may 'live' or it may 'die'.

Kadol nods, and nods again, then says, "The conditions seem to be... whenever an illuminated square has four or more illuminated yellow squares, these squares disappear when the arrow is pressed. If a blank square has exactly three illuminated squares adjacent, then that square becomes illuminated when the arrow is pressed. Finally, a square needs two or more adjacent squares to remain illuminated."

After inputting a shape that vaguely resembles a three-horned dragon, Kadol pushes the arrow to the right. One, two, three, four times the picture shifts, the last one matching the one on the right perfectly. A loud click echos through the room, Errol looking anxiously at the door. The dragon's warning is just in time, as a ghostly snake's head emerges from the crude portrait. Kadol falls back just out of its reach as it snaps its jaws around where she had been a moment ago. The apparition disappears upon failing its duty, Errol whimpering in distress.

The door suddenly flings itself open, which would have been painful for anyone standing in front of it. Where there was silence before, there is now crazed giggling as a pair of flying skeletons charge through the opening. One of the cackling damned charges Kadol and swipes at her with its claw, the gash it creates briefly stinging with a blackened flame. The other tries to do the same to the dragon, but its target completely evades the attack.

From further in the chamber, a drawling voice booms,
"So these are the intruders, hmm? This simply will not do," as shuffling footsteps echo through the cavern.

A well aimed shot from the hunter takes out one of the skeletons. The creature hits the ground and crumbles into a heap of bones, but another soon takes its place, tearing into Errol with its claws. Far off in the distance, a sound of bones crunching can be heard, followed by more cackling laughter.

To the horror of the adventurers, the skeletal beast that had been defeated reattaches its bones and stands back up as though nothing happened. Giggling madly, the winged horror swipes at the dragon again, who yelps in pain, while a fourth one charges out of the darkness and leaves Fays with a nasty wound. The one that stood back up teams up with another that shifts into position to bring the pain to the bard. Fays is nearing death.

While Fays' makes a brave effort, his shot fires erratically and misses its target. One of the other winged horrors shifts into a better position, then lets out a scream as it rushes Yagi Yuu. Its claws rip into a weak part of the armor, the gash it leaves behind stinging hotly for a moment.

From somewhere in the darkness, the sound of bones hitting the ground echoes, followed by more mad laughter. There is a faint retching sound heard as a glob of something green hits Rock in the back, burning and bubbling at his skin. The noxious fumes make the barbarian feels somewhat nauseous. Whatever had made that shot disappears into the darkness without the slightest trace

"We'll save tha dragon from tha clutches o' tha vile undead!" Kadol announces in a firm voice, slowly pointing her staff at the undead horrors grouped up before her. She drops her everburning torch, and grips her staff tightly with both hands before beginning to invoke a powerful prayer.

"Dust tae dust!" she cries out, releasing a short, but brilliant blast of radiant energy that washes over the gathered creatures. However, her allies are spared Kadol's divine wrath, while the horrors are not as lucky. Nodding, Kadol takes her staff in one hand once more, and moves out into the chamber before striking a sundrod from her bag of holding, illuminating the chamber. "Harm not tha dragon, comrades. It has done us no wrong. We must, however, cleanse tha world o' these wretched abominations!"

Kadol's stave glows with an intense light that makes the winged horrors shriek in terror. One by one they crumble to dust, the wyrmling shaking the bone dust off itself. Striding into the chamber with greater illumination, Kadol reveals much that couldn't be seen before. Besides the bookshelf, broken table, scattered paper, and heavy iron door, there's also another cultist to the east of her position, who snarls at them in a rasping voice, "You should not have interfered with our errand. Now you'll just be a ssssssnack for our pet." as it gestures to the giant creature behind him. Flying several feet of the ground is some sort of insect the size of a grizzly bear, its skin a deathly shade of green. It likely has wings on its back, as there is something vibrating in the air where said wings should be, yet its flight is impossibly quiet. A bulbous sac grows out of its back, several lumps forming on it, while greenish fluids drip from tears in the sac.

