Witches and magic cannot possibly exist. Any belief in the contrary is simply nonsense. Time and time again, things such as witches and their spells have been shown to be nothing more than trickery performed by human hands, if not simply misattributing the cause to something arcane like the will of the gods. Therefore, it is inconceivable to believe that witches and magic exist.
Ushiromiya Battler did not believe in witches. How could he believe otherwise? Things such as magic and witches could not possibly exist, and there was no reason for him to think they did.
Witches simply could not exist. Magic simply could not exist. This is what Battler adamantly believed, and it is important to establish this. If he took every sleight of hand as a display of power beyond human comprehension, then this tale could be dismissed as a prank played upon him by a human being with great resourcefulness and ingenuity, something of which there was no shortage of within his family.

But even more so than his inability to acknowledge witches and magic, it is his ability to hold a grudge that is at the core of this tale, and Battler held a grudge like an old miser held every cent they could get their hands on. His mother’s death five years ago was hastily by his father’s remarriage to an old paramour, who soon after bore a child. It is understandable that Battler was outraged and offended by this, and wanted nothing to do with them. And in his rashness, he cut off all ties with the Ushiromiya family and moved in with his mother’s parents, who only added fuel to the fire.
In fact, at this very moment, Battler is arguing with his estranged father over the phone about joining them for Christmas dinner, as a family.
“I told you a million times, I’m not joining you guys for anything, you old bastard! You married your mistress and had a daughter with her less than nine months after Mother died, and you expect me to go along with it?” The boy was not happy, to say the least.
