Once the party passes through the gates, the boat slowly arcs back north towards the river's mouth, and you have a slightly bumpy ride as your automated magical rivercraft transitions from the open sea to the great Surbin river. The climate is temperate, and the surroundings are fairly open, with scatterings of trees here and there as you continue north without much incident of note.

It takes five days to pass through an unusually sandy passage, with the pseudo-shaman sleeping in the day and keeping watch whenever the ship stops at dusk to make camp, and then begins to glow brightly at dawn when it's ready to head off again. Whenever the boat stops, it moves over to shore and deploys a small platform which folds from the side of the hull, and a chain harpoon-like construction darts out and fixes itself firmly to the ground, to prevent any odd currents from pulling the boat away. The river itself has been calm the whole way, however, and quiet. Gourmert will entertain you with whatever stories he has of his journeys around northwest Faerun, particularly focusing on the different local foods. He will also offer to share a bit of food from his pack if asked, though you all expend at least four trail rations along the way*. You notice the terrain has become steadily more swamp-like and marshy as you leave the somewhat deserted areas, and the trees hang low and droop as if over-saturated with water.

*If you want to avoid spending trail rations, you may take one Nature check per day (so five total). DC15 will find food/water for yourself, DC25 will for up to five people. Each of you may make individual checks. Foraging may include looking around while camped, hunting, fishing, or other reasonable methods. You don't have to worry about water, being on a river and all. Brief pause here for foraging opportunities, then we'll move onto the good stuff.

While keeping watch, the shaman catches what fish she can from the river, with her companions convincing the fish spirits to be caught and eaten.

Five foraging checks http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3020094/

...does critical foraging count as two days' worth of food?

- Speak with Spirits: +4 bonus to nature.
- Minor Creation: create a Hunter's Kit (here, in the form of fishing equipment. I thought it'd fit better than a Dowsing Rod). +2 to nature checks for foraging.
- Both Speak with Spirits and Minor Creation are encounter powers, so it should be okay to use both for foraging every day, right?
- It's assumed that some of the others helped with Aid Another, though I didn't add any of the bonuses to the rolls ... yet.

Thankfully, the shaman is able to catch enough fish and forage for enough edible plants with the help of the half-orc ranger and her spirits such that the adventuring party does not have to resort to their trail rations. The fish here are oddly sweet, and the berries are a bit bitter, but not poisonous.

It's the sixth night on the river, while the shaman is idly cleaning some fish by the fire and the rest of the travelers are asleep near the shore that "Bernkastel" hears the unmistakable sound of something approaching from the nearby woods. The area where you have camped is somewhat marshy and damp, and the trees hang low but remain thick. She rises from the fire, and by now can make out the sounds of what appears to be several creatures approaching from the north and west.

"Bernkastel" can take an action. She can't see any enemies yet, and doesn't know where they are, other than a vague sense of an approach from the northwest. Everyone else is still asleep. I'll be fair and say that since you're sleeping in dangerous territory that you have your armor equipped, but your shield and weapon will be resting nearby and need to be pulled out. You should probably also use a free action to alert the others and wake them up.

Gourmert Goldsmith springs from his bed suddenly, and quickly pulls out his spork and shield. "Wazzat? Who's there?!

As if on cue, a lizard-like humanoid carrying a crude wooden shield and a wooden spear with a stone tip charges from the western treeline. This lizardfolk is wearing little more than feathers and decorative beads, and appears a swift and sturdy hunter. It darts towards the camp swiftly.

Another lizardfolk emerges from the northern trees. This one is armed with a spiked club and carries a turtle shell shield, aiming directly for the half-orc who is still drowsily rising from his slumber. However, its club strike misses Sureiya quite badly, though the half-orc feels threatened by the raider's presence. Trying to shift away might not be a good idea.

Drawing a weapon is a minor action. Standing from prone is a move action. Equipping a shield is a standard action. These are relevant for most of you right now, as none of you save Bernkastel have had time to equip yourselves.
Information on the lizardfolk can be obtained with a Nature skill check as a free action.

If the lizardfolk understand or are interested in Torinn's attempts at diplomacy, they aren't showing it.