The thing's mandibles twitch when exposed to the light, opening its mouth wide and shrieking as it drools in hunger.

Kadol's Shining Symbol hits all targets and kills the winged horrors. They also take a -2 penalty to attack rolls until the end of their next turns.

Now with a path finally clear and no targets near allies obscuring her fire, Lia rushes into the room with Kadol, and seeing the enemy before them, obscures herself and Kadol with some strange dark mist, which looks fairly normal to allies, but obscuring the view of any enemies. Lia blankets the area in a thick mist that is almost impossible for the monsters to see through. From inside a hail of arrows rains down on her enemies, coating them in sticky webbing. The giant insect avoids it easily, but the rest aren't so lucky, as the last of the winged horrors crumple into a heap of bones. The necromancer fly don't seem particularly bothered by the webbing, though.

As if to prove it, the necromancer snaps its bony digits, the skeletal remains of its comrades standing tall again. It sneers at the adventurers, taunting them,
"Your effortsssss are meaninglessssss, filthy wormsssss!" The necromancer holds its staff high above its head, bellowing, "Be conssssumed by the darknessss!" before strike it on the ground with a loud crack, then steps away. The ground near Lia grows blackened, spreading out in a spiralling shape beneath Kadol's and Rock's feet. Then, as though held by an invisible force, the three suddenly feel much weaker as their vitality is ripped from their bodies, being pulled towards the center of the spiraling force as it eats away at their lives.

Likewise, the proned cultist just cackles loudly, sending a swirling purple bolt at Rock that leaves him feeling very frail and very injured. It crawls a few squares away, putting even more distance between itself and those trapped in the dark zone. One of the winged horrors that had not been brought down yet takes to the air and soars across the battlefield. Laughing at the adventurers caught in the deadly zone, it divebombs at Walala with its claws, but the shardmind isn't even scratched.

Errol grows restless and shifts away from the skeleton, then flaps its stubby wings furiously as it dashes across the room. The tiny dragon starts bawling incoherently as it heads for its mother.

Things don't look so good right now.

Fays plays a hot-blooded melody that makes the necromancer lose focus. It stumbles forward into Yagi, who lands a clean hit on it and leaves the cultist looking pretty beat up and flat on the ground. The cunning bard follows up with an inspiring call to battle that burns at Jasker's mind, though the devil resists some of it. He gives Fays a strange look, then smiles a sinister, knowing smile before disappearing, as though a blanket of transparency was wrapped around him.

The skeleton growls at the fly, hissing its orders in frustration, "Don't jusssst sssssit there! Desssstroy them!" [i]In response, one of the pustules on the insect's back bursts and another winged horror flies out, primed to fight. The corpsespawn fly sees Yagi as a nuisance and bites down hard with its jaws, poisoning the knight. Another pustule ruptures, leaving the fly a little bit tired but still able to fly out of Yagi's reach. To further exacerbate the goathead's condition, he and Kadol are hit by poisonous bile that it spits at the both of them, gnashing its teeth as it hovers above them.

A hail of arrows from within the mist puts the necromancer and its cohort out of commission, leaving them crumpled on the ground in a bony heap. A second shot makes the corpsespawn fly's wings and legs lock up before teleporting it to ground level. The fly starts sweating blood, chittering angrily at its aggressors. Lia changes her stance and gives Kadol cover under the cloud she summoned, then shifts back into the concealing mist.

One of the remaining winged horrors flies around Walala and tries to claw at her, but only manages to graze her. Her actions do feel a bit sluggish now, though.

Lia hits the Corpsespawn Fly, Necromancer 2, and Winged Horror 8 with Rapid Shot, killing the last two, dispelling the zone, and inflicting 14 damage to the Corpsespawn Fly (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3237178/ and http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3237181/)

Walala readies her crossbow, and the winged horror raises its arm to strike. A portal opens up from Kadol's armor and in front of the artificer, where an enchanted bolt is shot at the fly. Rock's wounds are healed by her healing infusion, and she hurls a string of barbed wire that wraps around the fly and digs into its flesh.

