When mingling with the crew, Torinn finds they are pleasant enough, if a bit gruff and difficult to wrangle much information from. Still, Gourmert is happy to tell him tales of his adventures, when he's not busy stuffing his face with food from his satchel.

It is nearly sundown when the calm sea air is broken by an unnatural-sounding clattering from the base of the ship. This is followed by the sounds of something scuttling very quickly along the sides of the ship, which prompts yelling from the captain, "Adventurers! Brace yourselves, I think we've got an infestation!"

Myn is the first to spot it: three giant lobster-like beasts scuttling up the side of the ship, moving with an unnatural quickness. Each of them is covered by a carapace which is a deep purple which fades to red as it ends its segments, and they move on two sets of legs and use a pair of claws to grasp and pull themselves up the side of the ship. Between these legs and the claws are three sets of smaller, pincer-like appendages. Of the three, two are a bit larger than the last, with one over-sized claw which they favor slightly. The third has smaller claws, but a vicious-looking stinger on its tail.

Michael and Torinn spot four more of the creatures quickly thereafter: two more of the smaller ones, one larger one, and one that is different than the ones Myn saw--it's as big as the crushers, but it doesn't have an oversized claw, and its carapace segments reflect the evening light in strange color patterns.

The smell of rotten seafood is in the air as the battle is joined.

Okay, so, you all can take ONE ACTION to prepare yourselves (standard or move or minor), I suggest you equip your weapons, shields, or implements, as the case may be. Go ahead and roll initiative in the post as well.

Nature check for information on the Crauds.

Michael's hefty blow and words of encouragement slash the craud cleanly through, splitting it in half, and restore Torinn's vitality. The paladin looks ready to fight once more.

One of the remaining impalers attempts to claw at Sureiya twice, but the ranger swiftly dodges the blows. The craud scuttles across the deck even as it misses. The king reels back and slams its claw into the ranger, catching him just as he dodges the impaler's blow, and scores a solid hit. The half-orc looks as though he has barely begun to fight, however, and the last impaler takes this as a sign to attack the warlord instead. One of its claws is parried by the warlord's shield, but it slashes through with the second. The brilliance of the light shining off the king's reflective carapace nearly lures Myn to its grasp, but the warlord's shouts help keep him in the right of mind.

Things are looking up, though the psionic shaman is still bleeding out.

Michael uses inspiring word, which allows Torinn to spend a healing surge and regain 25 hit points.
Michael's warlord's strike hits craud crusher 3 for 26 damage, kills it.
Craud impaler 3 uses claw frenzy, but its claw misses Sureiya twice. It uses scuttle to shift 4 squares.
Craud king's claw hits Sureiya for 14 damage. Sureiya gains 5 temporary HP from his racial trait.
Craud king's angler's lure misses Myn.
Craud impaler 2 uses claw frenzy, and its claw misses Michael once, and hits Michael once for 5 damage.
Bernkastel takes ongoing 5 damage.

The shaman's spirit companion vanishes, infusing her nearby allies with fiery energy, and granting "Bernkastel" a fiery boon as well. A blast of scorching sand also hits the craud king, leaving it vulnerable to further flame attacks.

Gourmert steps away from the fray and cowers, saying, "J-just tell me when it be over!"

Bernkastel's scorching sands deals 6 fire damage to the craud king, and it becomes vulnerable 5 fire. Myn, Bernkastel, Sureiya, and Torinn can choose to deal fire damage with their attacks until the end of Bernkastel's next turn.
Gourmert moves back and uses total defense.

The half-orc readies his blades for the king, then slashes with a fiery enchantment, searing the king once and missing once. This draws the king's blood, which reacts with its shiny exterior in a strange way--a strange light reflects off the surface, which must serve as some sort of signal to the other crauds, for both of them immediately lash out with their claws at the nearest adversary. Sureiya manages to dodge the attack, but Michael is now badly wounded after the impaler just barely pierces his chainmail.