Bernkastel: (Nature) These is clearly a lizardfolk raiding party of some sort. Lizardfolk favor moist climates, and can occasionally even be found in flooded cavern systems. Lizardfolk sometimes engage in trade with humanoids they trust for finished goods, but those that carry out hostile raids against humanoids are never interested in trade.
Lizardfolk society is based heavily on their worship of powerful natural beings (such as dragons, or even a powerful adventurer or demon that slays their lizard king), or natural spirits rather than actual deities. They are vicious hunters who are known to occasionally prey on humanoids, or capture them as sacrifices.
As for these lizardfolk in particular, the raiders are stalwart soldiers that harshly punish foes that attempt to shift away from their presence. When wounded, they can also swiftly trip up nearby enemies.
The hunters are swift skirmishers that rely on moving and attacking with their spears. When wounded, they can lash out with their tail for an additional attack.

The pseudo-shaman conjures a sword in the half-orc's hand, then attempts to coerce one of the nearby lizardfolk into attacking its ally with psychic power, but its mind proves too resilient. With little else to do, "Bernkastel" calls her spirit companions into the fray.

Two more greenscales leap from the trees, a soldier striking the prone dragonborn soundly with its club, and a hunter attempting to skewer the dwarf with its spear but missing rather dramatically. However, the ground shakes as a hulking, black-scaled monster of a lizardfolk rushes into the battle. It wields a greatclub almost as large as a human child, but no armor other than some ceremonial beads around its neck. It smashes its massive club into the dragonborn with great reach, and the resulting blow sends Torinn rolling through the marshy ground and bleeding profusely.

Bernkastel: (Nature) A blackscale lizardfolk is larger and stronger than the greenscales, wielding a massive greatclub with superior reach. When wounded, it lashes out with a savage bite in addition to its other attacks. In addition, when it is attacked, it has a tendency to retaliate with a large sweep of its tail, knocking nearby enemies prone.

Bernkastel uses minor creation to give Sureiya a mundane bastard sword in his off-hand.
Bernkastel's betrayl misses greenscale raider.
Greenscale raider 2's club hits Torinn for 15 damage.
Greenscale hunter 1's spear misses Gourmert.
Blackscale cruher's greatclub hits Torinn for 18 damage and pushes him 1 square. Torinn is bloodied.

Spitting out the taste of blood in his mouth, Torinn draws inspiration from Michael's words to confront his foe. He stands up and draws his weapon, holding it in both hands as he faces down his attacker.

["So a declaration of peace is rejected with a declaration of war. I'll revise my statement, then: You should surrender while you can, because we won't hold back."]

Bright light lances from the tip of his blade in an arc and gouges the lizardfolk raider in the shoulder. Torrin's blade traces the arc in the air perfectly, inflicting a deep cut that burns with righteous indignation.

The dragonborn grasps his weapon, stands, and delivers powerful smite to the nearby raider, leaving it flummoxed by holy energy.

Another greenscale, this one adorned in a ceremonial-looking headdress and lots of prayer beads, wielding a spear, and speaking a strange dialect of draconic, "Grack, don't be afraid, my children! Take them, and we'll have a glorious sacrifice for the king!"

Bernkastel: (Nature) The bog mystic is a controller, and likely the leader of this party (though not actually king of the whole group of lizardfolk). It possesses a potent aura that emanates 5 squares, and whenever an enemy in the aura is hit by an attack, they treat the aura as difficult terrain until the end of its next turn. It can also wield its spear in melee, and possesses a potent poison cloud which dazes foes in an area burst 2, and once per encounter can transform an area burst 2 into boglike marsh (immobilizing foes trapped within). When wounded, it can lash out with its tail, slowing an enemy it hits.

Torinn's valiant strike hits greenscale raider 2 for 10 damage, plus 6 radiant damage from holy smite, which causes it to be dazeduntil the end of Torinn's next turn.

Myn attempts to divine the weakness of a nearby lizardfolk, but sadly finds it vulnerable to nothing in particular. It is still blasted with psychic energy though, and blood sprays from its wounds as it recoils, clutching its face.

Gourmert slips away from the raider quietly, then tears across the battlefield, looking for cover. A hunter takes advantage of the distraction to slip through the swampy terrain and corner the pseudo-shaman, stabbing her with its spear and cutting off escape simultaneously. The bloodied raider attempts to punish the nearby ranger, but the half-orc's quick counterattack leads to a spectacular miss. In response, the lizardfolk lashes out with its tail in a lightning-fast motion, sweeping Sureiya off his feet and allowing the raider a quick reposition.