Yagi shakes off his dazing condition and grounds the fly with a solid hit. Another sword slice is all that it takes to put the thing out of its misery, covering the ground in its vile bile. The knight moves to menace a nearby winged horror and tries to locate Jasker, but the head-covering helmet makes it extremely difficult to do so. He does shrug off the poison afflicting him at least.

Jasker goes completely silent and disappears from everyone's perception, then reappears before those grouped together with a psychic assault on their minds. In their minds, they can see themselves with wealth, power, whatever their heart desires as its insidious voice whispers to them, "Let's not fight, you silly interlopers. Myself and master Wiseman can give you anything you want. And all you have to do... Is kill each other. That's not so hard, is it?" Lost in their fantasies, Jasker mesmerizes the knight again with a display of fire, then hurls its tome into the fog. A solid hit completely disables Lia as the book flaps back into the impish creature's hands.

Rock hits Jasker with his gouge like a golf club, sending the devil flying into the nearby winged horror. It smashes it to bits on impact, and Jasker falls flat on its face. Rock follows up with a rending blow from his weapon that makes Jasker howl in pain, growling, "You stupid brute! How dare you interrupt me!" The remaining winged horrors try to harass the injured Fays, but their claw swipes miss, and Jasker is left steaming in anger.

Rock's Brutal Slam hits for 24 damage, and pushes Jasker 2 squares and deals damage to Winged Horror 9, killing it. Jasker falls prone, and Rock regains 5 HP from Stirring Shout.
Rock spends an action point! Rock charges with Howling Strike for 28 damage against Jasker, and uses the Vanguard Weapon's power to grant all allies a +1 bonus to attack rolls until the start of his next turn. Rock regains 5 HP from Stirring Shout.
Usage of a daily item power triggers Walala's Arcane Rejuvenation, and Rock gains 8 THPs

Kadol raises her staff high, and releases a torrent of divine energy that blasts the area directly before her, friend and foe alike. Jasker and Kadol's allies merely see a flash of light, but the undead trapped within the blast wither and turn to dust before her radiance.

Slowly lowering her staff, Kadol moves to the south and cries out in defiance, "Yer master's nothin' 'fore my god, devil. Think again before ye attempt tae tempt tha devout!" As an afterthought, the invoker calls upon her divine power to guide Fays out of harm's way.

At Walala's command, an eye-like construct forms near Jasker, staring at him intently. Yagi manages to shake off his dazing with assistance from Kadol, and charges Jasker. His swing goes wild and it looks as though he might miss, but he lands a solid slash across his neck like a guillotine. The eye responds by zapping Jasker with a bolt of energy.

Jasker wobbles to his feet and dusts himself off, then tries to bring his tome down on Yagi with bone-crushing force. The knight's armor easily deflects the blow, and Jasker finally grasps the gravity of the situation he's in. He laughs nervously and tries to look non-threatening as he speaks,

"Now what brings you all the way out here, besides delivering my child back to me?" Errol has climbed onto his mother's back and passed out in exhaustion, the stress from earlier overwhelming him.

It doesn't sound like they're gonna leave us alone until we put down tha boss, though..."

Jasker has a nicely tailored suit on himself, but that's about it.

The dragon reaches behind itself and pulls a large tome out with its claws. Flipping it open, it remarks,
"As I thought... If you refer to the Fraternity of Tharos, then the 'boss' is in fact this 'Wiseman' figure." The book slams shut with a loud thud, the emerald dragon continuing, "Convenient."

Striking a' this 'Wiseman' seems tae be a prudent way tae strike a' tha controlling cult." The dwarf turns her gaze to the statue, and says, "Ye say tha statue be his phylactery, aye?"