I'm gonna go ahead and assume Sureiya chooses to deal fire damage with these attacks.
Sureiya's twin strike hits the craud king once for 20 fire damage, which bloodies it.
When the craud king becomes bloodied, it triggers for the king! Each craud within 5 squares can shift 4 squares, ending this movement closer to the king, and make a basic attack as a free action.
Craud impaler 2 hits Michael with claw for 7 damage (it would have missed, if not for the craud king's blood in the water aura with grants allies a +2 bonus to attack rolls against bloodied enemies).
Craud impaler 3 misses Sureiya with claw.

At the warlord's command, Sureiya slashes his bastard sword through the nearby impaler. Both impalers begin to flee for their lives, the one near the ranger moving carefully at first before scuttling down the deck at top speed.

Michael uses direct the strike. Sureiya's melee basic attack hits the craud impaler 3 for 10 damage.
Both of the impalers begin to retreat. The impaler 3 shifts 1 square then starts scuttling down the deck as quickly as possible, while the impaler 2 just runs away at top speed.

Craud Impaler 3 (I): (T-5, Elevation -2) -19 HP

Notes
Getting pushed over the edge is bad for you, not so bad for the crauds. Though it will deal falling damage either way.
Moving up an elevation without using the stairs requires a DC 15 Athletics check. Moving down an elevation without using the stairs requires a DC 5 Athletics check.

To Sureiya, the shaman replies, "they're not attacking, so it should be okay, right?"

She does neglect to mention that the crauds would go on to victimize another ship.

The efforts to stop the bleeding are in vain; it's proving difficult to see the warlock's wound at all, concealed by the effects of shadow walk and the surrounding sinister, spiraling shadow aura of darkness.

Tentatively stopping initiative, though you still may want to try and do something about Myn's bleeding wound.

He wanders over and attempts to help them close the warlock's wound.

With Myn's bleeding stopped, it appears the battle is over.

Feel free to take a short rest at this point. However, keep in mind I may not grant an extended rest for a while, even if days pass. This is a conscious decision on my part to separate game mechanics and time passing to allow for more challenging adventuring days.

The captain nods at you, and bows in thanks, saying, "Thank goodness for ya adventurers, no tellin' what would've happened had ya not been around."

Gourmert pokes one of the dead crauds with his spork-like instrument, then nods, satisfied that it's dead. "Ugh, smells awful. Ah wonder if these things be good eatin'? Can't imagine so, wit' tha smell."

The adventurers take a breather to restore their strength after the warlock's wound clots (seriously, magically stop bleeding, who's ever heard of such a thing). The captain calls a few deckhands from below deck to help dump the craud bodies overboard, and Gourmert seems turned off enough by the smell of the beasts to not object.

The day passes, and you are all treated to a rather pleasant, if spartan meal with the sailors, which includes some spiced bread, crab, and a hearty chowder. The merchants are apparently dining elsewhere. The sailors work out a rotation with you for the night sailing, so that some of you will stay on deck while the others rest.

The night passes without incident as well, and then another, until about five days total pass, and in the mid-morning of the fifth day you find yourself approaching a bustling seaside city. This must be Waterdeep.

You all gain the benefit of a short rest. If you want to post anything you've done in the meantime during the journey, I'll give a brief pause to do so.

As the boat get near to the city, the orc spend some time thinking about how quickly things have changed; He is on a quest with some adventurers he barely know and they need to avoid a war between two empires. That's a lot of stress for an inexperienced ranger as him, and even worse, he is traveling with people he doesn't feel uncomfortable with, that's a whole new feeling for him.

At some point after the fight, Torinn realizes something was odd about that battle. Where did his old abilities and powers go? Where did these new ones he instinctively knew about come from? Were his prayers somehow answered?

...Speaking of new abilities replacing the old, Torinn walks over to where Bernkastel was resting and inquired,
"I'd never seen you fend off enemies with those abilities before. When did you come by such powers??"

The Warlord wasn't expecting to reach Waterdeep so fast, but that fighting the other day must have ruined his sense of time or something. The meal that the sailors treated them to was a lot better than the stuff that the inn had, even if it was seafood, something he didn't normally liked. He gives his regards to them if him and the party are to depart from the ship soon.