Myn's your delicious weakness hits the greenscale raider 1 for 14 psychic damage, which bloodies it.
Gourmert shifts away from the hunter, then moves away from the battle.
Greenscale hunter 2's spear hits Bernkastel for 13 damage, and it shifts 1 square.
Greenscale raider 1 uses club against Sureiya, and Sureiya counterstrikes with disruptive strike ( http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3024047/ ), which hits for 8 damage and causes the greenscale raider to take a -5 penalty on its attack! Club misses Sureiya, but he is still marked until the end of the raider's next turn.
Greenscale raider 1 uses tail sweep (minor action attack, must be bloodied to use it), which hits Sureiya, knocking him prone. It then shifts 1 square.

The psionic shaman's tear in reality rips both the crusher and one of the raiders from their position and unceremoniously deposits them in different locations, while the shaman and her spirit companion change their own positions. The dazed raider can only limp back towards the battle, while the unharmed hunter attempts to stab the prone half-orc. However, Sureiya manages to roll out of the way of the blow.

The hulking crusher levels a blow at the shaman, reaching past the paladin to do so, but can't get a solid hit. His effort is punished by the paladin's righteous aura, which forces the creature to stagger backwards.

Torinn finds the blackscale crusher a much bigger threat to his companions than the hunter sitting behind him. And that beast had the nerve to reach around him and attack the shaman as though he wasn't even there. He darts off to the side, wading through the marshes the creature came through, and cuts off its escape with a roaring charge, light spearing the giant creature and giving him a path to carve his attack through.

Torinn swiftly moves away from the dazed raider and charges the hulking brute with full force. Though his sword swing misses the monster, it is still seared by radiant energy.

It roars in response, and whirls around, its tail knocking the dragonborn off his feet. The tail then lashes forward and slams into the paladin's exposed form, leaving him battered and bloody.

Torinn's charge attack misses the blackscale crusher, though his holy smite still deals 6 radiant damage to it.
In retaliation to taking damage, the blackscale crusher uses tail swipe, which hits Torinn for 16 damage and knocks him prone.

Michael rallies his companions as he moves forward, drawing his sword and leveling a strike that leaves the crusher more exposed to attacks.

The bog mystic cries out, (Draconic) "The swamp take you, heathens!", then lifts his spear as he shifts to the side. Suddenly, below the clustered adventurers, a rush of moist, entangling plants erupt from the ground and savage them. Michael takes the full force of the blow, his feet becoming completely entangled, though Surieya and Myn manage to step aside before the worst of the plants take them, though they still have heavy vines clinging to their limbs, slowing them. The plants remain, making the entire area marsh-like and difficult to pass through.

Michael's intuitive strike hits the blackscale crusher for 4 damage, and until the start of his next turn, you gain a +4 bonus to attack rolls instead of +2 if you have combat advantage against the crusher.
Greenscale bog mystic's swamp's grasp hits Michael for 11 damage, and Michael is immobilized (save ends). The bog mystic's swamp's grasp misses Sureiya and Myn for 5 damage, and they are slowed (save ends).
Swamp's grasp creates a zone of swampy terrain until the end of the encounter. The zone is difficult terrain to creatures without swamp walk.

"Bernkastel's" quick spellcasting allows her to heal both the paladin and warlord, as well as cause her spirit companion to dissolve into a fiery sand that blasts the blackscale brute and infuses her allies' weapons with fiery energy.

The greenscale raider, now quite injured, limps off as quickly as it can, while the hunter turns its spear on the nearby half-orc in desperation, but fails to land a mark, and so it shifts away, looking for better targets. The blackscale lets loose a savage roar and swings its greatclub at the fallen paladin, but his trusty plate armor deflects the block handily. As the blackscale attempts to shift to a better position, it is struck by Torinn's radiance, and begins to bleed profusely. Upon seeing its own blood, it lets loose an even more savage roar and bites at the fallen paladin's leg, sinking its teeth into an exposed part.

Bernkastel's healing spirit allows Torinn to spend a surge and regain 16 HP. Michael also regains 6 hit points.
Bernkastel's scorching sands hits blackscale crusher for 13 fire damage, and it is vulnerable 5 fire until the end of Bernkastel's next turn. Also until the end of Bernkastel's next turn, Michael and Sureiya can have their attacks deal fire damage.
Greenscale raider 2 flees.
Greenscale hunter 1's sidestep attack allows it to shift 1 square and then use spear. It misses, then shifts away.
Blackscale crusher's greatclub misses Torinn. It then shifts 1 square up, taking 7 radiant damage from righteous radiance, which bloodies it.
Blackscale crusher's feral bite hits Torinn for 5 damage.

(Draconic)"Gack!" the bog mystic cries as the half-orc's farbond spellblade slashes through it. (Draconic)"Taste the bog!"