Kadol : A mortal becomes a lich by performing a dark and terrible ritual. In this ritual the mortal dies, but rises again as an undead creature. Most liches are wizards or warlocks, but even clerics can follow this dark path. To become a lich. a spellcaster must be devoted to evil and adept at performing unspeakable acts of violence. Few spellcasters have a shred of morality remaining after their transformations into liches. The process of attaining lichdom bends the mortal mind in unnatural and crippling ways. Many liches rise up insane, but even they enact cunning plans; they just do so for incomprehensible reasons.
A lich’s life force is bound up in a magic phylactery, which typically takes the form of a fist-sized metal box containing strips of parchment on which magical phrases have been written. If you destroy a lich, its spirit returns to its phylactery. Its body reforms within 10 days at the location of the phylactery unless you also destroy the phylactery. Most liches hide their phylacteries in secret (and well-guarded) vaults, sometimes on other planes. If its phylactery is destroyed, the lich can still create a new one. Only by destroying both can a lich be eradicated.

"Yes," the dragon curtly replies, "That is its phylactery, though destroying it will do no good so long as he walks this earth. Even after this incident, I lack the power and the motivation to take on this Wiseman figure. I only record history; I do not make it."

We'll take him down fer good this time. And wit' tha phylactery'n yer grasp, it'll be easy enuff tae finish 'em when we destroy tha body." The invoker nods sagely, and propoes, "If we go destroy tha lich, could ye smash tha phylactery?"

The dragon consults her tome once more, stating plainly, "Atop a tall citadel in New Sarshel, one with no windows to let any light in. Though its gray exterior is quite bland, I am completely certain that this is where he is currently." The dragon's giant brow creases in thought, and it regards the group again, "If I recall correctly, there was a group that was chased out of that city several days ago. That wouldn't happen to be you, would it?"

She shakes her head, "Actually, it does not matter. What does matter is that getting back there would be quite a hassle under normal circumstances. Other than the long trek, there are also agents of the fraternity prowling the countryside, yes?"

Despite being half-conscious for the past few minutes, Walala heard most of the conversation. "You're weird," she transmits telepathically, before continuing on about how weird it is that a lich is controlling demons. See this? She motions the sign language for "I'm about to show you something in your head" and then shows the dragon an image of a big scary demon from beyond. This is a demon. She then unfolds an image of a bony old man, his sinew separating from his muscle and faint currents of magic wafting off his body. That's a lich. Wait, no. A dusty orb. THAT'S a lich.

The emerald dragon groans, "Oh, if only that were the case, but the truth is far worse. To understand that, though, you must know that, in life, this 'Wiseman' fellow was supposedly a warlock of great power and infamy. He pledged to various entities his fealty and a piece of his soul in exchange for power, then went behind their backs and made similar pledges with other patrons. Thus, when the time came to fulfill his part of the bargain, Wiseman wouldn't have any of it. Rather, he tried to take the power of his patrons for himself. One of which was a demon lord whose name was lost to history, consumed by Wiseman's gluttony for power. And when he gained this power, he gained dominion over those who served under him, commanding a formidable force of demon hosts."

Leaving the story hanging, the dragon adds, "The devil was likely a familiar of sorts. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the last you'd see of him. Those dwarfs you mention, whomever they might be, likely entered a similar pact with Wiseman in exchange for something. And the undead... Well, he is a lich, is he not?"

In the meantime, I will grant you the privilege of reading the records if you so choose, but please put them back where you found them when you're done."

Carefully the creature moves so as not to dislodge Errol from her back. She steps around the debris surrounding the iron door and effortlessly pushes it open. Stepping into the darkness beyond, the heavy door swings shut behind her, the sound echoing through the chamber.

It isn't long before the heavy iron door is thrown open again. The emerald dragon beckons the group inside to a fairly small room, its only defining features several large comforters spread around haphazardly and a dimly glowing wall light of polished crystal, no brighter than a night light.

"I don't normally entertain guests," the dragon states plainly, "So this is all I can offer under short notice. Try to make the best of it while I prepare for tomorrow." And without waiting for any objections, she returns to the main chamber and slams the door shut.

Right now you may take an extended rest. As long as you sleep a minimum of six hours before you set out tomorrow, you gain the benefits of an extended rest. This includes regaining all encounter powers, daily powers, hit points, healing surges, and item powers. In addition, you gain 1 action point.