The greenscale mystic leaves itself open to attack from the paladin as it conjures a poisonous cloud in the midst of the adventurers. Though Michael stands strong against the vapors, Sureiya and Torinn are quite affected--their vision blurs, and they find themselves unable to act as effectively.

However, they are collected enough to notice the bog mystic breaking into a run, dashing towards the woods.

Michael uses direct the strike on Sureiya. Sureiya's ranged basic attack hits the bog mystic for 16 damage.
The greenscale bog mystic uses bog cloud, which provokes an opportunity attack from Torinn. This hits Torinn, misses Michael, and hits Sureiya. Torinn and Sureiya take 15 poison damage and are dazed until the end of the bog mystic's next turn, and Michael grants combat advantage until the end of the bog mystic's next turn.
After that, the bog mystic takes off into the forest in a full run.

Myn's curse is successful, but his eldritch blast goes wide and simply burns a bit of the swampy foliage near the hunter's feet. Goldsmith transfers to the ramp to the boat and continues to defend himself.

The hunter near the shaman takes off into the woods, running without care for defense.

Myn's eldritch blast misses the greenscale hunter 1.
Gourmert Goldsmith uses total defense.
Greenscale hunter 2 flees.

Still having problems to move, Sureiya gets near to the Raider he attacked at the start. After a short while (about ten minutes), the warlock believes he has studied the craft enough to understand enough about the programming in order to make it depart early. Once Myn restarts the craft with a bit of force, the journey resumes. Setting out at night is a little eerie, but the next day passes without incident, and the boat docks again at the usual time the following night.

A few days (four) later, however, you are presented with a new difficulty. The craft suddenly begins to noticeably slow down, in the middle of the day, as if preparing to stop. This has not happened before. The runes on the craft seem to fade slightly, and as you pull around a corner, you are treated to the sight of what appears to be the ruins of a village. It is sunny and bright today, so you can see that it appears completely deserted, but it's still plenty odd, especially given that your craft is acting strangely. The craft finally stops moving as it pulls over to the village shore, just outside what would appear to be the central part of the village, surrounded by walls. The walls are quite crumbled, and there is debris everywhere.

From the boat, there is little suspicious to see, with one exception. There are a number of large, stone buildings here, with walls that have long since crumbled and left the innards exposed. Various pieces of furniture remain as well, including some rugs, tables, and even a bed, though they obviously haven't been used in some time--they are stained and moldy. The one thing that is suspicious is a set of what appears to be glowing symbols on the ground surrounding "something" big that you can't really make out from your current position (the ruined walls block your line of sight).

The psion-shaman takes a moment to recall some of the area's history.

History: Given that you are now quite close to Many-Arrows, you can recall that there were once many more villages in this northern expanse of wilderness. However, first the spellplague was responsible for the destruction of many, and then most of the rest were abandoned or overrun by the aggressive orcs that began to thrive in this area. Many-Arrows was known to be hostile and territorial in the past, and they have cleared out most of the surrounding areas of other civilization. Mithral Hall is fairly unique in that it still stands in the shadow of Many-Arrows.

Perhaps a bit frustratingly, Torinn hasn't heard much about the area in recent times.

Sureiya's search of the area is more fruitful, however. Once he disembarks and has a look around, he finds enough evidence to believe that this village has been in this state for a very, very long time. A few decades, at the very least, possibly as long as the Spellplague. It does not seem to have simply have been abandoned, however--there aren't very many, but Sureiya found bones that didn't look like they belonged to just any animal.

Perhaps more startling is the presence of what appears to be a large, crystalline pillar jutting out of the ground, tearing apart the worked cobblestone in the midst of what must have once been the center of town. The crystalline object towers at least thirty feet high and about twenty feet around at the base (growing pointed towards the top), and glows a deep purple. A ritual circle of some sort encircles the strange object.

Myn: (Arcana) You believe the crystalline structure is actually similar to the "vein" you saw in the cavern in the Troll Hills, in that this is evidence that there could be some sort of leyline nearby. Only, this one is probably to a different plane than the Elemental Chaos. From the looks of things, there may be an intersection of this world and the Shadowfell nearby.

The ritual circle, on the other hand, seems to be designed to allow passage to and from the Shadowfell (or whatever plane is intersecting nearby) when active. It may only work for a certain kind of creature, however. What may be most concerning is the fact that this ritual circle is probably newer than everything else here, as making such a circle permanent or long-lasting would be an extremely arduous and expensive task.
